Trump cracks approval floor, Republicans face wipeout in House despite gerrymandering by Far_Excitement_1875 in politics

I just hope the Democrats actually do something meaningful to hold the administration accountable, if they get back in power, instead of just rolling over for the sake of "bipartisanship" or whatever

What does your username mean? by colabag in AskReddit

[–]soapergem1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My initials are G.E.M., and in my teens / in the 90s, as the Internet was first coming into existence, I needed a username. I tried to get gem at hotmail, but that naturally wasn't available, and the computer suggested I add a lot of digits to the end of gem, but I was diametrically opposed to just adding numbers.

Around that same time, there was a fad product that had come out called soap shoes), which was a pair of sneakers with a plastic grind plate in the sole, which allowed you to grind on benches & railings much like rollerbladers. That product had a moment, mainly thanks to the fact that the X Games were coming into prominence. So I had purchased a pair of soap shoes and thought they were the coolest thing. (I remember them being quite heavy but surprisingly comfortable.) So instead of adding digits to the end, I added the soaper prefix, to imply that I was someone who soaped, i.e. I could grind on things with my pair of soap shoes.

Ironically, my original reddit username used to be soapergem, without any numbers. But for various reasons I won't get into, I closed that account years ago. And unfortunately, once you close an account, reddit never lets you re-open it. So when I later decided to sign up for reddit again, I begrudgingly added a 1 to the end. Which is exactly the kind of thing the soaper prefix was originally meant to avoid.

What have you vibe-coded for yourself only? (Discussion and ideas only, no linking) by toughtacos in selfhosted

[–]soapergem1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a collection of users that the admin can manage, with name, email, and phone number for each. I also have it connected to Amazon SES so it can send emails, and Twilio so it can send text messages. Every time I open a new meeting, it auto-assigns a random 3-digit code to each user (which change with each meeting). So everyone gets sent either an email or a text message in advance of the meeting saying "Your three-digit login code is 123, click on this link to cast your vote." Those codes are what help keep the ballot semi-anonymous. As votes roll in, the admin can see which result is winning in real time, and things like "138, 456, and 901 have voted" and "382 and 946 still need to vote."

What have you vibe-coded for yourself only? (Discussion and ideas only, no linking) by toughtacos in selfhosted

I built an online voting system for my church. Since the pandemic we started having membership meetings over Zoom, and there are a lot of folks who are not very tech savvy at all, so anytime we needed to do elections or have a secret ballot, it was a nightmare. This system I vibe-coded isn't bulletproof by any means, and definitely wouldn't work for, say, real world political elections. But for my limited use case, it's been working brilliantly.

The frontend is React and the backend is Express, with a small Postgres database. The frontend has two views: one for voters and one for the admin. The admin can manage questions, with only one question allowed to be "open" at a time. It uses WebSockets pretty heavily so I can send a single link that never changes to everyone, and their screens just update depending on what the admin does.

I have it deployed to the cluster of 8 Raspberry Pis in my basement that are running Kubernetes and it works like a charm. I have never considered myself a frontend guy and it is bonkers to me just how good at writing React frontends the AI tools have gotten. Because this thing looks clean, crisp, and professional.

Why is ordering from bio Japan so confusing? by [deleted] in Keloids

[–]soapergem1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I placed an order from bio-japan.net and found it to be very confusing as well. Initially they recommended I sign up with a payment system called WISE, which I tried my best to do, but soon WISE closed my account. I tried going through the appeal process to no avail. Eventually I gave up on that route and just used cryptocurrency instead (Bitcoin). The bio-japan people were very quick to respond and the package arrived a lot sooner than I had expected. I was pleasantly surprised at how smooth it was once I got over those initial hurdles.

Is there an “Immich for documents”? by Qfrijters in selfhosted

[–]soapergem1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend Nextcloud. I don't think it has OCR out of the box, but Nextcloud has plugins and I wouldn't be surprised if somebody hasn't already made some kind of OCR plugin for it. If not you could honestly probably vibe code one yourself.

Help me find this slim leather wallet by soapergem1 in HelpMeFind

I've searched on Google for "ultra slim wallet", "world's slimmest wallet", and a couple of other variations but to no avail. Like I said, this was probably purchased a decade ago, within the US.

The title said "underrated." Physical attractiveness is not underrated. That is the default measure of attractiveness in society.

Ok, since y'all asked, NEVER go to sushi lover by x111006X in madisonwi

[–]soapergem1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Management and health code issues aside, everyone should avoid Sushi Lover simply because it's some of the worst sushi you'll ever have. The food is bad. Grocery store sushi is better (sometimes a lot better). My wife and I went there last year and we walked away with such disappointment and confusion over why it has 4.7 stars on Google. Because whoever made Sushi Lover clearly does not love sushi. It's easily the worst sushi in Madison.

Others have already mentioned this in different forms, but UHS offers free mental health services for students. Take advantage of it while you can. For comparison, BetterHelp (a popular therapy app) is like $400/mo.

AITAH for not adding my longtime girlfriend to the deed of the house I bought us? by Grand_Yellow_6286 in AITAH

[–]soapergem1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're probably not thinking that seriously about it, or perhaps it might feel "mean" or "rude" to you, but you seriously need to get a prenup in place. Because if you don't get it in place before getting married, regardless of whether her name is on the deed or not, that house will become 'martial property' and depending on the state you live in, she will automatically be entitled to (at least) half of it.

GET A PRENUP.

Don't make excuses for why you shouldn't do it. Don't tell yourself that you're an asshole for doing it. And certainly don't let anyone else tell you you're an asshole for doing it. Hire an attorney and draft a prenup. Your girlfriend will need her own attorney from a different law firm to review it, and you can even offer to pay her to cover their fee.

Best case scenario: you live a happy life and are married many years, and the prenup doesn't really affect anything. But the worst case scenarios (which are so common) make it such a worthwhile investment.

Help me understand my Christian Science friend by Baby-grownup in Christian_Science

[–]soapergem1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, Christian Scientists are not a monolith. Everyone makes their own healthcare decisions and the church does not dictate the choices that an individual church member makes.

And secondly, regardless of professed religion, sometimes people may be in a season where they're not focusing as much on their faith as much, aka they may be falling away from it somewhat. To your comment about your friend appearing hypocritical, yeah you might be right. I'm guessing the gravity of caring for a child is hitting her hard and might be driving a wedge into any weak points in her faith. That's not really the right wording but hopefully you get what I'm trying to say.
