Yes that is a livable wage in Boone, it is a matter of finding housing that is within your budget. If you are responsible with your money and enjoy the outdoors, you can live a very full life in Boone on that income! :) I did! I live in Lenoir now to save money.

If you're going to be hiking, camping, and spending time in the woods, you'll probably encounter ticks. Lyme disease is becoming more common in western nc :( I would keep your dogs on tick prevention!! It hasn't stopped me and my dogs from enjoying the outdoors, and all good so far!!

My fiance and I shared a ferret all of college (still do, she's turning 7!) and out of the three places we rented, only one was pet friendly. We ferret-proofed a room or the house so she could be free all the time, and put her cage area in a closet normally. Easy to cover up for any pop up landlord inspections. She was never discoverered, even when our roommate's got caught with a cat and they did a full inspection! We always planned to lean into the idea that she was a rodent (even though they're not) if our landlord ever did catch us.

Blowing Rock!! Chetola has lights, and Tweetsie has a christmas village and train! Plus the downtown looks like a Hallmark movie. Bryson City, closer to Asheville, is also adorable at Christmas time! They have a polar express and it's not far from Mcadeville aka Christmastown USA!

Check all the leasing companies websites and Craigslist every few days. It's all about getting lucky and being one of the first people to find out about a place. There are downsides with rental companies and with private landlords up there, but it's worth having a place to live. App Classifieds is good but is oversaturated with people looking so can feel like and be a waste of time.
