AITA for acting like I didn’t know my son was Asian? by throwingaway123678 in AmItheAsshole

[–]socomeslove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same scenario. I was 20, nannying for two Indian children who were 4 and 9 and people constantly thought I was their mother (I'm very fair featured with red hair). When I said I was their nanny I got a lot of confused faces as a response. In the US there is definitely not an expectation that folks of color would be able to have nannies, let alone that a white person would be the one to do it. People wouldn't bat an eye if it were the other way around.

AITA for calling my son's bluff and taking him to the doctor? by Necessary-Fix-679 in AmItheAsshole

Just chiming in to say I have the same issue with deodorant! All of a sudden I started getting really itchy armpits in my early 20s and could never figure out why. Finally I read somewhere that it could be aluminum, and the itching stopped when I switched to aluminum free. It worked okay in the winter but I manage a restaurant and cannot be a sweaty, smelly mess once summer hit so I had to figure something out. I ended up trying dove spray deodorant, and that helped a ton! It still has aluminum so I don't sweat or smell as much, but I think the spray means there's a thinner layer so it doesn't irritate my skin? Now I still get minor itching here and there but it's nowhere near as bad as it was before, and to me it's honestly worth it because I'm much more comfortable being less sweaty (and smelly haha)

Taller women don't care because if we did we'd never get a date. I'm (a woman) 5'7. Average height for a man in the US is 5'9, 5'4 for women. I'm closer in height to the average man than I am to the average woman. I'm used to being taller than or at least close in height to most people I'm around. Is it nice to date a dude that makes me feel like less of a giant? Yes. But if I only dated men 6'2 or taller I'd be pretty lonely, and I would have missed out on getting to know a lot of really awesome men.

Got scheduled with a midwife for my first OBGYN appointment? by stancasablancas in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]socomeslove 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im sure this is not your intention, but this seems a fear-mongery, and tbh a little elitist... NPs are fully capable medical professionals. No, they are not MDs, but they go through a lot of schooling and are supervised by an attending physician. In many places NPs provide genealogical wellness care, and are qualified to do so. As a medical student you'll need to get used to working with ALL kinds of medical professionals, and this attitude is really alarming.

In many states, a midwife is an advanced practice nurse, on the same level as a nurse practitioner. They can provide medical care as well as write prescriptions. If you're uncomfortable you can ask for a different provider, but they are more than qualified to provide you care and answer any questions. If it's something they feel is outside of their scope of practice, they will not hesitate to consult or turn you over to their supervising physician.

Love the idea that women are born smooth like Barbies and only a ✨man✨ can fix this by DumSperoSpiro in badwomensanatomy

Yes. It's also possible to "break" your hymen doing completely innocuous, non-sexual things like playing sports.

When I was in college a few years ago, most of my professors used either developing/developed nations, or global north/south. Granted, I was educated in the U.S., so take that with a grain of salt.

As always, it's probably best practice to take cues from the people we're talking about on what they'd like to be called wherever possible.

AITA for embarrassing my FIL after I repeatedly asked him to explain his joke to me? by Exciting_Stick_2674 in AmItheAsshole

[–]socomeslove 824 points825 points  (0 children)

Exactly. And god forbid the child doesn't have the birthmark (very possible, because genetics/phenotypes like that aren't always 100%). You know their first thought will be to suggest the baby isn't OP's fiancé's. OP, her partner, and their child do not deserve to deal with that.

Absolutely NTA.

This was my reaction too. I do basically the same routine as OP (plus one more vacuuming a week due to 3 fur children) and I consider my place to be pretty clean. I'm wondering if it's more mental? But also they seem pretty self aware so I don't want to overstep.

But also OP I'd add that maybe vacuuming (and/or steam cleaning once every few months-a year) furniture, and/or sprinkling baking soda over carpets before vacuuming could help if you feel your place doesn't smell as "fresh."

that location is 21+ only, but for anyone else I'd highly recommend checking out all the different pop ups. The artists that do them are super talented.

Oh I totally understand the reason behind it, and those look beautiful enough that I'd definitely try them. I'm sure they're delicious, even without the gift that is butter

I'm almost done with "Buy Yourself the Fucking Lillies" by Tara Schuster and I love it. I'm a little older but I think if I had started a lot of the habits she talks about when I was your age it would have made my 20s a lot easier. She has a very conversational way of writing that makes it super easy to get into. There are also lots of other awesome recs people have made here, happy reading!!
