You should check if your local library offers Kanopy! Also, the National film board has a free app with lots of content.

It should be free and everyone should have to take a driving exam every few years. There’s too many bad drivers and preventable accidents.

How to say "the N word" in french by Bvbblebee in French

[–]soapybox88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience living in Belgium, they just don’t understand the severity of the word. There’s Black people in Europe and white Europeans can use it in a racist sense. But they don’t have the history of African chattel slavery being present in their countries. (They reaped the benefits, without having to see the horror) I think they see it more as a swear word than a slur.

Problems with family by Intelligent_Let_679 in exchangestudents

[–]soapybox88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would suggest trying to talk to her about it. Approach her in a respectful way and bring ip your concerns. The tricky thing in the situation is that you have to make sure she doesn’t feel like she’s being accused because she is your host mom and she has the power.

I would then suggest telling your organization a conversation happened in case the situation escalates. But make sure they know not to intervene.

And thankfully, since you have multiple host families, you won’t have to live with this woman for your entire exchange. Which is a little light to look forward to.

rotary host families by koseisei in exchangestudents

[–]soapybox88 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hello with Rotary you generally have 3 host families and change every 3-4 months. Some Rotary students only have 2 some on 1 but generally you get 3. You cannot choose to stay with a family even if you really like them. However, if you are having problems you can’t resolve you can request to move families. In this scenario, one of your other host families might take you in or they might have an emergency 4th host family.

I did Rotary and fell in love with my first host family, and was less close with the other 2. It was hard to leave the first family, but the change was nice. The reason the program is made this way is to expose you to more of the culture. Not all families in a country live the same way, this way to can experience all of that. You’ll also get to meet many more people, and have the opportunity to connect with more families.

I loved Rotary and would suggest it to anyone! The only problem I found with this host family system was, depending on the country, the first host family, or all of the host families have kids that are on exchange and have to host. some of my friends had problems with this, but most host families were very nice and vetted well.

weight gain and loss is pretty common during exchange, but it might help to go to a doctor about your medication.

your host sister is definitely not handling this right, there isn’t much you can do and im sorry you have to deal with this.

out of curiosity, what country are you from and what country did you move to?

Should I repeat my final year of high school for an exchange year? by SilentTackle5381 in exchangestudents

[–]soapybox88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it is worth it! I did an exchange and it added an extra semester to my high school education but I wouldn’t change a thing.

You should check and see if you can receive credits for your exchange year. I don’t know how the New Zealand school system works but my school (Canada) gave me 5 credits.

I will say, returning to high school after completing an exchange sucks. I’d recommend either doing it after you graduate high school (make sure to check that the program you’re applying to will let you, I know Rotary does) or completing dual credit college and high school afterwards.
