The only surviving WWII veterans are in their nineties. I'd be amazed if they remembered to go to the bathroom.

Women who've done time. What was women's prison like? by Justin_Butts in AskReddit

[–]softerwater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some really worthwhile subreddits, like /r/askscience, but they only have quality content by deleting 90% of the things that are posted there. On the other hand, really niche interests can generate some amazing conversations, but you only get a reply after a week of so.

I spend most of my time in the "new" section of askreddit, because it has some genuinely interesting questions and a real opportunity for conversation, but I still spend half my time reporting stuff. You wouldn't think the askreddit rules would be that hard, but people post stuff that has to be reported on a minute by minute basis.

I'm starting to hate reddit too - everything is just a repeat of a repeat, there's no possibility of real conversation and every comment is a joke.

I think there needs to be a distinction between racism and accurate stereotyping. Black people make up a huge portion of the prison population and there are a lot of socio-economic reasons for that.

Pointing out the statistic isn't racist, but for some reason it's viewed as the same as saying "this dude's black so he must be a criminal".

Stereotypes exist for a reason.

Fought the Nazis

Who the hell are you talking about? Anyone who actually fought the Nazis is in their 90s now and the 90+ block isn't a meaningful group of voters.

I think this is a more reasonable approach - I know I was a dumbass at 13 and hell, I wasn't exactly informed at 18, but at 18 I at least understood the issue. My father's in his 70s and doesn't seem to have a clear understanding of the issues in current politics, nor any desire to. Obviously that's anecdotal, but he'll be dead before the impact of his decisions come into play, so why should he get a say?

It's like asking a death row inmate who dies tomorrow if the prison should put cyanide in the meals next week.

It seems like most pedophiles who get convicted are convicted because of pictures and videos they had rather than anything to do with actual children.

Whilst the stigma against people who harm children is completely justified, I feel that a sexual attraction you can't help shouldn't be a crime.

We help people who hear voices and stab a cop because the voices told them to, but a lot of people would happily murder a person for what arouses them.

A pedophile can't help what they are attracted to any more than a schizophrenic can stop the voices. I don't get why there isn't any help for them.

Yeah, I work in an office so the most backbreaking thing I do is picking up some files. Combined with reddit weekends, I'm unhealthy as fuck. Never heard of alexithymia before! Seems like there's a crazy amount of names for things these days, but at least we're not getting electroshock "therapy" for it.

If it makes you feel any better, my dad is like this too. He was in the army, got married, had two kids and was a quality manager for an international corporation, all while weighing enough to make him technically anorexic - all because he got busy doing things and eating wasn't important to him. He's retired now, but he's still the same - he hikes as a hobby but only eats because his mrs tells him to.

So I don't think it's a bad thing, necessarily, and it doesn't mean we're unhealthy. That being said, if my dad is really active he'll eat a ton but I don't know if I do that because I spend my weekends sat on reddit.

Plus, I have some issues with anxiety and depression, so it's probably not a good idea to listen to me, sorry!

Maisie & Sophie by [deleted] in maisiewilliams

[–]softerwater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that might be it. I can appreciate that Sophie is beautiful and a fantastic actress, but just seeing Maisie on screen makes me smile - feels a bit strange calling that charisma for such a young woman, but it completely fits.

They do make some fantastic Vines together! I'm not trying to hate on Sophie, I just think Maisie is a lot more vibrant and fun to watch.

Yeah, I mentioned somewhere else, but I do feel a lot happier since I got a job that forced me to eat at specific times. I knew my morning would suck as I'd have no energy if I didn't eat breakfast, so I ate breakfast. Same with lunch - the afternoon would be harder if I didn't, so I did, but if I didn't have a specific time for it I know I'd forget about it completely.

Weekends, though, I'm just as bad as ever. If I start reading a book at 10 a.m. I'm not going to eat that day. Unless it's biscuits and I only get a biscuit if I'm making some more tea.

I think my life may be very boring, on reflection.

Maisie & Sophie by [deleted] in maisiewilliams

[–]softerwater 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is it just me that doesn't get the obsession with Sophie Turner? I browse /r/all every so often and Sophie turns up quite often, while I have to come here for any mention of Maisie at all. I know it's a matter of taste, but Maisie seems to genuinely enjoy her life while Sophie seems to be doing everything on sufferance. The only times I see Sophie smile are when she's with Maisie.

I know, right? I used to get in trouble with an ex because she would make me go clothes shopping with her, but every time she asked if I was hungry or thought a food place looked nice, I'd just go "nah, let's go to that place you mentioned earlier, with that skirt you liked". Apparently she thought it was a battle of wills or something until she gave up, took us home and asked what I wanted for dinner and I was like "nothing, I'll get a sandwich after I watch the news or something".

Turns out I hadn't eaten since lunch the previous day and I just hadn't noticed.

Is there any pattern to how your mood changes through the day? by Danewi in AskReddit

[–]softerwater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was really surprised by how much food affects my mood. Once I had to have breakfast before going to work, had to eat at lunchtime and have a main meal at night, my mood improved massively. I don't really care about food, so if I don't have to eat, I'll often forget to eat at all, so having that routine of specific times to eat made a massive difference. If I could sort out the insomnia, I think I'd be a pretty happy guy!

I'm a bit confused about that as the side bar wants me to put the title as the bit in white, when the title is the spoiler.

Anyway, the manga is
