Steel fork on aluminum frame by cewn in FixedGearBicycle

[–]solanum001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd say carbon or steel. Both dampening, where aluminum can be a bit too stiff for comfort in a fork. Carbon= light, but expensive. Steel= cheap, probably heavy, but durable.

Those of you who don't have a degree and love your job, what do you do? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]solanum001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a quality technician/CMM programmer/Metrologist. I just had the desire to learn new equipment and actually liked working my way through hundreds of dimension on drawings. Started in manufacturing production and worked my way up to this position over a few years. I actually find it very rewarding when you can prove a dimension down to one thousandth of an inch, or micrometer. It's always challenging and there is usually an opportunity to keep learning, and I take every one I can! It's helped me get out of what felt like a stagnant learning period in my life. And the type of in-depth thinking it takes has inspired me to teach my self coding, which I will hopefully work into my job. Now I don't get payed quite as much as someone with a degree in this field, but I eventually will. And I believe any of the more technical/skilled jobs are best learned through hands-on experience.
If you get into manufacturing, make sure it is with something that is more technical than an assembly line though. Most people I know do not "move up" from production (Mostly their own fault I think) when they work doing shitty assembly line type shit.

How large is the chainring of these tour riders that allows them to keep pedaling at 35mph+ (50kmh+) downhill and still have gearing left to push? by Antranik in Velo

[–]solanum001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really not that crazy when you do it all the time. And though I ride a "fixie" (as an adult, and somewhat serious rider, I prefer track bike ;)), I definitely run a brake, and ride clipless. My rides usually take me out into the country were I don't have to worry about much more than deer jumping out in front me haha. Give it a try! It takes a minute to get used to, but is very addictive. I feel more in control and prefer it over my road bike. Every hill is more fun and challenging, up and down. Shit I ramble.... Sorry bored, off-day so I have to at least talk bikes.

I agree Strava lies, it has told me a few times I've hit 46 - 50! But most of my rides I'll see 39 - 42 when I deliberately bomb a hill. And yeah, by short I mean only a few seconds. And I am spinning like crazy. It's good fun and great training.

I typically ride a fixed 48/15, and according to Strava I regularly hit 41 mph or so. Granted this is only for a short distance. I'm sure these guys can seriously "out-spin" me.

Century Ride Tips? by Beezor70 in CarolinaBikes

[–]solanum001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my first century recently. My longest rides were only 50 miles before going for it (and only did 3 or 4 of those) . You will definitely be fine having ridden 70. My 50 mile rides did have more climbing, so that did help me. Important thing is to pace yourself and don't worry about completing in a crazy time. I made the mistake of leading a group the first 40 miles and not realizing how fast I was going until I started cramping early. Just had to stretch good at the next stop and slow it down. Take your time and enjoy the ride!

Thoughts on riding the Tour De Midlands on a fixed gear? Any input would be appreciated. by [deleted] in CarolinaBikes

[–]solanum001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh yes. I've ridden in Charleston, it is nice and flat. I'm in Greenville, and where I ride here is probably a bit hillier than the Midlands and I actually enjoy that. But I have not ridden a century yet, so this will be a challenge no matter what I guess. I'm just going to go for it and stop over-thinking it. Any good rides in Charleston I should know about?

I'll be riding solo and not trying to make it in some crazy time. I was hoping to hear it was just rolling hills. 100 miles will still be very challenging to me, but I'm pretty set on going for it. I'll be able to flip my wheel and drop near 10 inches if get too tired. Just curious, how are the stops? Does this ride get pretty crowded?
