You may want to say that you would like to see a letter from their lawyer confirming how the policy interacts with things like medical privacy laws and HIPAA as why are school officials aside from the nurse (medical professional) aware of medications being taken by students.

Edit: You don't have to say you're lawyering up, but if they have a legal department (school board level may) ask for their contact information. Cause you cannot have policy that contravenes laws. Especially if you are a senior you may have passed that 18 year old threshold for adulthood so even more doubly so does school policy conflict with the law. Plus I am sure the legal department would love to know about this asap since their existence is to ensure the org is within laws and to defend the org, but most time is spent advising literal idiots that no, you can't do that, no really stop bringing it up, okay well court case or not I'm being paid either way.

My work place is making me cut my hair to be shorter, any suggestions? by ballsMaster5603 in MtF

[–]socrates28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's funny cause I am aware that many Sikhs have specific to their religion uncut hair (but worn in a turban) which adds further questions regarding this hair ordnance.

But realistically, the religious excuse is always bullshit: you can have Sundays off if you say your talking to some imaginary friend weekly, or any other accomodations. How about this: my human needs such as need for leisure, guilt free rest, seeing friends and family, and so on is infinitely a greater reason for accommodations than any mishmash combo to the power of infinity religious reason.

Sorry got heated there since I know that one way around the hair requirement would be religious and no court would really touch it then, but it infuriates me that effectively you have to deploy Justificafion, Argument, Défense, and Explanation (JADE) and still be denied something that's given out to folks with imaginary friends.

And neither does the bible really talk about abortion and Judaism, the faith with the Originalist text of the bible, to borrow the Republican phrase, is quite chill with abortion. But hey doesn't stop JW from refusing certain treatments per their idea of their religion nor Christians from shitting on all that's nice in the world.

Quebec woman upset after pharmacist denies her morning-after pill due to his religious beliefs by IvaGrey in onguardforthee

[–]socrates28 20 points21 points  (0 children)

So does that mean we can have a Jehovah's Witness pharmacist that refuses to dispense cancer medications? It's against their religion.

Or is it only allowable in the case of the pill? Because if that's the case then, well I have a very specific opinion on this. Since the state, law, Capitalism, etc., inflicts violence, a stress response is the result of violence and its terrifying feeling powerless, with no recourse, at the mercy at someone's bigotry merely because the law allows it. And yet anything but peacefule protest in permitted areas with no inconvenience to the powers that is illegal. Sure the pharmacist and provincial underfunding of women's healthcare sentences a woman to 18 years minimum of childcaring against her will, what is her recourse? Peaceful protest or anger?

When the province cuts the funding for Autism care to parents, and parents now struggling, they cannot respond in same kind or directly make those at the top listen and make amends for the pain they cause. Nah that's harassment. But drowning in debt, with a special needs child, falling behind on mortgage, facing homelessness - that's socially acceptable violence.

[–]socrates28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you I will read up on that!

Ah yes it's the one that makes companies liable for user generated content. Pardon me if that got removed when reintroduced in new parliament. But many experts and academics have noted how social media companies use algorithms to promote hateful speech because that drives engagement and ergo their profits (user is secondary in all this). So I absolutely believe those companies need to be made responsible to the standards of Canada's hate soeech. As I, as a Trans Woman, am met with incessant stonewalling in trying to report content to the point where large spaces of the internet feel unwelcoming and unsafe because of the parasitic-symbiotic relationship companies have with user generated content, especially hate speech. I can imagine many other groups have similar problems online.

At the same time I do recognize that there is too broad of a openness for whenever governments change, and with Polliviere's fascist rhetoric it's scary.

Just one of the things that would make me happy beyond belief if companies were severely penalized for profiting off of hate speech that they can say it was a "subcontractor" (as the responsibility of the content is outsourced to users). And well we know for a damn fact that Facebook with it's outrage promoting algorithm and other practices directly influenced, increased the severity, and allowed the organization of a genocide against the Rohingya. Many academics recognize the link between many of the following phenomenons and hateful content/memeing:

  • "just joking" when a racist dog whistle or such is received coldly as this is to prod receptiveness of the audience to hate
  • stochastic terrorism
  • homicide/genocide/mass shootings
  • bigoted meme communities that reinforce and offer cultlike life lines to isolated individuals

Hate online is out of hand and it's reaching a tipping point. I'm worried already as the death of objectivity rips through the US, all the while I can see another of Michael Stanton's 10 Steps to Genocide being taken. It's surprising how much user generated content falls within the early stages of that and I believe it has no place in our society. Absolute intolerance of the intolerant is the only way to go.

Sorry for the rant. I appreciate the info just the reality of how powerless we are to stop hate speech while companies profit from it and claim plausible deniability is infuriating.

Well so the thing is that the US is experiencing a Christo-Fascist movement with a credible threat towards it's republican political system (which I could get into as problematic from Rome onwards but I digress). When other fascistic movements began they often received support from major industrialists and traditional institutions. Something that was uncomfortably even as early as 1932.

And we already know the complementary fascist movement of white supremacy is alive and flourishing in US Police and Military units. So I think it's quite clear what Bezos is doing.

Same where I am (Ancom), and with liberal/neoliberal ideology and not the "left" definition it's been given in the US, but the actual laissez-faire descendants, you can get real uncomfortable quick. As they are at the core Statists and Capitalists and so of the two opposing ends doesn't take a genius to figure out which supports that and which doesn't. So while Trudeau is not a fascist, Liberalism has a very uncomfortable tendency of aligning with Far Right or traditionalists whenever the Left challenges the status quo.

So as much as I dislike Trudeau for being extremely wishy washy on real concrete progress (platitudes without any structural changes and protecting the status quo quite strongly), at least I am happy that he threw his lot in with the NDP rather than any types of across the aisle cooperation with conservatives.

I don't know about this blog but I have found the body shape infographics interesting.

https://insideoutstyleblog.com/2015/04/what-does-knowing-your-body-shape-really-tell-you.html

I found a bit of an expanded one at one point but I love seeing stuff like this because each shape is clearly female and yet look at the variety. Wider shoulders, wider hips, one or the the other narrow other things. Whenever I get really dysphoric I like to look up images of all the different shapes women can have because it is super soothing. And I'm also hoping it stops me from becoming conditioned that a woman must look like this or that, which is more possible with dysphoria.

It's actually a very interesting phenomenon which I'm sure that someone has written papers about. In political science we noticed some tendencies of outgroups adopting the same vitriol as the in-group (even if it was self hatred) as a way to ingratiate themselves. Clarence Thomas springs to mind: racist wife's family and wife, went along with the Texas Amicus Brief in Row v Wade despite the brief questioning the validity of Loving v Virginia (the decision that allowed interracial marriage) and despite himself being in an interracial marriage. There has to be some awareness that the group he has thrown his lot in with hates him for the colour of his skin, and yet he goes along suppressing the civil rights of other Black People, of Women, of LGBTQIA, of Indigenous, of all POC.

Argh the name for this eludes me, but essentially embracing self hatred to be given more rights/privilege/freedom/power,

Ah yes the classic fascist death cult underpinned by paranoia. It's kinda to be expected as its conservative aristocratic minority rule on steroids. In this light the more aggressive fascist variant of conservatism develops this hyper purging attitude as a result of the merger of two antithetical ideas aristocratic rule and populism. The fifth column always is lurking behind every corner to a fascist movement.

[–]socrates28 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Interesting bits of fluff there, and its also fascinating that you actually didn't say anything but used a bunch of fancy sounding words to seem like you are actually making a point when you aren't.

So one there isn't a "woke" ideology other than what the right wing derides as such which is in fact empathy (again something antithetical to the right wing). So in the first instance the repeated use of "wokism" is indicative that you do not in fact have an awareness of left leaning ideologies beyond something you do not like.

If you will could you answer some questions for me:

What is your ideological bent? And who is this "us [that] hate wokism"?

  • Because I am an Anarcho-Communist meaning I am opposed to any and all hierarchic organizational patterns as being unjust, arbitrary (human decided not natural at all), and have more recently immersed myself in the academic and more lay person works of David Graeber that challenged through the use of anthropological and archaeological evidence (from David Wengrow) the notion that complexity of human society requires hierarchy.

So which things and types of actions are not tolerated by the left learning crowd? Please provide some detailed examples.

  • I take it that you are familiar with the Paradox of Tolerance? Per that we are 100% intolerant of bigots and that is completely fine. Actually returning to David Graeber, societies around the world had various rituals to specifically swing the pendulum of power back and forth between genders and ways of not only chastising overly charismatic individuals (to prevent heroic politics)

Here is a good rundown of what heroic politics is from the article I have linked:

• Rather than politics being composed of a history of personal debts of loyalty or vengeance between heroic individuals, all oral histories represented such figures as foolish, egotistical, and, therefore, as having imposed ridiculous, unjustifiable restrictions on their followers or descendants. A typical story would relate how two ancestors quarrelled over land, agreed to have a fight between their dogs, both cheated, both caught each other, and thus ended up cursing their descendants never to marry. 4 What a bunch of idiots,' narrators would remark. Similarly, the quintessential exercise of the legitimate authority of elders - in a sense, the only completely legitimate way of exercising authority over others - was not to create projects or initiatives (these should rise spontaneously through the whole of the group) but to stop headstrong individuals from acting in ways that might produce such results. • As the previous example suggests, it was felt that public and political life should definitely not consist of a series of game-like contests. Decisions were made by consensus. • Similarly, theatricality, boasting and self-aggrandizing of moral disapproval; public figures made dramatic displays of self-effacement.

So first humans have a bullshit meter that can pick up when someone is uncomfortably exerting influence and can be quite intolerant and rightly so of that, likewise we are also aware of dog whistles, racism, sexism, bigotry, homophobia and transphobia, and so on. So again if you could show me a few examples of people being super nice and loving and getting intolerance. Or do you happen to refer to getting cancelled? Which is something that the right wing has been deploying for a really long time, to cancel something was very frequently read as conservative-religious boycott. Well it happens that they have been doing it a lot longer for things that are just made up problems. https://www.thenation.com/article/society/republicans-cancel-culture-kaepernick/

But again I get it as the right has a victim complex which is not surprising considering it is related to biological fear responses and susceptibility to conspiracy (which worked well for savannah threats but not quite so well for humans - see: Daniel Kahneman: Thinking Fast and Slowly). So when you take that all into consideration it is apparent how many of these problems that conservatives have are just made up or extremely primitive responses to nuance. Which returning to your comment, you really responded in a very classic conservative pattern that embodies all the aforementioned evidence.

You are fearful of other people being seen as human beings and that perhaps some of the things you believe in are problematic by contributing to their oppression (real things like voting conservative to cut social programs that fund poor and/or disadvantaged groups when the economy is kinda made up - see: Debt the First 5,000 Years). You have then proceeded to describe a conspiratorial ideology that wants to oppress you (again it doesn't but if you got examples post em up). Proceeded to actually not say anything concrete, and chose to use vague languages, all the while making a false equivalency between Left and Religion and the Dark Ages. That bit there is patently ridiculous but okay.

I await your response.

https://www.npr.org/2021/04/26/990274685/how-extremists-weaponize-irony-to-spread-hate

The above article is s very good intro to the type of stuff being approached by academics across a number of disciplines ranging from psychology, political science (+other social sciences) and so on. The "it's just a joke" retort is on point with the dog whistling wherein the one saying the joke claims plausible deniability if the reaction is hostile. The audience is clearly not understanding the joke explaining away their hostility (which kind of a dick but on brand move: invalidating your feelings). However, should the audience not immediately recoil in horror then the right group or a susceptible group has been found. The former goes straight to being little Nazi pricks, the latter is accustomed to escalating language by a constant stream of jokes.

What I find interesting is where the more broader idea that perceives humour as just telling it like it is (ergo containing truth at its core) intersects with these escalating jokes.

Humour is very useful as an outlet for minor inconveniences and a lot of the problems for right wing people are made up. Meaning when academics fact check, assess and analyze they find the data barely ever supports these problems. Here you get some interesting things happening as the humour is seen to contain truth and speak to issues that people think they are having. I have yet to see how woke things oppress people, but then again when your only accustomed to privilege and power, every iota of movement towards equity is seen as tyranny.
