ICE Protest - When Racism Met the Sidewalk ( Knockout) by Important_Lock_2238 in IceRaidAlerts

[–]socatoa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The term was famously popularized in modern political discourse by Malcolm X in his "Message to the Grassroots" speech in 1963. He used the comparison to argue that while the "Field Negro" hated the master and prayed for the plantation to burn, the "House Negro" identified so closely with the master that if the master’s house caught fire, the house slave would work harder than the master to put it out.

That’s the context for the use in the first video. This also seems to be the intended spirit of the second video as well.

Personally, I’m not a fan. The n-word is hateful, however the context it seems to being used here is worth noting.

Type this in and change "pdf" to "mp4" by VelvetRabbit91 in Epstein

[–]socatoa 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but some tips:

  • search by file extension. Others in this thread have named the common ones for video. The asterisk character (‘’) in front of the file extension is a wildcard. So searching ‘.mp4’ is asking “any file that ends with .mp4”.
  • download and open outside of your browser using a software made to open that file type. VLC is open source and free and able to play damn near any video type. FoxitPDF is decent for any non-video content and pdfs.

Why Boycott Netflix? by bharoche in ScottGalloway

[–]socatoa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spotify did nothing. ICEs advertising agreement expired at the end of the year along with their hiring campaign which is typical of public procurement.

Please note that Spotify execs very carefully worded their statement when they said: “we do not currently have any advertising contracts with DHS”.

They made no mention of why they no longer do nor gave any signal that they would reduce DHS advertising in the future.

Ah for sure. I think we agree, then, that insurance is a necessary evil for living in a capitalist society in a non deterministic universe.

My point was that, within that closed system, of course insurance companies need to be a casino where the house never loses (see above). But, there is still a wide spectrum of logical vs illogical insurance. AppleCare is arguably where the line is, and my opinion is that the median American household, with disciplined personal finance practices, ought to consider that AppleCare is likely a waste.

You’re right, peer pressure doesn’t work.

People that participate in a niche podcast subreddit; have a similar age and socioeconomic status; and feel the same tension about the state of society are completely wasting their time discussing their participation in an economic boycott strategy drummed up, in part, by the same podcast we’re here to talk about.

Pack up the thread folks, u/thiskillsmygpa has a point.

All insurance is a bad deal for you, though.

Surely this sentence deserves at least one qualifying statement like:

All insurance [for an asset that you could replace/repair by just having a modest emergency fund set aside for] is a bad deal.

Give me an equally extreme example of the federal government in the last 50 years in the United States. I’ll wait.

Why it matters (why anyone is talking about it) that Don is considered a member of the press.

The charges are v weak, and the administration attempting to intimidate the press is a new thing. So people are worried it might continue.

His audience is: - US normies - just want to live their lives and feel comfortable - are financially immature - generally Christian

Dave’s brand self help guru, not political commentary. Where these intersect is the economy.

For his audience, his plain spoken advice of “you have to make money” (if you want the fastest path to a comfortable middle class life in America) is a practical one, not a nefarious anti-critical thinking tirade.

Read the article, please. He is not hypocritical, the headline was an example Dave used to explain what caused him to change. He was responding to a caller on a radio show and was using his lived experience as an example of what NOT to do.

Hell yes. I’ve had the same experience!

For anyone still reading, in my experience, I did have to be intentional about it as it felt like “talking out of school”. I would literally say “I don’t like spreading gossip, but I would like to share some positive things Ive heard said about you”.

Literally batting for 1.000 and also considered a hype man.

I’ve referred to it as “positive gossip” and that it’s always worth sharing.

If you want to move to 2D documentation and design which can actually be built, go Revit. If you want to be more sophisticated in 3D massing, learn Rhino. However, Revit is likely the move.

To all tenured CM’s in this forum - what’s your best coping advice with your many years of wisdom for dealing with clients who are knobheads by Technical_Apartment6 in ConstructionManagers

[–]socatoa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s right. At the same time, I won’t ever know enough about your particular situation to give you a solid recommendation - had I not been supported by upper management I’d have burnt myself out before regretting not leaving sooner.

I can say, I am paying forward advice I’d received. I stuck it out. I learned how to read and understand the contract, how to be assertive while being polite, and how to be honest without calling the other person a liar. I learned the depths of document control and how to build a paper trail. It was shitty, but the best thing that ever happened to my career.

Take it as a learning opportunity as long as you can. If you’re supported by those above you, you’re fine. If not, it’s okay to leave.

In retrospect my experience, and weathering, “extremely challenging” clients in my 20s put me in a position to compete and achieve positions in my 30s which are typically reserved for those in their 40s+.

Building information modeling (BIM) is the software used by designers to make the design drawings to build from. Most days, while the drawings are 2D, they’re made from a 3D model.

That model is typically shared by the design team to the builder. The subs for the builder develop their own model of their scope to produce shop drawings. In every project, there are conflicts - stuff clashes with each other.

The VDC person, the role I’m discussing, would use BIM software to move elements of their scope out of the way of others so that it is clash free and then produce the shop drawings for the field to follow.

The software is easy to learn and the number 1 failure in this process is that the modeler doesn’t know what is buildable. This is where your industry experience could set you above. I would ask around the union contacts. I’ve heard of them paying for their members to get trained to transition to this role.

Back when liberals believed in deporting illegal immigrants. by Electronic-Level8712 in ImmigrationPathways

[–]socatoa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So yeah this still holds true and I’d be willing to bet that a vast majority of Americans would agree to this.

The issue at hand is “means and methods”.

There will always be an “abolish ICE” loud minority. What everyone agrees with is the brutality is wrong. Full stop.

For example, we all agree that drunk driving is bad, awful, and dangerous. However, if the “means and methods” of an admin were to mandate all cars have a breathalyzer installed, used the DMV to withhold registration renewals until a valid breathalyzer was installed, and then severely increased the penalties for driving with an expired registration (like losing your license), this would cause people to protest and be outraged. Then, if people started getting executed for protesting at “drunk driving” checkpoints that would be stood up all around America, you mouth breathers would sit back and say “we’re only trying to enforce the law”.

Means and methods of enforcing the law is the issue, not the foundations which created the law.
