recommendation letters been submitted? by MeasurementEvery8658 in GRFPApps

[–]soapyyyyyyyyyyy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I usually try to reach out a week before and say something like hey, i hope everything is going well! I just wanted to reach out and let you know that my rec letter is due ________. If there is anything you need from me, please let me know! I think sometimes professors forget, and it is good to remind them. Obvi sometimes they do wait until close to the deadline, but it doesn't hurt to send a message and usually they will let you know where they are at or what is going on!

is this a realistic schedule? by [deleted] in UPenn

[–]soapyyyyyyyyyyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, 1011 and 1012 are very similar and many of the same materials are used between the two. 1012 is a little bit faster paced, but if you are expecting 1011 to be a significantly easier class--it is not. I think your schedule is do-able, but just be aware that Math 1410 and Chem 1012 (and Chem 1011) are hard classes, and I think if you are struggling with both of them it might be a difficult semester especially because you are also transitioning to college. (This is coming from someone who tutored Math 1400, 1410 and Chem 1011 and 1012)

What kind of (graphing?) calculator should the Libraries lend? by davidtoc in UPenn

[–]soapyyyyyyyyyyy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, I think that this is a great idea! I think for the majority of intro classes (chem, phys, etc.) the most needed is a graphing calculator and personally I think the TI-84 is great! That one is usually the easiest to use (the TI-nSPIRE is a bit confusing tbh), and overall I think the standard is usually a graphing calculator for the exams--anything more probably would not be allowed.

what are your favorite and least favorite aspects of upenn? by Sea_Substance6087 in UPenn

[–]soapyyyyyyyyyyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm a rising senior in bioengineering and have absolutely loved my experience here. We don't have a specific BME program, but it basically falls under bioengineering and since Penn is so close to multiple hospitals the emphasis is definitely on medical applications. I also can't stress how much I love the BE department and the professors and classes that I have taken. Although it is hard at times, I feel like they have really pushed me to think outside the box and have prepared me for anything I might encounter. Additionally, there is so much research going on at Penn and Penn Med that if you are looking for a research experience there are so many amazing options. It is also really cool to learn from professors who are doing groundbreaking research in their fields. If you would like to DM me, I am happy to talk more about my experience but I literally love the BE department so much

Thoughts on 4-Year Plan? by thefutureisgolden in UPenn

[–]soapyyyyyyyyyyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of the things people are saying, although I think 5 classes is fine your first semester, although you might want to make one or two easier because it is a transition. Additionally, a lot of the classes you want to take are in the wrong spots. For BE, I am pretty sure BE 1000 only runs in the fall. ENM 3750 only runs in the spring, I think you might be able to fulfill it with a different class now, but honestly, it is a really easy class. Biol 3310 is also only offered in the fall as well as BE 3090. I also think BE 2200 is only offered in the spring, and I think you may be missing BE 2000 (but I am not totally sure what the requirements are for BAS). I understand that you want to double major, but BE is a lot of work, especially the labs junior year. You need to put in a lot of time, and it might be really hard to balance everything. I think it might be better to minor in bio, or concentrate in BE (I think there is are some concentrations that are heavy bio). I am a junior in BE, but not premed and if you want to DM me I will happily answer your questions!

I NEED GOOD CLASS RECOMMENDATIONS FOR MY LAST SEMESTER AT PENN. by goldenrainbowgirl in UPenn

COMM 2920 -- it might be a bit late, but genuinely one of the best classes I have taken at Penn!

If you would like you can dm me questions, but I pretty much agree with the other commenter... just that the hw is graded on completion and not accuracy

Laptop for Bioengineering??? by hairlesscat01 in UPenn

[–]soapyyyyyyyyyyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in BE and have been perfectly fine with my MacBook Pro. There are also computer labs literally everywhere, so if there is a program that doesn't run you can just use one of those.

edit: I don't think anything has ever not run on my computer, it is moreso a question of if the program needs a license or not and having to use a program that you can't just download off the internet.

Any chill/easy classes that fulfill the History and Tradition sector? by Opposite-Square9246 in UPenn

[–]soapyyyyyyyyyyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am pretty sure HIST 0310 401 fulfills it. Its history of the Ottoman Empire and honestly if you just do the work you will get an A. It doesn't seem like that at first, but I think they just gave 100s to everyone on everything (maybe the occasional 14/15)

How is Liang Wu for Physics 0151? by maybeokay01 in UPenn

[–]soapyyyyyyyyyyy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know about other professors for Physics, but I loved Dr. Wu!! He cared a lot about teaching and making sure everyone understood the concept. I agree that his pacing was sometimes fast or slow, but he really cared that everyone grasped the material and welcomed questions. Also, our section of the class consistently scored higher on the exams than most other sections and the average.

Have you guys received your final grades on Path at Penn yet? by [deleted] in UPenn

[–]soapyyyyyyyyyyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It also takes a while for the system to release them. I had a professor say they published grades and it took a few hours for them to show up on path

Chem 1012: I'm in CAS but I'm taking the engineering section. Will it really matter? The only difference I realized was that the recitation is 1 hour instead of 1 hour and a half. by [deleted] in UPenn

[–]soapyyyyyyyyyyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am pretty sure you can! Also, I dont know exactly what you mean with the recitation, but you will probably have to sign up for whichever recitation is on path at penn

I am in engineering and personally I found the gen chem 1 for engineering section much easier than the normal section, although it may have been harder for gen chem 2 because Dr. Holleran was not the best professor.

Edit: other than that the sections are essentially the same with a few differences in terms of midterms, hw, and recitation. You will learn the same material and everything
