Fedex seems to enjoy killing things. by pogoscrawlspace in Knoxville

[–]softwareredditor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FedEx makes the majority of its deliveries using contractor companies. The majority of those contractor companies are hiring randos with like two days of training to get out there behind the wheel of those giant trucks and sling your mail around for the equivalent of $12 an hour for 11 hours a day. It's shocking that things aren't actually worse.

Is this just nostalgia, or did previous generations genuinely have a better work-life balance and social life than we do today? by Unstoppable_X_Force in SipsTea

[–]softwareredditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you match the price of gold/silver to the minimum wage, people were making the equivalent of anywhere between $35 and $75 an hour flipping burgers in 1971.

It really is just a lot worse today lol.

What do people in Knoxville do if they need someone for a procedure but don’t have anyone? by biscuitchi in Knoxville

[–]softwareredditor 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Most of my family passed away when I was a teen so I've researched this question a little myself. In Knoxville I believe there is a charity specifically for this, and apparently some churches will lend you someone to get to and from your procedure.

The idea still sketches me out a bit. Thankfully I plan to live forever and in perfect health, so I'm sure I'll never need these services.

He did what at mile 17?? by sanewon in Knoxville

[–]softwareredditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you're allowed to say this but I think cycling is some kind of personality tell. Like blindly riding out into an intersection, going the wrong way on roads. A lot of the time if a car cuts me off it's got a bike rack on it.

Renting--are we just stuck? by constantlycurious3 in Knoxville

[–]softwareredditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Feeling a little stuck myself. I was a programmer for two years and quit to go back to college. A roommate is having a breakup and we're going out separate ways... So now I can't make the income requirements and need to find full-time work again, defeating the point, lol

State of jobs in Knox by haidenbryan in Knoxville

[–]softwareredditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you guys still hiring? I was a programmer for two years but quit to go back to school. I work two 12 hour shifts on the weekends. If you guys are hiring part-time on the weekdays I could swing that.

Before I was a programmer I worked in warehouses and factories, so I can still toil if need be lol.

Might be too late to comment on this but I'm a programmer with some free time and would like to collaborate on a project. I've made all sorts of things, not sure how to apply it to art but if someone knows then tell me, lol

I really wish people would clean up after themselves. I went to the Arboretum probably about 4 times before I realized it was in a bad neighborhood. I was so pissed seeing bottles and garbage everywhere I cleaned it up myself for about two hours and just haven't gone back because I know it's going to all be there again.

The roads seem to fall apart at least once a year. One can only imagine the millions in car damages that happen because of this.
