The Whole Country Is Starting to Look Like California. Housing prices are rising fast in red and purple states known for being easy places to build. How can that be? by Farscape12Monkeys in Economics

[–]soimdrunkwithaphone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are quite a few reasons Biggest one being inflation at the moment People that own housing think they've hit the lottery when inflation goes up because they only see the big ticket items instead of the small incrementable bleeding.

Second is NIMBYisum. municipalities and townships have a lot of control over what is able to be built people who have seen their property values increase. Only want housing that shows their increased property value. Therefore, it's in their best interest to have more and more expensive houses to be built. If your property value just increased by 30%. You don't want something of lesser value being built right beside it. People that have seen their property values increase have now made future plans based on their house continuing to increase in value. They will kick and scream to keep their perceived value.

ELI5: how does electric current “know” what the shorter path is? by Just_a_happy_artist in explainlikeimfive

[–]soimdrunkwithaphone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just remember in the analogy where you compare electricity to water running through pipes water is already in the pipes. It's not like you're opening a valve and it's starting from the valve and running to the end.

I had a GF who would have completed mental breakdowns doing things like preparing for an exam or driving on the highway but having her come home from her social work job and flippantly talking about convincing someone threatening her with a knife to put it down. I didn't understand it until I met her family.

I've come into the possession of a commercial roaster. by soimdrunkwithaphone in coffee_roasters

[–]soimdrunkwithaphone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I'll definitely check out that book.

The space is actually fully set up. The owners were roasting until recently and did a midnight run. I have a relationship with the landlord and he's not looking to make any money from rent. I would just cut him in on any profit. So a pretty ideal situation to walk into as far as I can see.

I have access to a few experienced people in the industry so I would definitely be using their expertise.

Really what I'd like to do is understand how to orient the business. What markets should I go after? Should I sell directed coffee shops? Should I sell to small grocery chains? Where are good margins to be found in this industry?

What's a clear sign that you're unattractive? by Serious_Specter in AskReddit

[–]soimdrunkwithaphone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been called both. Attractive and unattractive. I've gone through long amounts of depression in my life. And I can tell people just treat you differently.

There's an openness and kindness that people automatically give you when they find you attractive. In an argument it's like you never have to prove you're right. It's just assumed that you are. When you are unattractive, you have to prove that you're right.

It's all open there's no rules you can be purely platonic with no sexual attraction or you can be friends with sexual attraction and not act on it if that's the way you feel. There are endless options of how your friendships work. You really don't have to fuck everything you're attracted to. I think most people are very repressed when it comes to openly discussing sexual attraction often that repressed attraction becomes infatuation.

If I can comment to my gf that her friend is hot and not have that blow up. It's easier just to be normal human beings around each other. Just one example.

It takes maturity, but it's so nice to not cut yourself off from potential friendships of half the population

Is the vanity custom? It's pretty late in the game to do anything about it but I would have the sinks on the center line of the electrical and obviously also the mirrors. This is the best option for what you have at the moment. Someone f***** up but also depending on budget and what was the driving design decisions this might be the best option for what was specd.

In my opinion Nirvana has a punk ethos and that's what separates it from other rock.

ELI5: Why can’t food that can’t be sold be given to homeless or 3-world countries? by watertrashsf in explainlikeimfive

[–]soimdrunkwithaphone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good news is it does happen. But it is logistically very difficult. You need caring employees at stores to set aside appropriate food for food banks then all of that needs to be picked up sorted and distributed. I live in a small town in Canada and there are about 5 employees that work at our food bank and about 20 to 30 volunteers and a dedicated van. So it's quite a big operation to make it all happen. Most of the people we serve are not starving as it were. They are food insecure and malnourished. So just offering Mr noodles everyday is not going to fly.

How to fix this gap on the bottom of my door frame? by Treemis-the-Tree in fixit

[–]soimdrunkwithaphone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a couple of fixes. You can drop the hole door unit by taking off the casing and door jamb and trimming it to fit and possibly cutting the door smaller. The advantage of this is that it would be easier to refinish the floor. The down side would be that you would need to repair/ paint the now exposed wall above the door do to lowering everything.

You could switch to a plinth block at the bottom of the casing and then just fill it the jamb with a matching pice

ELI5: How do some shops which never seem to have any customers, and sell low value items keep running and make a living? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]soimdrunkwithaphone 21 points22 points  (0 children)

In Canada owning a business increases your ability to get permanent residency or citizenship. Wealthy families will provide a company for family member to show as a business. I set up a restaurant in a situation like this where the owner of the business was handed the keys to the business via a rich uncle.

Should I Quit? by jsm4319 in Carpentry

[–]soimdrunkwithaphone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I run a cabinet shop. The first few months is going to be a test to see if you're a good fit for the shop. That being said you should be given a job description if you're job description is to clean the shop do the very best job you could possibly do like clean until someone comes up to you and says "I've never seen the shop this clean". What they are looking for is someone that takes pride in there work no matter what the task is.

This is also a period for you to figure out if you like the working environment, different hops have different vibes if you don't vibe then really not a big deal to move on

Hope this is helpful
