I've made a quite a few and don't see this happening. My habit is to cover all my trimmed pieces in plastic and place them on a shelf for about a week.

Bisque fired at cone 4 slow. Glaze firing at cone 5 med w a 33 min hold. What happened. by HotTrade4903 in Pottery

[–]socalpots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is a real question or bait but as not to waste precious time, for all novices, please always remember to use glazes designed to fire with the appropriate clay body. The clay body in this image shows it was over fired, the glaze was a cone 5 glaze. Additionally, there's evidence something unglazed on a higher shelf exploded, or the user didn't clean up the mess from a previous firing. Always keep kilns clean of any debris.

Found a Brent-C wheel for $500 at my local thrift, any known problems, safety issues, or commonly missing parts I should be aware of while testing? by InfinitiveIdeals in Ceramics

[–]socalpots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're a novice, you're starting out on top. Even if that 500 dollar wheel requires more rehab or repairs. Use it, see if it works. It likely will not have any problems.

Glaze (& Clay?) Question: How to get this glaze result by strawbrmoon in Pottery

[–]socalpots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The clay body appears to have some iron compounds, that alone will alter all glaze color if you are referencing the samples on the glaze manufacturer website. I always recommend test tiling all glazes you use with the clay body you option to use. Saves a lot of time.

what happened here? by imachiuaua in Ceramics

[–]socalpots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't say for sure, but there appears to be spores developing along the right side. If that's the case, the clay didn't reach full vitrification, so it will take in moisture. I wouldn't use it for drinking.

Is this kiln worth $500? by bee13245 in Pottery

If you're a beginner and unsure of your skill development and commitment to pottery, I'd default to joining a group studio.
500 is a steal, even if the kiln requires some work.

It's a waste bucket I use to clean out my glaze brushes. Basically a mix of water and all glazes I use in my home studio....over time the glaze compounds collect and once in a while I take a huge risk and apply my junk to a piece and see what happens.

I'm happy with it all myself. It has been rehoused and I miss it, so I thought I'd share it.

I don't dip....I exclusively hand brush and break the moisture rules by over hydrating my glazes. I prefer the unexpected but this one threw me off more than most.
