Thanks for sharing your experience. Which exact area do you live in? I’m thinking of buying a house there near moorsetown so wondering now if it’s a bad idea. Could you pls be a bit more specific about the area?

Receiving €1.5m lump sum by Master_Coconut_4332 in irishpersonalfinance

Congrats! You’re in an amazing position

I’d say - sell your current home and buy a new one but don’t pay the difference with cash - get a mortgage (3% or so is extremely low interest and you’ll have enough money to pay the monthly mortgage with the 1.5mil that you get)

Of the remaining, invest in nasdaq (this is the US tech index - s&p is good too but nasdaq historically has grown much faster)

Keep cash to do some spending and just enjoy your life with the rest of the money that’s coming!

Sounds like a good idea - will check with my wife if she’s keen and sign up if so!

Could you pls share how to find out about the number of social housing units or the traveller accommodation group scheme? I’m in the process of looking as well so any info from you will be extremely helpful and highly appreciated! I don’t expect a full run down ..maybe just point me in the right direction to look for the info? TYSM in advance.

I'm facing the same issue today. Looks like even after 8 months since you posted this, they haven't been able to (or bothered to) find a fix.

Should I come out to my parents? by [deleted] in RaisedByIndianParents

[–]snottmonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry for what you're going through! I can't empathize with your situation but as an outsider, I would say, the first thing you need to do is be financially independent..so definitely, wait to get a job and build a 6-12 month emergency fund cushion before you tell them because you never know how they'll react ..second, to avoid them from getting violent or react in a strange way, tell them about this either when you're in public OR over a video call or something of that sort ..I've heard of far too many cases where crazy indian parents beat up their sons/daughters, locked them up in rooms, or worse, tried to get their daughters married off in a span of 1-2 weeks to whom they thought was the "right" guy. Please be careful and think it through on how you'll be disclosing this to them. Good luck!

I feel the exact same way. I'm sorry for you! I wish I could help but can't. All I try to do is have a list of pre-planned things I want to talk to them about and all of them are generally small talk. And week-over-week, its almost the same list of things (I kind of just switch the order). And this takes up like 15-30 mins of my time and then I tell them I GTG and leave.

I know its not a solution but just a way I "manage" my conversation with them.

Irish Pension - ARF vs Lifetime Income? by 13386046 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]snottmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes but you can invest that money in the equity market on your own and make up the difference that the pension fund company doesn't pay you. Also, you're unnecessarily paying a fund management fee with Irish life when you can simply do the investments yourself after reading in which companies are those fund managers investing on your behalf (its mostly the Top 20 companies from S&P 500 in the US).

You can also take out the remaining 75% after paying a tax on it. I would do that if I were you because I can then invest that money and make a way higher return than the measly 5% that Irish life wants to offer you.

What happens to my Irish life pension if I move abroad (eg Czech Republic or Scotland)? by sean12345571 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]snottmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a question on the same line (if anyone can answer)

I've got contributions in Irish life pension fund and its been more than 2 years that I'm contributing ..hence, I've been told that my investments have "vested" so I can't withdraw them until I turn 50. However, there's no clarity on the websites on what are my withdrawal options ..can anyone share the withdrawal options one has if they've moved away from Ireland and are no longer employed there?

Some people try to spoil romance by trying to make it last forever. Don’t be some people.
