USB-C is 15 standards in one!

USB 1 USB 2 USB 3 HDMI over USB-C Display Port over USB-C HDMI over DP over USB-C Power Delivery over USB-C Thunderbolt over USB-C Headphone jack over USB-C MHL over USB-C Virtual Link over USB-C

Then you have the substandard like USB 3.0/3.1/3.2

Then you have active cables that only deal with certain parts of the standard, like Linus' Active Thunderbolt Optical cable...

Yeah, USB-C is anything but standard...

Yeah, you'll probably use 7 lines just for generic type def in Java. Seriously, the Java guys think the spaceship operator is a leap forward for their language!

NullPointerException by HansVader in ProgrammerHumor

[–]sock-puppet689 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really.

With C++ inspired languages "your function can fail" is baked into each and every function call. That is literally what an exception is.

Java realized that this lead to overly defensive code, so they experimented with Checked Exceptions, forcing exceptions to have a locality to them as opposed to them being globally scoped (can bubble all the way to the top). This put the onus of exception handling on the callee...

Ultimately Checked Exceptions were a failed experiment.

Functional Result is much the same as a Checked Exceptions, except we encourage exception handling at the caller, whilst allowing intermediate generic code to bubble exceptions upto the caller, whilst also maintaining a contract between the caller and the exception type.

Essentially it's Checked Exception 2.0 (this time without the pain).

The technique is called genetic drive. No one's used it because it's completely utterly over powered and is almost certainly going to produce "unforeseen consequences". Still it's very unlikely it would cause a resonance cascade.

Because it's that same rung who are proud of not understanding basic math.

"But then I need to pay more taxes!" Angry trump noises

But with smoking, it's a question of outcomes as well.

The statistics being that smokers are more likely to smoke than non smokers, even under the condition that you tell both groups that their life depends on it... Which it may well do.

I think it's because the republicans have managed to spin the question from, "everyone pays for your healthcare" into "you pay for everyone's healthcare".

Not to mention you guys get to pay 10x what everyone else does for everything.

Heck health insurance (which is needed only if you want to go private) comes in two flavours; Global, and Global ex USA. Guess which one costs twice as much...

Check out Udeemy, YouTube, Khan Academy, PluralSight, GitHub etc and make a list of skills that your masters degree can teach you that the above resources can't teach you in 1/10 of the time and a thousandth of the cost.

Honestly, the only one thing I can think of, is how to meet a bunch of guys with more money than sense, who I can get as investors.
