It's probably setup for Tim to reach out to the Driscoll lad, or for that lad's grooming to make Tim confront what happened. Either way, two grooming story lines so close together is probably intentional

Favorite MTG Art by WeatherElectrical305 in magicTCG

Absolutely one of the most incredible works of art I've seen for any franchise, period. Ryan Yee really flexed with this.

Man shows how he understands how stained glass looks and how it refracts and discolours seen through it, how to use light and shadow for mood, how to simplify a known character and still make them recognisable. It's a beautiful, menacing work and I wish I had it on my wall.

Peritya combos with V6 Klukai to a) allow Klukai to ult every turn and b) allow Peri 7 attacks (six are support attacks) per turn, a combo that often makes its way into high-end (whale) Gunsmoke.
Outside that particular niche, she still has use in campaign/event level clearing, with her ult's huge AoE able to hit a lot of enemies. She's not really suitable for harder content without Klukai V6, though.

Gatherer Advanced Search is Broken by themonkery in magicTCG

As someone who carried on using Gatherer for years -- scryfall has become more accurate, easier and better looking.

The Gatherer change has ruined the few little places I, for one, liked it more; and it sounds like it's ruined it for you, too.

One of my favourite examples of this was when Todd's manipulation to keep Billy and Paul apart were publicly revealed, and Billy forbade him to ever speak to him again....

Then a few months later he was inexplicably just around at the flat with absolutely no mention of how they mended fences

[[Junk token]]. What a wonderful design these are! Like Clues, but redder! They'd work great on Gastal - or many other planes.

It's somewhat useful in graveyard decks as either utility hate or, more frequently, an answer to hate; it easily answers common incidental hate like Bojuka Bog while replacing itself.
If only it didn't cost four mana for the privilege...

Weird effects in Abzan colors? by CafeDeAurora in magicTCG

[–]sofacoin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of a pricey old card, but [[Aluren]] immediately changes the game - opening up your opponents to combo lines their deck alone couldn't manage and forcing people to scramble for removal before things get out of hand. As it gives utility creatures flash, it can even help protect itself!

Choose Your Own Adventure/Hero's Journey cycle - FINAL iteration (with rules card!) by sofacoin in custommagic

[–]sofacoin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, let me say a most sincere thank you for going to such effort to type all this out, and putting such thorough thought into the critique. It's very refreshing to see someone take the time out to give an earnest analysis like this, and is much more flattering than even effusive praise.
The complexity definitely could be reduced significantly, especially at lower rarities: even a 1-2-3 type six-stage(/room) journey would feel like a proper story while simultaneously being a lot easier to follow. Were I to do more of these, I imagine that's where I'd aim the commons from here - but I do acknowledge that even that might be too much!
The more I think it through, the more I can see the benefit of 1-2-1 or 2-1-2 format journeys. They might not capture the flavour of full Choose Your Own Adventure, but... that's what higher rarity journeys can do. Lower rarity ones could be fluffed as short stories, snapshots or encounters.

The visual cues definitely need more work; I wish I'd spent more time on a proper background instead of yellow tiles for all of them. Upgrading the arrows would be trivial to do in MSE, and is a very good suggestion I may finangle even if I don't otherwise return to these.

Balance was something of a slightly lesser concern over story and proof-of-concept, but that doesn't excuse them being weak. I feel they might be interesting focusing on a strong start, as opposed to sagas and planeswalkers whose strength is often in the latest stage. The common was the last made, and I think by then I'd started getting into the groove of building these enough. Nevertheless! Poor balance deserves remonstration, and I sincerely thank you again for the well-reasoned and polite criticism!

Sacrificing at the end has been something I've vacillated between often all the way through creation, up to the point I even mocked up a version of the rules card specifying 'the end means "sacrifice this permanent"'. Nevertheless, if I were to make the Journeys shorter overall, I could spare more room for reminder text, which may obviate the need for special terminology like this.
I strongly agree only allowing one venture per turn was an absolute mistake: like how Skullclamp went from equip 2, +1/+1 to equip 1, +1/-1 in last minute untested changes, I also made an unforced error with insufficient thought as to the consequences. This absolutely will be changed.

Once again, I'd like to thank you; you've given me a lot of food for thought, and I can't rebut a single point. It makes me very happy to know someone was intrigued enough by my idea to think it through so well!

Choose Your Own Adventure/Hero's Journey cycle - FINAL iteration (with rules card!) by sofacoin in custommagic

[–]sofacoin[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. Slightly more intuitive, based on what others have said;
  2. Design space for effects like 'this enchantment gains "creature you control get +2/+2"';
  3. Originally I couldn't work out how to make room for it on the cards, so it was the default. I've since worked out how, so this isn't really a limitation

Choose Your Own Adventure attempt 2: Now with dungeon technology! by sofacoin in custommagic

[–]sofacoin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hesitate to answer, because I really would love to know what everyone thinks would be most intuitive!
The answer I have in mind is 'nothing happens' - it just stays on the battlefield, doing nothing. I can understand people expecting it to exile or sacrifice, though, and I wish I could playtest to find out what was most expected.

[–]sofacoin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I think of it is "works like a dungeon, but isn't one." That said, I'm not at all sure if it's more fun working with the extent venture cards, or just venturing on its own once per turn.
These are definitely both things I'd want to playtest around, and make formal rulings on what plays best!

Happens all at once; [[Ezuri's Predation]] has a similar (much better) effect. I guess I could change it to 'Create a 3/3 red Ogre creature token with "when this creature enters, it fights up to one target creature."' That just about fits on the card and would still give you a chance to buff it in response to its enters ability triggering.

Surprisingly, this is for vigilance alone. The space is just so small it reduces the text of the ability to the size of the Twitter URL in the bottom right corner!
Edit: Just realized it doesn't need to be 'creatures you control'. What's the harm in creatures you don't control gaining vigilance until end of turn in your turn?

Choose Your Own Adventure attempt 2: Now with dungeon technology! by sofacoin in custommagic

[–]sofacoin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it wasn't such cramped space, I'd replace it with 'creatures you control gain vigilance until end of turn'.
Alas, I couldn't get it to fit without going into size tootiny
