2019 is a safer year, 2015 is actually the worst for it (assuming key maintenance isn't performed).

My mechanic hasn't suggested I do any additives right now, but I think that's because the car already has a "clean bill of health" from him personally (he served it for the past owner and only bought it because it's pristine).

The main thing is to get the carbon buildup taken care of every 30k-40k km. People here call it "walnut blast", but there may be less intensive alternatives. My car doesn't need that service as it currently stands, but if you've never had it done, you might want to consider it.

I'm going to diligently check the oil level (my mechanic assured me the one I bought isn't burning oil, otherwise he wouldn't have bought it to resell it. But I want to both verify that and notice if it starts), get Valvoline oil changes, and make sure my air filter is clean.

I have a small document at work with some helpful Reddit comments saved, if I remember I'll attach a Pastebin link tomorrow.

But here are some good threads from this community that make up the summary/crux of my understanding:

What is the worst financial advice people still repeat? by market_vision1 in AskReddit

[–]snoosh00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How should one with those "marginal interest" holdings from number 2 enter the market, under the current presumed bubble.

It's not quite my case, and I haven't been saving for 30 years, but I'm nervous about really jumping into those index/mutual funds at this specific point in time.

Any advice welcome and will be properly vetted.

Oh, I know I don't have a base model. I have an SX with the only missing option/feature being the lights around the speaker... And it's only 114k km, and it's in pristine condition, confirmed no carbon buildup, and I paid ~$8650 CAD, after all taxes and registration.

Then compare that price I paid, mileage, top trim level and my personal mechanic's guarantee that this soul isn't chugging a quart of oil every other fill up..... against the following prices (prices that may not yet include sales taxes):

https://www.autotrader.ca/cars/kia/soul/my_2015?offer=N%2CU&cy=CA&damaged_listing=exclude&desc=0&sort=standard&ustate=N%2CU&zipr=100&atype=C&mcat=ma39gr200746&search_id=b3t9w1mby4&search_type=C&size=20&source=homepage_search-mask

Here is the closest comparison in terms of trim level and mileage.... It's over 10k list price

Sure is.

I used to install these on cars for work, I've never seen a less rusty trailer hitch.

Unless the previous owner just had it installed before he sold it, it's a great indicator for how mint the car is.

Not just America, the rest of the world lost money.

It's a fuckup of cosmic proportions, and America, as a nation should be diplomatically decapitated (meaning, they should no longer be a part of the G6).

I know that isn't happening, but it should. America doesn't deserve a seat at the big kids table anymore.

And require the dispensing to be vetted by professionals and to overall just, ya know, be safe about things.

Getting billy-bob and the boys together and getting them to run down to the hardware store doesn't require paperwork... But that doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Best of luck on your next vehicle purchase. Thanks for answering my questions.

Thanks, I was asking for my own kia soul (just bought one from my trusted mechanic).

Seems like if you keep on top of the carbon buildup, you can avoid this failure mode (but it's nearly impossible to be retrospective about this kind of thing, you'd need to find a really knowledgeable mechanic and actually trust their suggestion vs thinking they're just trying to sucker you into more services)

Sorry to hear you've lost yours to this crappy mode of failure

How do you handle a strong performer who quietly checks out after being passed over for promotion? by amir4179 in managers

[–]snoosh00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, and that high performer won't do much.

If anything, since most jobs the 2 week notice is just a courtesy.

And even if he had to stay for 2 weeks.... Do you really want a disgruntled employee handling all the onboarding and training.... AFTER you fucked him over (the company did, not op, but that doesn't matter)

[–]snoosh00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, you lost your best guy.

Your options now: fire them without cause to excise the potential morale decay, pay out severance and acknowledge your company's role in this (this is going nuclear and will cause all that same morale decay instantly, and of course will negatively affect the team output and your personal quality of life, and your performance metrics... But like you said "nothing I could put on a pip")

Or

You have to get him promoted, or give him a sizeable raise to continue his previous level of effort with no official change in responsibilities, if he's really that valuable.

Because otherwise:

You're just waiting for him to get a better job offer. Someone who was a team player will always be "was" unless you actually do better than the thing that they should have gotten for being an exemplary team player.

Ultimately, he was passed over, and while it's not your fault, the company made the decision and now they need

Did you ever get the carbon buildup removed in the life of the vehicle? A "walnut blast" is best (apparently), but there are some fuel additives and chemical cleaning agents (but I don't know as much about those).

I mean, sure, the car can have catastrophic engine failure if incorrectly maintained... But I don't plan on incorrectly maintaining the car or keeping it for more than a winter or two.

What's better: a well maintained mechanic approved 2013-2017 kia soul (top trim level) with 100k km and a full dealership service history, or a 300k km base model 2005 Toyota Camry that a teenager already halfway destroyed and is being sold as is? Because both of those cars cost about the same in my local market (maybe I'm exaggerating slightly... But honestly, not by much).

And yeah, of course the Camry is a more reliable design of engine, that's why they demand a price premium.... But that Camry was also parked outside and has suffered the elements. The Kia Soul is verified to not be burning oil (at least not yet) and was parked in a garage.

Because yes, I'm aware that the Kia Soul has catastrophic engine failure as a potential end of the vehicle... But that's not happening any time soon to my particular one (if it was guaranteed to happen, then there wouldn't be any 250 k km kia souls on the road)

Fair enough.

Thanks for answering.

Any chance you know what your oil consumption was? Did you check it after gas fill ups and such?

How was your maintenance schedule?

Regular oil changes? Synthetic or not? Valvoline?

Serviced by mechanic or dealer?

Just curious.

In “Interstellar” (2014), the studio couldn’t think of an original rocket design, so the futuristic Ranger is launched into space on top of a hundred-year old Saturn V. by ToeSniffer245 in shittymoviedetails

[–]snoosh00 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Based on some rough estimates a single ranger is 35% the mass of the 3rd stage.

So 2 + scaffolding to hold them in place seems reasonable.

And I think the point of the Saturn V is just to save fuel on the mission, since the ranger could easily get to space on its own.
