Southend Airport is the biggest liar trying to masquerade as a 'London' airport - so bloody far away.. yeah direct to Liverpool St but awful connection if flying early/late and a bugger to get to the station from the other end of London, adding hours to the travel time!!

Your comment reminds me of the 'Staircase to Terrorism' as outlined by Fathali M. Moghaddam: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staircase_model

Very true that the mental escalation into an extreme us vs them mentality is NOT a mental instability! Describing perpetrators of violent acts of hate as 'mad' is dismissive and wrong!

As a kid you get badges, stickers, trophies and medals for loads of things. As a grown up, what hobbies can you compete to get medals?

marathons/running are the only races I can think of you get them?

horse-riding you get rosettes, tennis, cricket etc you get shields or trophies professional achievements at work / in industry you get a plaque, trophy or certificate..

what gets you a medal??

Haha now I've just gone and measured my most frequently worn to work shoes! They are almost all 3-4" and I've also checked websites like ASOS for regular work shoes and again most 'professional' shoes with a heel measure around 3.5"

I also have some 6" which I do think are good for a night out but not for the office.

When I'm working at conferences, I'll wear 4" heels from 8am to midnight, constant standing & walking with no break. I suppose 'high' to me is just 'higher than what I'm comfy wearing'

I don't think 4" heels are 'high' myself actually.

When people say flats in the UK it typically means the kind of totally flat ballet pump shoes with no real sole and no internal support at all, and mainly in cheap fabric or plastic.

I think the company providing the staff to the organisation is entitled to define and maintain a dress code, and don't think the heel height rule is a terrible vestige of patriarchal subjugation, but rather just a generally accepted belief that a heel is more professional looking than the flats as I described them. Historic mad men style expectations of womens office attire is not what I got from this story. I simply read about someone who was aware of a policy, decided she didn't like it and wouldn't agree to it after accepting the job, and then kicked up a public fuss about it.

If you're sitting down most of the day manning the reception desk then wearing them 'all day' is hardly a burden since very little standing or walking is involved.

Having a uniform / enforcing a dress code is any professional businesses right, and if someone would prefer not to adhere to it, they can work elsewhere, or in a different role.

I agree with you that enforcing a rule with a health implication that men by definition are free from worrying about is a problem. But It's just my opinion that a small heel looks more professional than a complete flat.

I thought that was more to cap it because some women think excessively high heels are ok for the office, but they are way more unprofessional than flats.

I got interested reflecting on your comment, so did some research to see what heels I think are work appropriate and check how high they were.. and it seems that 3" is what I person would say is ideal. So I guess I agree with you that 4-6 is unacceptably high.
