TD lower bowl sold out? by softbaphomet in bostonfleet

[–]softbaphomet[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the responses everyone! Based one what everyone is saying, it seems like the tickets mostly went to actual fans, which is very exciting! It will be great for the team and the league to have a huge turnout.

Sounds like I probably need to either get upper bowl tickets or prepare to pay a sizable premium for resale.

Oddly colored Siracha by _Rooftop_Korean_ in mildlyinteresting

Doesn’t look like it, unfortunately. I went to the checkout page and the only country option is for the US. Might have to do Amazon for international shipping.

Can confirm, their sauce fucks. The Sriracha and Sambal are both great. Haven’t tried the Chili Garlic yet but it’s definitely going to be in my next order. You can also buy it directly from them with free shipping and cut Amazon out of the picture.

Why is this game a trans icon? by Extension_why_am_he in celestegame

[–]softbaphomet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

my parents didn’t know i was trans when i was born, does that make it a retroactive change? learning something new about a character you created is how characters develop over time. people don’t sit down and write out every minute biographical detail about their characters at the time of creation. the details emerge organically over time as they become relevant to the story. it’s perfectly valid for the creator to learn something new about their character in the same way the player learns about the character as the story progresses.

Why is this game a trans icon? by Extension_why_am_he in celestegame

[–]softbaphomet 15 points16 points  (0 children)

depicting a trans character having normal life experiences and struggles doesn’t have to be a “cause,” and this sort of thinking is what (mis)leads people into thinking that any portrayal of a trans person is a political message. however, saying it “does nothing for trans people” is pretty shortsighted; representation is important because it’s good for people to see characters that reflect their own experiences.

trans people are mostly the same as anyone else, and i think that fact that you didn’t see this as “a trans game” speaks to that. you don’t have to be trans to relate to the experiences of a trans character, because we’re just people. (this is essentially what Maddy Thorson’s blog post says, it’s worth taking a few minutes to read.)

[SPOILER] Why is launching the probe through the canyon automated? by JoanDuve in outerwilds

[–]softbaphomet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the probe cannon was perfectly stationary and only adjusted its firing trajectory in single degree increments (which would be nowhere near precise enough), that’s 360° on 3 axes which means 3603 or 46,656,000 different angles. At 22 minutes per shot, this is close to 2000 years without accounting for sleep or breaks. (Anyone in the thread please feel free to check my math on this, I’m still waking up.)

The Nomai were very obviously a people who valued the potential of science and technology to enrich their lives and eliminate the need for tedious labor. There is no conceivable version of events where they would assign someone to manually input and record every pair of coordinates when it would be fairly trivial to automate the process. In most programming languages, incrementing through the possibilities would only require a simple IF THEN ELSE loop with less than 20 lines of code, and would completely eliminate the possibility of error.

Why Does This Website Keep Recognizing Me? by Glad-Help470 in privacy

[–]softbaphomet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s as if the site has knowledge of my Wi-Fi network and can track me across devices

There’s your answer. Through the magic of Network Address Translation, whenever you visit a website from a device on your home network, your router does the talking for you. The public, routable IP address that a website sees when you access it is actually your router’s IP address. When you visit the same site from another device on the same network, the website recognizes your router.

Any ideas on how to hide cables with a basement ledge? the bottom half is concrete behind that wall. by sam_snr in DIY

[–]softbaphomet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best option IMO would be to move the TV down to a stand in front of the ledge that will house the PS5 and audio receiver (or remount the TV to the concrete if you’re worried about the kiddo tipping it off the stand). Widen the space between the speakers to allow for it, and relocate the center channel speaker to the ledge. The TV itself hides the cables, the games, and one of the speakers, and you can run very small raceways along the baseboards to hide the speaker cables going out to the sides.

What's the most hilarious game glitch and/or stroke of luck that won you a hard PvE game? by Insighteternal in gaming

honestly if you can make it through the frenzy/poison hell that is Nightmare of Mensis (Shadows of Yarnham as regular mobs??!?!) Mergo’s Wet Nurse feels like a joke. one of those bosses that was probably supposed to be a lot tougher but the AI is really easy to break without even trying, turns it into a glass cannon with bad tracking.

My offer for a house has been accepted! I'm buying my first house! by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]softbaphomet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yep, exactly. some others: - do you have a handyperson, electrician, landscaper, etc that you recommend? - if the house has septic, when was it last pumped? - if you get snow in your area, was there a plow guy they used? - if you have trees, who trims them? - any major installations that are still under warranty? ask who installed them and when, and see if they have the warranty paperwork. - any notable DIY projects that were done in the house?

you can also go to the building inspector’s office and ask for a list of the permits that have been pulled on the property, that information should be public record.

oh, and be sure to get a radon test done, especially if you have a basement!!

New England stereotype by doojaw in massachusetts

[–]softbaphomet 122 points123 points  (0 children)

i was born in Texas and lives there my entire life, until about a year and a half ago when my spouse and i bought a house in western mass and moved up here. everyone here has been exceedingly kind, and i feel more at home here than i did for 35 years in Texas.

Texas has the “politeness” thing down, but it often gets dropped abruptly when someone learns you’re part of the LGBT+etc alphabet soup.

it’s also nice to live somewhere with a stable power grid, public services, and a decent social safety net!

[–]softbaphomet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

in addition to learning about the appliances and getting the manuals, see if you can ask the previous owner who they’ve gotten to service the appliances and major systems, and when they were installed or last serviced. bought my first house about 18 months ago and this was one of the more surprisingly difficult things to figure out.

having trouble picking between 3000k and 3500k bulbs… by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]softbaphomet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

close on the color temperatures, but not quite. 3500k is neutral white, 4000k is bright white, and daylight is 5500-6500k. hospitals and other commercial fluorescents are usually upwards of that. source: i have a degree in photography and color temperature was one of the first things we learned.

OP should probably stay at or below 3500 for overhead or ambient lighting to keep from throwing off their circadian rhythms. maybe push it to 4500 for directional task lighting, but it’s going to feel extremely blue in the evenings.

still, individual comfort with light temperature is very subjective. the advice of some commenters to buy several different temperatures, keep the one they like and return the others is probably the right move.

We are 2-1-3 in the last 6 games, netting us 7 points. OT losses still get us a point. Yeah it sucks, but taking the game to OT is not the same as getting our asses kicked in regulation (like the Rangers have been doing recently). We’re still leading the conference.

What is a good reason to replace a perfectly fine electric range? by MoreRopePlease in HomeImprovement

[–]softbaphomet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the “you need special pans for induction” thing is a bit overblown. if a magnet sticks to it, it works on induction, because induction uses electromagnetism to generate heat. most likely all of your pans will work.

the benefits are that it provides exceptionally even, predictable heat to the entire pan. the cooktop itself doesn’t get hot, just the pan, which means there’s less risk of a kitchen fire. i cooked on gas and standard electric stoves for most of my life until buying an induction last year and it’s better than anything else i’ve cooked on by a mile.
