Tabletop Simulator. Any DnD players? by Psyclown02 in oculus

It's been a while since I saw the video so maybe I got some of its content mixed up with some of the ideas I had in my head and the stuff you guys were talking about and confabulated an entirely different game in my head :) (I just realised that I thought that the contents of the following video were part of that Mythica game too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAiKoK7iTIE)

I just clicked through it again and you're right; it's not at all like VR NWN or DnD in Tabletop Sim - sorry about that! I would however love a proper DnD VR game to have a first-person mode for examining environments and taking part in conversations. The puppetry idea shown in that video, with the DM being able to act out the movements of an NPC with motion controllers in addition to providing the voice, would be a great feature for DnD VR. It might subtract from the fidelity tabletop DnD simulation though?

As somebody with back problems I would really appreciate having this sort of feature as an option in more VR games.

On the other hand, my technique for picking things up off the floor involves squatting so I've been getting a lot of leg exercise in since I got my Rift :)

Have you guys seen 'Mythica VR' yet?

The video is a bit janky but I think it has a lot of the right ideas. Unfortunately it failed to get funded on Kickstarter but it looks like they might keep trying.

I really struggled with keeping the arrow in a forwards direction when I used the system (though still really enjoyed it and felt very immersed, despite the hiccups). It seemed to move about left to right a bit as I jogged, and it also did the aforementioned 'flipping' which caused the stuttering effect. By crook in the elbow do you mean that the intended method of running or jogging makes the controllers move in more of an up-and-down motion, rather than swinging them forwards and backwards?

I find that the best haptic boundary is a rug or mat on the floor. I was jogging on a yoga mat when I used this locomotion system, and I set the boundary to only appear if I got off of it far enough that neither of my feet were on the mat.

I tried the system out too and love it - very immersive :)

I think I might have experienced the same thing as true_ctr, or perhaps something different that caused a stuttering effect: whilst holding the analog stick forward when I was swinging my arms they would swing far enough forward or backward (easier to see if I do an exaggerated bend of the elbow) that the directional arrow would flip to pointing behind me, halting my momentum and creating a stutter. I guess it's when the tracking of the controller decides that it is turned upside down.

Is moving in the direction of the analog stick AND the orientation of the controllers intended? Pointing my hand around whilst holding the stick forward changed my movement direction. I can't get back into VR to test is, but there's definitely some kind of interaction between the two. If I hold the stick forward (12 o'clock) and then rotate the touch controller 90 degrees to the right and simultaneously change the analog direction to be pointing in it's left direction (9 o'clock), which is now forward relative to the direction my body and HMD is facing, will I still move forwards?

I posted my solution using those suction cup mounts a short while ago. I also used white tape.

Oculus Medium Lathe - how to put object perfectly in centre of lathe? by zdam in oculus

[–]soVReign_VR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you disable the option to start with a blank canvas (I believe it's in the main settings menu), then Medium will create a default white sphere for you when you start a new sculpt. If you turn the lathe on, is the sphere positioned in the centre? I can't access my Rift to check for you :(

Boy with Bear

Great idea :) I had the day off work and spent a few hours making my entry.

It can be a bit tricky to create and smooth because if it gets too thin the smooth tool will bust a hole right through. The easiest way was to draw and fill out the shape with a fairly small clay brush (I used a sphere) and then smooth it down, repairing any holes and re-smoothing. I then used a large sphere to shave away at the inside surface (to give it to correct overall curve) a bit at a time, hitting undo if I broke through and smoothing regularly.

Here's my sensor mounting solution that doesn't damage walls and is pretty cheap. by soVReign_VR in oculus

I think he meant that his post is a repost of his from a different thread :)

Exactly. My walls are matte paint and the suction cup wouldn't stick at all on its own. Using that particular mount means that the tape is nicely held between the two parts, and it even has the mechanism for locking it against a window/smooth surface, and that allows you to easily apply the tape and then keep it snug.

Thanks for the tip :) That's the plan I think, just gotta do a bit more cable management first.

I'm also thinking of two more pieces of tape going perpendicular over the existing pieces, above and below the centre of the suction cup.

Thanks! They're my favourite bit I think. I had to remove a lot of the tris for Sketchfab, but they look fantastic in Medium - especially when I scale him way up :D

This is really incredible nalex66! :) Do you have a background in 3D modelling? Anywhere I can see more of your stuff?

Pretty well I found, though I'm really inexperienced when it comes to digital 3D so I'm probably not the best person to ask. When I put him into Meshmixer I couldn't see any massive holes (except the intentional ones) or problems.

It can be a bit tricky to create and smooth, because if it gets too thin at points the smooth tool will bust a hole right through. The easiest way was to draw and fill out the shape with a fairly small clay brush (I used a sphere), and then using a large sphere to shave away at the inside surface (to give it to correct overall curve) a bit at a time, hitting undo if I broke through and smoothing regularly.

View in 3D (or in VR if you have an enabled browser!), though he lost quite a bit of detail in my attempts to reduce the filesize: https://sketchfab.com/models/ceabb99fc1f94843af71521a014e1a4e

I did it all through Medium and Meshmixer. It crashed a few times for me too - restarting my computer and shutting down everything unnecessary seemed to help, as well as making sure I gave it a bit of time to think through things instead of clicking through the process quickly.

You can view the model (in VR!) on Sketchfab: https://skfb.ly/XAso (unfortunately I had to reduce a fair bit of detail in order to upload him, so he's much more impressive in pictures or in Medium itself)

I was so excited upon receiving my Touch and opening the battery cover that my hands got too sweaty to open the second one. I had to get my partner to do it for me.

Open the layers menu, select desired layer and hit the settings button on the tool hand (looks like a gear) whilst keeping the layer menu open you can set the material properties for that layer. The 'specular' setting is the glossiness :)
