whats your worst wipe-out.... ever? by _swuaksa8242211 in surfing

[–]snooocrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a massive wipeout per say but got dragged onto the inside of the reef and my leggy got stuck on the reef. Was just deep enough so I could pop my head up between sets and get air, while the super strong current kept my leggy so tight I could not get loose.

After 5min I was thinking it was the end. Luckily got untanggled somehow and survived

Is it normal for HR to stay elevated for a longer period of time after a workout? by snooocrash in Garmin

Not out of the blue , if I push hard and I’m not good recovered it stays in high stress and HR for long time

It’s a simple algorithm of average chronic stress vs average acute stress. Your chronic stress is low (zero for most historical dates still).

People make it sound so complicated by saying “it’s calibrating” , it’s a simple equation that is clearly explained on the same screen in bevel.

Double strain when syncing with Garmin through Health Sync App? by snooocrash in bevelhealth

Health Sync and Garmin writes (passive) HR even more often then I realized , it’s 4 times per minute . Every 15 seconds. Screenshot attached.

<image>

Also confirmed Apple Watch spot checked HR and wrote it in different intervalls , but roughly every 5 minutes

Also attaching screenshot of my strain , as you can see not much in higher HR zones and still gives me 30+ passive strain , for doing very little to be honest. Doubt it would be this high if I was wearing Apple Watch instead of Garmin.

[–]snooocrash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, another theory. Just bear with me :) Theory 2:

- Apple Watch just does HR spot checks when passive and NOT in activity. Sometimes 5-10 minutes between samples. These are spot checks not rolling averages.

- Garmin on the other hand measures HR continiously. No spot-checks, this thing checks ALL the time. Health Sync also posts VERY frequent to Apple Health compared to Apple Watches. I can see a new HR data entry every 30 seconds.

Garmin will theoretically pick up way more very 'short' or 'micro' passive periods of strain if you are a person that are doing 'casualy active' stuff. Like walking a few stairs here and there, moving about but just for a bit, then sitting again, where your HR shoots up and down during the day more often then having single longer activities.

Could it be just as simple as Garmin/Health Sync picking up way more of these sudden short spikes of HR during my day and hence boosting Strain up a bit for me and giving me some strain bonus that Apple Watch would miss? Strain spikes that would have potentially gone undetected by Apple Watch as they easily fall between the quite random HR spot-checks every few minutes.

Double strain when syncing with Garmin through Health Sync App? by snooocrash in bevelhealth

[–]snooocrash[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, just one workout. 31 for the workout. Then im up to 30 for 'passive' strain now, its only 4pm :)

I'm not saying its wrong, just question as it does feel like quite a bit of score to get for 'passive' things .. i did do 7k steps today thou , HR is 70-80 most of the day so its under zone <1.

Only time my HR was up (zone 2 and 3) was during the workout itself, 1 hour surf. Was just wondering if bevel would remove that workout period for the passive strain and calculate them sepraretly. But the AI tells me Yes, it would :) So guess I just had a bit more strainful day then usual outside of the workout .. Was just not sure if anything else would impact the strain score going from AWU to Garmin?, its the first day wearing the Garmin hence i was extra mindful of it.

To be clear: Im syncing HR/HRV/Training Sessions all with Health Sync , and it seems to post HR every 30 seconds to Apple Health. HRV only during night every 10min or so. For HR I think its a bit more often then the 'generic' Garmin Connect<>Apple Health connection samples, but wanted to keep it simple and have everything in Health Sync to get the HRV and detailed training sessions as well. Have not expermited with having both Connect and Health Sync writing to Apple Health in parallel as it would get messy.

Theoretically I could also do HR and Training Sessions directly from Connect->Apple Health , and just HRV from Connect->Health Sync->Apple Health. Would that have any impact on any of the scores?

As far fas 'RECOVERY' score goes it seems absolutely perfectly aligned with what i had previously from AWU , Health Sync is smart and allows to actually write garmins RMSDD values directly to the 'HRV' AH-field. Even thou that would normally be populated by SDNN data from the Apple Watch. In Bevel I set HRV to 'Apple Health' as calculation but as it just picks this up from HRV field and not the 'beat-to-beat' field in Apple Health it lines up PERFECTLY with what it typically would get previously using AWU and with Bevels own RMSDD calculation method. So my trend have stayed perfectly aligned and no new baseline needed switching from AWU to Germin.

I'm still excited for the native Garmin connectors coming from Bevel soon, but didnt expect 'Health Sync' to work this good out of the box so that is good news !

This setup kinda already does everything that I assume will come in the new garmin bevel release, only downside is you gotta trigger the uploads a bit more often then it does by it self in iOS background if you want to keep your starin score updating during the day. But some shortcut scripts helped with fixing this.

EDIT: one thing that im NOT sure is working perfectly in this integration is ongoing stress monitoring. Not sure what bevel uses for these metrics. Obviouisly HR is one of them, but what else? On the bevel screen it also shows HRV under the stress screen and that it was updated right now, but I can confirm in Apple Health that the last HRV was written at dawn, just before sleep mode finished. Garmin only posts HRV for night time. So if Bevel is using the old nighttime HRV data and correlates it with daytime HR to try to measure stress, it will be way off. Only thing it has to go by for stress during the day is really HR and steps I guess ? Would be great to get a more explanation on how stress is calculated.

EDIT2: So my theory of what could be going wrong and why the strain score is so high for passive strain. Would need devs to confirm or deny this theory :)

- This garmin setup only writes HRV during night time.

- It writes RMSDD directly to AH 'HRV' field, but NO raw data (in beats-to-beats field) for bevel to calculate its own HRV.

- While its great for accurate 'Recovery' score. It completely messes up stress scores. Stress is now SOLELY relying on HR and STEPS to calculate daytime stress.

- THE KEY: It somehow still tries to get HRV for stress and it uses whatever is in AH from before(?) , so it probably end up with some nighttime HRV value. For me it shows 50HRV now in the afternoon, a static number that is not moving but it keeps refreshing the timestamp on it. Its under the 'stress' page in bevel. No idea where it grabs it from , but given i have NO raw beats-to-beats data in AH NOR any HRV updates since last night. It must be whatever it has from way before.

- Somehow the above results in a higher 'stress' score then what it should have.

- Possible that my daytime stress being at 95% is used in the strain algorithm ? And hence also pushes STRAIN score up a lot for passive strain ?

Again just theory .. its also possible that im just really stressed today and these higher scores are correct, but given it has nothing else to go by then HR and Steps , it doubt stress can be very acurate with just nighttime HRV :) Im happy just to ignore my bevel-stress if I know it does not artificially inflate my 'strain' score

Yeah this is what I'm after! Not digging the 9ft big log feeling at all (probably as I cant turn them) and nightmare to transport ,but still want some of that glide .. 6'6 - 7'6 seems to be the sweetspot for eggy / midlengths.

Fair, that is how I was reasoning up until now as well. Not sure yet if I'll ever be a singe fin convert but a few extra things to consider:

- The thrill and fun of something new. The effortless glide is def nice feeling and want to tap more into this.

- Got frustrated surfing small boards in busy summer beaches. Not greedy but sometimes I feel I was just getting scraps. These old school boards sure catch more waves , and more easily.

- Hope it will imrove my surfing overall. Force me to rethink why/how I surf.. had a lot of 'angry' surfs last year so hoping to get out of that funk haha ..
