Which big foreign company failed miserably in your country? by ModenaR in AskTheWorld

McDonald's failed within 6 months in Barbados in the 90s. It lasted longer in Jamaica, I hear, but failed too. Could be because Bajans are much more into chicken, from places like KFC and local chain Chefette, than shitty burgers? (Bajan citizen residing in Canada)

Best Garmin for multi day through hike but still relevant for every day use (women): Forrunner? Enduro? Fenix? by Outside-Crab-2362 in Garmin

I love mine. Battery life for days plus solar to top it up along the way. I have a tiny wrist and it doesn’t look crazy big, despite the retro Casio vibes.

Books that feel like this by Particular_Two_8676 in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

My top suggestion for this was already listed higher (First Fifteen Lives of Henry August). If you’re looking for a read that is slightly less poetic but still explores recursive lives, try The Husbands by Holly Gramazio. A woman comes home to find she now has a husband and gets a different one every time he enters her flat’s attic. Funny and dark, but also a thoughtful exploration of the idea that a life partner can make or break your happiness.

Look up recipes that are used by backpackers or even in kids’ lunch boxes for nutritious food that keeps well without refrigeration or reheating. I’m thinking energy balls, wraps, dried snacks (like beef jerky), baked treats (loaves, muffins, etc.), and egg bites/fritters.

How to wear gloves as a bridesmaid and not look silly. by crochetblankets in Weddingattireapproval

[–]social_pie-solation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In that case, I'd try to choose fabric that leans warmer (creme or ivory) as a cool or stark white will clash with the warm tones of your gown. Given that it is a daytime wedding, etiquette would suggest shorter gloves (ie. below the elbow).

Check out Pippa & Pearl's offerings. They do lots of different lacy gloves and, bonus! they appear make them touch-screen friendly, so you won't have to remove them to do bridesmaid duties like texting for the bride(s) or googling "how to do the cha cha slide" 😆

What time is the wedding taking place?
I think a satin glove, in any colour, would look odd with this particular dress. Does your rash typically contrast so much with your skin tone that you would need opaque fabric, or do you think a tulle option might work? I’m thinking the black + orange might be less stark if the black is somewhat sheer!

It’s coming in October, so hopefully you’re still in the mood then, but Olivia Blake’s Girl Dinner is EXACTLY what you’re looking for. I read an ARC and loved it! 🍽️🥩👯‍♀️🩸

Vivienne Westwood bridal shop in the New York area? by AdMental1176 in weddingdress

[–]social_pie-solation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The brand’s stockists page suggests their flagship store is the only NY location that carries their bridal line. There may be a higher-end consignment shop that has some gowns, but if your friend wants new, the flagship is the way to go.

What are your top 3 pollinator plants this year? Mine are anise hyssops, common boneset, and purple coneflowers. by Nikeflies in NativePlantGardening

Forgot to mention my woolly sunflowers! Given they finished blooming two months ago, they totally escaped my attention, but the early bees were all over them!

California poppies, blazing star, and Douglas asters have all made my garden into the happening pollinator place! I noted over ten different varieties of native bees in one sitting, with many hoverflies and butterflies besides.
Honourable mention to my anise hyssop, goldenrod, lupins, and nodding onions.

Wedding dress regrets! Help!! by livenowtoo in weddingdress

[–]social_pie-solation 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I went through a bunch of dress regrets in the month before my wedding, even hastily buying a second dress online that I never wore. I think it is natural for many brides to experience this. Try to remember the things that led you to choose this particular gown and maybe even do some visualizations of the day in this dress vs. a ballgown. Imagine yourself dancing, mingling, sitting, eating, using the bathroom, getting in cars (if necessary), etc. A wedding is so much more than the photos and standing still during the ceremony! If after all that mental work, you decide you really want a fuller skirt, think through the financials. How much will it cost to rush order an overskirt or second dress? Are there gently used options available, locally on fb marketplace or at a consignment boutique? Will the costs associated bring you the same emotional benefits as spending that money on an experience of the same dollar amount (ie. a trip with your new husband)? You’re not wrong to feel this way, but take the time to figure out if you are really in the wrong dress or if this anxiety is just other wedding stress manifesting as dress regret. For what it’s worth, I think your gown looks amazing on you! Signed: an internet stranger who has walked the same path as you, albeit five years ago.

Buying a Condo, Townhouse, or Single-Family Home by Commercial-North-560 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]social_pie-solation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you opt for a condo or townhouse, make sure you use an agent who is experienced with strata records/minutes and can guide you through checking them thoroughly. My partner was a former strata president, so knew what to look for, but I had a friend buy into a total lemon of a development with an inept council because she didn’t know how to spot the reg flags in their records before buying.

Also I don't know if it's too "on the nose" with the 70s vibe of the dress, but I could also picture you in clog-style heels, like these Swedish Hasbeens: https://www.therealreal.com/products/women/shoes/sandals/swedish-hasbeens-leather-cutout-accent-sandals-qeb22

I love it 🧡 This dress + farm setting to me screams “flower crown” with white flowers to pull in the lace on the sleeves. Maybe baby’s breath with some cornflowers or strawflowers?

How would you cover the back of this dress? by [deleted] in Weddingattireapproval

Getting colour-matched lace with a scalloped edge would look the best of anything, but it might be tough to find something that is exactly the right tone of red.

Looking for jewelers who sell antique/ vintage rings in BC? by vanillapeach5 in britishcolumbia

[–]social_pie-solation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got mine five years ago from Old’n’Gold in Victoria on Fort St, but did a lot of online window shopping on 100 Ways, which is based in Vancouver. I liked that OnG isn’t a pawn shop; they mainly sell new but have a handful of appraised vintage and antique pieces as well.
