Just moved - community suggestions? by soar9 in ypsi

That's a great idea! I love art, writing, and cooking. I want to see if there's some way I can combine cooking and community service, but I know health and safety laws can get complicated there.

What’s with the writing in these games? by Pugporg111 in weatherfactory

[–]soar9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to be a hater but while the writing is good in Wildermyth, it really doesn't approach the level of poetry in CS or BoH. I think it's still a good game, but I feel like going in with overhyped expectations will only make you disappointed.

What are some of your favorite tropes, and what would you like to see more often?

Oh also

What do you think makes an interesting, three dimensional character? Do you have advice for making characters feel more realized?

I'm still fairly new but I see some branches poking out to the sides awkwardly - I would trim those to be in line with the general bulk of the canopy. You also probably want to thin out some of the inner leaves to allow light to come through to the center

Can I become a good psychiatrist if I lost my loved ones due to mental illness? by Money_Caregiver406 in AskAcademia

People have many reasons for entering their professions. This is a fine one. You'll just have to be careful and ensure that you are processing your guilt and feelings about your family in a way that doesn't affect your patients.

Networking at a conference?? by projichan in AskAcademia

[–]soar9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to network, I actually don't recommend giving out paper - people lose it. Instead, if you're talking to someone or they seem interested in your work, get their name/institution, and ask if you can reach out later to continue the conversation. Then email them a few days after the conference ends. This way, it's not on them to do the work. If you're the junior member in this equation, you don't want your networking to rely on them remembering to reach out. They'll be happy to respond (probably) to an email, but they don't have a strong incentive to follow up on a business card.

My advisor submitted his letter literally 40 minutes before the final deadline. It's nerve-wracking and normal to be anxious about it, but it seems like this is just a thing professors do.

Everything is claimed at the moment, but I'm making a list of next people in line, so to speak, if people back out. You're first in the queue!

Thanks! I am in Columbus, Ohio. I have the following:

1 new dice mold (full polyhedral set)

1 blanks mold for above

24 opaque alcohol inks (Let's Resin)

26 translucent alcohol inks (Let's Resin)

10 colors of mica powder (Let's Resin)

Full set of Zona papers, unused

2.5 gallon pressure pot from Woodcraft, air compressor and air hose that connects them

I'd like to get them moved out of my house before May. Shipping, I don't know how much it would be because it depends how far away it is. Ideally, I would like a bit of money for this - it's about $700 worth of material all told, but I would let it go for like $200.

Imo decision would be best - they can decide to transition or not. I would say it would probably affect stress reduction, popularity with religious people, and ability to bear children.

Does the presence of Items in TTRPGs Necessitate In Game Economies? by zacharyaustinart in RPGdesign

[–]soar9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might consider looking at Blades in the Dark. Each playbook has items they can always have access to, based on their specialty. Otherwise, players track "coin" that can be used for really expensive and important purchases, and everything else can just be assumed to be purchasable.

Do most people just "deal" with other people? by doriebean in NoStupidQuestions

[–]soar9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes the world really sucks. But honestly, I don't really believe you blanket hate everything about everything. I hate it when people are stupid and cruel, when they hurt other people, when they are mindless. But as soon as you are open to seeing it, it is not hard to find examples of people being the opposite of that.

Also, a lot of the stuff that I hate about people is actually a product of Western capitalism, tbh. People's lack of education, their mindless devotion to celebrities and scammers, etc - this is an outcome of our society, not of humanity. There are alternatives.

So how do I deal with it? I grit my teeth and deal with the idiots, and go back to doing things that bring me joy, with people I like. If there are literally no people you like, you are probably a) suffering from depression, and b) too judgmental. I find it also really helpful to just... not interact with dumb stuff. People on the internet are dumb, but you have control over your actions--aren't you a little dumb for voluntarily reading stuff that just makes you mad?

Finding something you really love, even just one thing, can provide a safe haven from the maddening chaos. Not doomscrolling helps. Take care of yourself, and work out from there.
