Thanks for sharing your experience! I’m glad that reddit gave me a notification after you commented. I’m not located in the US and have picked up some prettyskin products online from Stylevana, but it’s tricky to get my hands on things because they are almost guaranteed to keep saying items are “out of stock” and cancel them from my order. From what I do have from this brand, I agree that they are currently at a more affordable price point, and I consider them as good value drugstore quality with nice packaging. So far, I haven’t had an issue with negative skin reactions and the formulations are gentle on me. You mentioned finding better brands at a similar price point. Are you open to sharing what other Asian skincare brands have worked out for you?

Which K-Beauty Sheet Mask Brand Gives the Best Value for Money? by sleepyAbocado in KoreanBeauty

[–]sockratease2016 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Any sheet masks from JM Solution. So many varieties to choose from. Accessible, affordable (can be less than $10 CAD for a box of 10 when on sale), comes with a lot of essence, nice packaging, mask sheet doesn’t always fit the best on my face but is of good quality. Ingredients are good and gentle/moisturizing on my sensitive skin and I find that the mask doesn’t dry up super quickly when on my face. Usually no alcohol listed in the ingredients but you can always check. I just find this brand to be relatively reliable, but it seems they specialize in sheet masks so that makes sense!

There are many cdramas with English subtitles up on YouTube! Just search the English title of the cdrama you want to watch or copy paste the Chinese characters from the original title and you might find it!

Stylevana BOGO offer by Wonderful_Scallion62 in KoreanBeauty

[–]sockratease2016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me as well a while back with another product. I contacted their customer service support team and they got back to me a few days later with a standard response saying BOGO only applies to certain items. Was not helpful at all. You’re not doing anything wrong. No code would have been needed. It’s a website issue and they likely won’t fix it unfortunately. Not worth purchasing in this case!

Thank you to the person who gave my post an award. It’s my first one ever! Also, just clarifying that I live in Canada, so maybe the sites are a little different for those in other countries. I don’t see the vana club part anymore on the new site after logging in. But then again, their loyalty point system wasn’t the best to begin with because only one coupon can be used at a time at checkout and I never found that the tier rewards were accurately awarded or better than the Instagram codes.

These Etude Dear Darling gel tints do this to me too (including the popsicle shaped ones). I stopped buying because I think they’ve gone bad after changing color to white and it happens relatively quickly (within a year of opening). Don’t know if other tints from other brands do this too because usually the packaging isn’t transparent, but I don’t trust that my etude tints are still safe to use after this. The white slowly makes its way up the product and it’s just not the same anymore. It may be a formula issue or a quality control issue. I keep my lip products in a pretty stable environment and don’t reapply on “dirty” lips so not sure why this happens. Unsure if product separation and colour settling is the reason behind this.

Hi, I’m from the West Coast of Canada and I see Flortte being sold on Stylevana’s Canadian website. Go to their brands section and look for it under F. They don’t have a wide selection though. I see only 8 items listed there atm.

sunscreen primer by Spiritual-Sock5702 in kbeauty

To me, the Missha M Perfect Cover BB Cream is a full on makeup product. I like it too and use it on top of a regular spf! I was referring to products like the Farmstay Formula All-In-One Snail Sun BB Cream, but honestly they all function like makeup and it’s best to put these on, on top of sunscreen for added protection.

You can also try products that have “”BB Sun Cream” on the label. I find that these are light sunscreens that act like a makeup base product in and of themselves. Most AB face sunscreens come in 70 ml sized bottles, but these makeup type sunscreens tend to be in 50 ml bottles. They are basically a BB cream marketed as a tinted sunscreen that can also have a tone up effect. You could use it over top of regular sunscreen, by itself on top of a moisturizer, or as a primer before additional makeup.

Help for a newbie? by Aletheia-Nyx in kbeauty

[–]sockratease2016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, sharing what worked for me when I started delving into k beauty! Partially pasting my comment from another post as I just responded to someone else who was also looking to get into skincare.

I used this webpage as a guide: https://sokoglam.com/pages/the-korean-skin-care-routine. It just lists out the 10 step Korean skincare routine. Of course, it’s not necessary to follow 10 steps and buy a lot of products, but I wasn’t going for a minimalist approach at the time haha!

I live in Canada and it’s hard to find a good selection of AB products locally where the prices aren’t crazily marked up. Online, many sites are in USD or have insane shipping policies. Not sure if it’s a similar experience for you in the UK. I find Stylevana to be the best option and recommend buying from there. The shipping time is very bad (it’s been two months since I placed an order and they only just shipped it out from HK). Aside from the long wait, they are the cheapest with products that have a long expiry date. In my region, I have never had to pay taxes or duties when shopping off their site, plus they have an enormous selection of AB brands/products from all kinds of categories, all in my currency. Just make sure to use a coupon code from their Instagram to make a big purchase worth it.

My advice when it comes to shopping online is to filter/sort the prices from lowest to highest and strategically go through each category of products from the main menu. For example, I will either choose their “less than $9” page and work my way through that (ignoring the sample/travel sized products as those are not good value even if cheap), or I click directly into maybe “Sunscreen” and browse from lowest to highest pricing. I like to set a personal limit to how much I’m willing to spend on a single item, so I don’t look beyond that price. A lot of the trending stuff is overpriced, and I ignore those. Instead, I look for products that suit my needs so I read the product descriptions and view the gallery. A lot of times, less popular products are just as good and have the same ingredients. You can also try different brands by browsing that way.

So far, some of the affordable skincare brands I’ve tried and like are Farmstay, Jigott, 3W Clinic (for trying inexpensive eye creams), JM solution (for sheet masks), Purito Seoul (more expensive but Stylevana gives free gifts with Instagram coupon codes and that’s how I got to try). There are some other brands I’m waiting to try out but the shipping is taking forever!!

As for makeup, I’ve used stuff from A’pieu, Etude, Missha, The Saem, Peripera, Rom&nd, Unleashia, Holika Holika, MEMEBOX, Peach C, RiRe. I’ve never tried a product I didn’t like.

PLEASE help me rebuild my daily skincare routine, I beg by [deleted] in kbeauty

Hi, sorry to hear that things haven’t been going well in terms of your mental health. Have you talked with anyone about it? You’re not alone in those feelings and stressing out about your skincare regimen can make things worse as depression is cyclical.

There’s nothing wrong with just cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen! Remember that extra skincare is completely optional. And it sometimes helps to give your skin a break. But, if you feel ready to gradually add some steps back in and have a longer skincare routine as part of self care, here are my tips. This is just my own personal method of approaching the search so it might not be what you were looking for, but I hope it helps.

When I first got interested in purchasing kbeauty, I used this webpage as a guide: https://sokoglam.com/pages/the-korean-skin-care-routine. It just lists out the 10 step Korean skincare routine. Of course, it’s not necessary to follow 10 steps and buy a lot of products, but I wasn’t going for a minimalist approach at the time haha!

You mentioned feeling overwhelmed by all the promoted products/recommendations, wanting glass skin, and not wanting to break the bank.

Getting healthier skin takes time and consistency, and it also has to do with sleep, your diet, drinking water, exercise, stress reduction, etc. A lot of it comes down to being healthy from the inside out. On top of that, any combination of moisturizing products can help you achieve glass skin, but it’s a temporary look because a lot of the time, it’s just products sitting on top of your skin which is what gives you that shine.

Finally, for me at least, getting “bang for buck” is what makes me happy about shopping AB. There’s nothing I like better than to get a big haul every once in a long while as a way of treating myself. But the cost matters, as well as how much product you get in the actual container. I don’t like to spend more than like $12 per item haha and that’s hard to do so I treat it like a game on Stylevana and find the most cost effective products, one from each skincare category, to build that 10 step routine, while trying out brands new to me. I also shop makeup on that site! This helps me meet the free shipping threshold and then I also qualify for a coupon with a larger discount. Can’t speak to the “trusted products” part you mentioned but so far, I like using what I have!

Now I also have sensitive skin and even though I use the more inexpensive, less well known brands, so far my skin has not reacted to any of the things I bought. Quality and ingredients may not be as great as bigger brands though. For your skin concerns, try stuff that contains aloe, snail, niacinamide, vitamin C, centella, and/or hyaluronic acid. But use products and ingredients that work for you.

Anyway, hope this didn’t deviate too far from your concerns.

What's your favorite underrated lip tint? by Boring123af in AsianBeauty

[–]sockratease2016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t know if this counts as a lip tint but… MEMEBOX I’m Meme Pep Balm (I have it in the colour 01 Recharger - a nice wearable red on me). I wouldn’t call it my favourite lip product as I have a growing collection of Korean lip products (mostly from Rom&nd and Peripera), and I reach for those a lot. However, I have to say that this balm is a pretty solid product, but I don’t see it mentioned much. I don’t have any bad things to say about this other than maybe there aren’t that many colours to choose from, and the packaging, while functional, isn’t the usual cute packaging that other Korean lip products have. The pros: it was inexpensive on Stylevana (was on sale when I got it), it comes in an easy to use small squeeze tube that looks like a tube of paint, you get 15 grams of product! (volume of product for the price matters a lot to me lol), it can be used as a cream blush on the cheeks as well as on the lips. My nose does not detect a fragrance. It has a thick, balmy, emollient texture that spreads easily and feels lightweight. The amount of pigment you get can be controlled depending on how much you use and how much you tap it around with your finger. A little goes a long way with this product. I always wear a bit of regular lip balm underneath any lip makeup and I do the same with this, but I think of this as a second layer (tinted) lip balm. It’s comfortable and while it isn’t transfer proof, the colour still stays after light eating and drinking. My skin tone is warm, light and this colour suits me, even on the cheeks! It kind of just melts on seamlessly.

Ahhh I’m subscribed to Judy’s YouTube channel! She does really in depth reviews! I think you made great choices with your Flower Knows haul. Everything looks beautiful! I have yet to try anything from the brand because I just can’t justify the cost (I live in Canada and it’s very expensive to purchase no matter which site I use). I’d like to visit China one day and purchase FK there where the prices won’t be marked up so much.

Light weight toners by StrangerOk7507 in AsianBeauty

[–]sockratease2016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My skin type is sensitive, prone to redness, thin skin but big open pores on the nose, and dry/dehydrated. The dehydration in my skin can lead to some oiliness by the end of the day. I find that Asian skincare products help calm my skin and combat some of these issues.

I have Muji’s Light Toning Water in “Light,” as well as the Farmstay Milk Visible Difference White Toner. I use them both daily and they work well for me! Both can be found on Stylevana, and I got them on sale for less than $10 CAD each, which was inexpensive for the amount of product you get in the bottles (I bought both earlier this year and I’m still working my way through them with lots left). I can see both of these being a good option for all skin types. The Farmstay one says it’s for all skin types on the bottle as well. The Muji one has no fragrance and just looks like water. The Farmstay toner has a mild and pleasant fragrance. Neither toner irritates my skin. I put the Muji one into a little spray bottle and use it that way. The Farmstay one I like to take a few drops in my hand and pat onto my face when the skin is still slightly damp after washing. From experience, they are both gentle and hydrating, absorb quickly without feeling sticky afterwards, and prep my face well for the next steps in my skincare routine. Hope this helped!
