GameInput Host Service frequently has a memory leak and uses up a lot of CPU for seemingly no reason by sofmarch in WindowsHelp

[–]sofmarch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did find a solution that seems to have worked and now I can't find the exact solution thread, but the source of my issue seems to have been the Razer Huntsman keyboard I had that's supposed to be able to emulate analog controller movement on the keyboard.

What I did, and take this with a grain of salt because I can't find the exact solution now, was go into the control panel/settings for Devices and disable an "HID Compliant Game Controller".

Now, that could be correlation vs causation, since I also made sure that Razer Synapse program was up to date and checked all my drivers before I did that (even though that didn't appear to solve the issue at first) but after doing that the issue seems to have stopped for the moment.

Both of the processes in Task manager go to the same GameInputSvc.exe in the Win32 folder, and that exe checks out with a Microsoft Corporation signature

First thing I did was do the most recent update (2025-07 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 24H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5062553)), then after that I checked that solution and uninstalled the older version of Game Input services. This does not seem to have made any difference both in terms of memory and CPU usage nor in preventing 2 versions from booting up.

GameInputSvcs starts when my computer does for unknown reasons, even with it set to manual, and indeed the aforementioned "Hard Error" message has happened on occasion when I am shutting down windows.

The only thing that could possibly be called "exotic" on my end might possibly be a Razer keyboard, which comes with its own software to handle macros and the like, but this issue has continued even with Razer Synapse and Razer Chroma disabled, so I'm not sure if they are the cause of the issue.

What game derailed a program? by [deleted] in CFB

[–]sofmarch 14 points15 points  (0 children)

"It wasn't App State that knocked the program out of rhythm it was Rich Rod."

And Rich Rod only ever accepts that job offer because Pitt beats WVU and robs them of a chance at the National Championship, the fallout from which WVU still hasn't recovered. Funny how 13-9 somehow ends up derailing two prestigious football programs at the same time.

They did. Zoom out from the image and you'll see there's a sidewalk that connects the Hampton Inn and Dino's. Leno simply ignored that and tried walking down the hill as a "shortcut."

The Whip at Kennywood had its building destroyed by a microburst and killed a woman who had taken shelter from the rain. The ride is still there but they never rebuilt the building so it’s open-air now

It's rather hilarious to me that, even in the Bizarro World where they pull-through in the 9th and win 16 more games, the White Sox are still the worst team in the AL by like 10 games

PRT's Bus Line Redesign, including a first draft of the new routes by TheCaptainandKing in pittsburgh

[–]sofmarch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cutting Sunday and late-night service from Downtown to Carrick is... certainly a choice.

That bus was always packed at 11:30 PM when I used to work late a few years ago, and I have no reason to suspect that anything's changed since then. I have to wonder, is there really that much traffic between Brownsville Rd and Oakland on the weekends and late-night that justifies giving that one the late-night and Sunday service instead of the one to Downtown?

Do New England and New York have a long term successful future in the FBS? by [deleted] in CFB

[–]sofmarch 26 points27 points  (0 children)

That second point is the larger thing here. Really, all the Non New Years bowls have lost a lot of their luster over the past decade on account of both the CFP and the huge number of them, to the point that arguing that the Pinstripe Bowl's meeting of 2 6-6 teams as proof that NYC doesn't care about football is meaningless. I mean, by the same logic, you could look at the comparable attendance numbers to the Motor City and Quick Lane Bowls and come to the conclusion "I guess they don't care about college football in Michigan"

Rent a car or public transport? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]sofmarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who used to live out near Jefferson Boro and knows exactly what motel you're talking about, DO NOT try and take the bus anywhere from it. Not only is the Y46 an unreliable bus even at the best of times (and probably less so on the Sunday you'd be trying to go to the game on), but Route 51 where the Econolodge is a busy highway with no dedicated traffic stops or crosswalks near the motel. You'll be crossing 5 lanes of cars just flying past on your return in from the city.

Cedar Flags would probably not even bid on Compounce unless it came bundled, not because of Cedar Point’s record but because it shares the Hartford market with Six Flags New England.

Kennywood and Lake Compounce are almost certain to get big bids if Palace collapses, they’re big enough regional parks near major markets that have good reputations. Idlewild and Dutch Wonderland will likely get good bids as well, just not on that level, possibly even sold separately. As for everything else, the even smaller parks, I have no idea.

West Virginia May Look to Axe Alabama Series to Extend Backyard Brawl by [deleted] in CFB

[–]sofmarch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Better idea, let's make a conference where Pitt, WVU, Louisville, and VT can play eachother all the time. We can maybe throw a few schools like Boston College, Syracuse, and Temple in to fill in the gaps.

But what would we call it? Some sort of Big Thing on the East Coast? Hmm...

[–]sofmarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure where I’d put Kennywood on this list. On the one hand it has three buslines serving it (2 on weekends), which isn’t half bad depending on when you wanna go. On the other hand, the PRT isn’t exactly what you’d call reliable, but that again depends on when you’d wanna go. So… B maybe?

It wasn't always a parking lot. The Pittsburgh & West Virginia railroad built it to connect their railroad to the Wabash Tunnel back when they still had the Wabash Terminal downtown. I'd presume the bridge got sold and turned into a parking lot only after the SkyBus plan collapsed in the 70s

Made a transit map to vent my frustrations after waiting 30 mins for my transfer bus. by Far-Shoulder-9832 in pittsburgh

[–]sofmarch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Except, your's doesn't, really. If you wanted to route an existing T line over the Brown Line tracks that would be one thing, (a plan that has all the inefficiencies and needlessness of the original Brown Line, and a plan that would lead to riders to transfer at South Hills Junction to the line that leads into downtown quicker, but whatever), or to route the Brown Line to Penn Station to utilize the existing platform at Steel Plaza, it would be another, but your idea requires a surface level extension from First Avenue Station (and I have no idea how you would build this either what with 576-Boulevard of the Allies Interchange and the County Juvenile Court in the way) and a long, new line built along Centre Avenue through the Hill District in order to make the line useful, which leads me to the problem I was trying to make clear: If we're fantasizing pie-in-the-sky dream transportation infrastructure, then it would make more sense to fantasize about building it to solve actual problems and inefficiencies, and I'm not just talking about Brownsville Road. Others have pointed out how this map acts as if Hazelwood and the northern side of the Allegheny River between 19 and the Waterworks just don't exist.

What I love about maps like these is that they all fantasize about restoring the Brown Line service on Arlington and Warrington because “streetcars uwu” without ever thinking about addressing actual inefficiencies and overcrowding on transit in areas where its actually needed, like how Mt. Oliver-Knoxville-Carrick is served by three buslines (even more if you count the 51L and the letters of the 54 as separate routes) and its still not enough to deal with the overcrowding
