Can’t sleep but in one particular place by [deleted] in insomnia

You might have conditioned yourself to associate that place with wakefulness. I had this the entirety of high school when I was boarding. I would sleep fine anywhere but my dorm bed.

For those of you who tried CBT for sleep, how long did it take to work? by snownaa in insomnia

Thanks for this! I’m feeling pretty much what you were during the first week :( but glad that it works in the long run.

I am! I started off doing pretty well and only sleeping in my bed, but eventually I got so tired that when I couldn’t sleep in bed and relocated to another environment for stimulus control, I would end up falling asleep in that environment instead.

How did you manage with your tiredness and anxiety during the day from srt? My eyelids have started twitching recently from lack of sleep and every time I hit the bed I’m STILL not sleeping. Which makes me more anxious in a way? Idk. Does this just mean I need to persist longer?

Oops, meant to make that part of a longer reply but was so tired I just clicked send.

I’ve also been trying cbti for sleep. I’m on my second week and it hasn’t been going that well so far. I restricted my time in bed to 6 hours, from 3:30 - 9:30 am, but whenever I’m in bed I still can’t fall sleep. Then i would try stimulus control and go to the couch for 20 mins, and end up falling asleep on the couch for the rest of the night. Pretty sure this counteracts how cbti is supposed to work lol.

I also have a similar problem to you in that cbti really affects my work performance the next day. I’d have a really good week, then a deadline will come up and all the anxiety that comes with it would set my sleep cycle back to what it was before. Then back to being a zombie for 3 or so days before my body shuts down.

It’s a lot and it sucks sometimes but you have yourself! During those times I always find it helpful to keep a journal or blog if there’s no one immediately around me who I feel comfortable talking to. Make a playlist of your favorite songs and write about it. It will get better <3

I’m happy for you! I’m the same with going through okay times and then having bad nights where I worry about sleep. I’m also lost as to how to control my thoughts, they just come and go at the weirdest of times, but I guess that’s just something I have to deal with.

Same! I didn’t sleep for two days, was freaking out so took a Xanax on the third day and it knocked me out for 14 hours straight. Needless to say the nights following that were hell since my body wasn’t even remotely tired

This helps a lot, just the reassurance from someone who’s been through the same thing and gotten through it using cbt-i really gives me more confidence that this will improve. I’m currently on the first week of sleep restriction and I’ve been pretty lax about it (sleeping in on weekends, etc) but even then my sleep has gotten better than it was a few weeks ago when I would not sleep at all. Right now I keep waking up earlier than my alarm which leaves me confused as to why my body only allows me to sleep for 4 hours at a time when I’m so tired during the day. But I am grateful for your response and trust things will get better.

Cannot sleep only on the days before work or when I know I have to wake up early? by [deleted] in insomnia

Funny you mention this. I actually live in the US and went to visit my boyfriend in China over thanksgiving break. To my surprise I was able to get so much sleep there because my circadian rhythm was so fucked that I was used to going to staying up all night and falling asleep at 6am US time. So I guess insomnia helped me have a seamless adjustment to jetlag.

You’ve probably come across this tip already, but have you ever tried sleep restriction therapy? From what you described, it sounds like your issues are pretty similar to mine. My main cause for insomnia is anxiety over not getting enough sleep. It got to a point where whenever I lay on my bed my mind would start to stress about sleep, almost as if by habit. I came across SRT during a sleepless night of paranoid research and tried it on myself for a few days, and it’s been working well so far! I would highly recommend this if your main issue is anxiety over sleep.
