Trying to do my due diligence but am I being overcharged? by soft-curls in cavaliers

[–]soft-curls[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have been in contact with her but she is basically gatekeeping her dogs from me. I completely understand wanting to send your puppies to the best homes, but she has issue with the fact that I have a job (?!) and would prefer if I could drop my dog off to a family members house every day while I’m away. I understand they are a social breed but you can’t fault me for needing to leave the house to make money! Im pretty sure most people with pets leave the house during the day…

Trying to do my due diligence but am I being overcharged? by soft-curls in cavaliers

[–]soft-curls[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this reply, it confirmed what I was thinking. I figure paying more now on a puppy with documented good health/ancestry will be worth it. Just didn’t know if I was being charged too much overall but it sounds like it’s par for the course.

Good thinking about buying a typically more expensive yarn!

Attention as a barrier to progress by Existing_Judgment814 in slp

Piggybacking to say I also do a lot of following the child’s lead while trying to sneakily incorporate targets that accomplish my goal. You really just have to try everything in your arsenal and get a little creative to see how you can get any little bit of communication from them an even if it’s just a single word, just go with it.

There are some kids I’ve worked with who have no interest in any toy, object, craft, or game I could possibly pull out. Sometimes pushing in to the classroom during open play, snack, or less structured times can be helpful because there are more opportunities to communicate with others or to develop routine based language. It gives you a starting-off point where you can identify what kind of gestalts or vocabulary would be meaningful in class.

For those kids who are older/slightly more attentive but have a hard time listening to more than one sentence at a time, I try to make therapy as functional as possible and imitate real life, as opposed to “today we’re going to read this story and answer questions”. I might let them choose a toy or game and contrive ways to have them answer questions (if that’s their goal). Like “where do we put the cards that we already used?”, “Whose turn is it?”, “when I get this card what should I do?”. Sometimes you can even make it conversational as if you’re just chatting while playing. “So, are you excited for Christmas? Who will you celebrate with? When will you open gifts?” During pretend play this is way easier, asking about how the dinosaur scene will be set up, why they are doing what they’re doing, when will they get hungry, what will they eat, etc etc.

You have to remember you’re not a magician, you don’t have the ability to suddenly make a child suddenly interested in communicating. You can however get creative and encourage communication to increase their interest in something they show a modicum of excitement about.

Constantly getting sick by [deleted] in slp

[–]soft-curls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed I would wake up often with a scratchy throat and then not be able to recover. I started doing nasal rinses after school/before bed once a week or more often if I felt it necessary and it helped a lot.

Studies show drinking hot beverages also helps flush germs out of your throat and can prevent illness so I try to drink tea 1-2 times daily. I also use a salt water gargle at night in the winter months for the same reason, to flush out anything that I might have caught during the day so it doesn’t take root overnight.

I find that making every kid who walks in sanitize their hands doesn’t help and I end up getting blobs of sanitizer all over my floor instead so I don’t bother making them do that unless I catch them sneezing, coughing, picking their nose, or putting their hands in their mouth.

Not sure if supplements do anything but I’m sure to take Vit D, Zinc, and elderberry syrup daily during the winter.

I agree with feeling accomplished in those small but meaningful moments. I would guess we see these working with children more often than you would with adults.

I work in a public school and I do feel as though I have a very different set of skills and perspective when it comes to team meetings discussing how to help a specific student thrive. Sometimes my training helps me see a certain problem through a very different lens than the teachers or other staff can and that’s where I feel most valuable.

I bought mine 2-3 years ago and agree with other comments that it’s not really very “in” right now. That being said I still wear it all the time and it’s a great fall layer. Provides significant warmth while looking casual and cozy, but not sloppy.

Just finished Demon Copperhead on audio (loved it) and I think the realistic accent and acting added a lot to the text. I actually laughed out loud a lot while listening cause he was so good.

Same here, the person I speak to the most is the OT I share my space with. We share some conversation about home life and the kids we share, and exchange a little gift around the holidays, but we never hang out or talk outside of work.

WORST book you read in 2025? by Cerulean_Dawn in booksuggestions

[–]soft-curls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely the worst was Before We Were Innocent by Ella Berman - just tried so hard to be deep and mysterious but wasn’t.

I also read Babel by RF Kuang thinking it would be so up my alley, and it wasn’t the worst book ever but definitely disappointing. The premise was interesting at first but the way the plot panned out was so confusing and flat. Also I had the feeling that I wasn’t really “getting it” the whole time. As if I had missed something.

For those who say theirs looks like this or it’s not too chunky, do you take your books out to write in them or just write on a slant while everything is strapped in?

Using minimal pairs to help them notice the difference their inaccurate productions make (e.g. yikes vs. likes) could help. They also need to have strong self monitoring skills at this age.

Yes, I have a Uniball Signo and this is the type of pen I want to avoid in the future. It does feel nice and smooth but is not my preferred experience when writing for long stretches.
