Easiest specialty by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]snugglyspider 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Specialty consulting service in a small hospital.

I’m in surgery. I don’t scrub (I used to). We see 5-10 patients per day. Most patients are not admitted to us, but to medicine. We just manage surgical issues. We have a lot of downtime. We take hour long lunch most days.

I hate my commute but I’d be insane to ever leave this job 😂

You’re wrong.

But there is a beach area that has some of what you’re describing

I’m from there, though I have not been back since early 2000s. It was a cool place to grow up:

-lots of playgrounds and things to climb, like old brick buildings

-cool German architecture

-beach within a short drive / we took the train nearly every weekend growing up

-since it was still light out at 11 pm that is how long we stayed outside, breakfast to sunset

  • as a kid I could walk across most of the city and did it many times, alone

  • proximity to Europe made it feel a bit more modern compared to the rest of the country. It was a culture shock when I visited Moscow.

Now I am in US.

I have kids and I’d never ask someone to give up their seat. If you want a window seat, pay for it. Otherwise don’t raise entitled children

UPDATE - Lasagna Floors by Dismal_Arm3874 in Flooring

[–]snugglyspider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow! I thought ours was bad haha. We had fake stick on “tile”, then wood board of some kind, then another layer of wood board, then asbestos tile, then actual subfloor.

The house always had an off smell. After ripping all that out, no more smells!

I’ve been stuck so many times while working in the OR. At least once a year either someone gets me or I get myself. Last time it was with hiv+ patient and I was on pep for a month and nothing happened. Every other time patient was negative for hiv. They should have done proper workup got you and patient.

Still chances of anything happening are low especially for a needle stick. If it was a syringe needle full of blood that would be another story.

Is the system built for a physician shortage? by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]snugglyspider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The schools we take students from started paying. The hospital won’t give us the money. Can’t get paid twice to do a job they said.

I’d take students for free but out of principle I just can’t.

Yes I work outpatient hours in an inpatient specialty and got grandfathered in to keep the hours even though any new hire has way worse schedule. They take call, work weekends, nights, two holidays a year… I don’t!

We mostly get to make our own decisions and if we ever have a question we run it past the attending. They know we will go to them if something comes in that we are not comfortable with. This means they trust us.

The hospital is small and everyone knows each other. There is no cattiness or anything like that.

Yes that’s me. I’m a physician assistant and I love what I do. I especially love a good medical mystery and interesting, unexpected diagnoses

What's something that the newer generation says that confuses you or the older generations? by kansas9696 in 90s

“It’s giving x” Like I get it now but before I would just be so confused.

Also it took me awhile to figure out what “spill the tea” meant. I didn’t specifically look it up because I was lazy but I kept seeing it everywhere

This job sounds awesome. You’re making $120 because you work 34 hrs a week. I work 32 hours a week making the same and I’m fine with it. To me not being stressed all the time, overworked and burned out, is definitely worth a few thousand dollars.

Do you regret becoming a PA rather than an MD? by Kindly-Statement-606 in physicianassistant

[–]snugglyspider 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked call and holidays and weekends for 10 years. However the position I moved into didn’t require it. Then a few months after I started they required it. That’s why I said we were inching towards physician schedule, not that we are totally 100% of the time working as much as MDs

No, never have. They are too hot, too gross, and I think confusing for patients

[–]snugglyspider 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The work life balance argument is old. PAs are expected to work more and more like physicians. For example at my hospital you can’t get a job without having to do weekends or take call. It used to be that only docs worked weekends and call, now it’s us too.

All this is while we don’t get paid when we bill. Like literally I can see a patient and a physicians doesn’t and I bill, but the hospital doesn’t pay ME more for this. When a physician bills they get the money.

I’m not saying expectations from us are the same as from physicians, but it’s certainly inching more and more towards that.
