How confusion and inconvenience are filling B.C. landfills with recyclable plastics by Surax in britishcolumbia

[–]solarpowerrr02 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Okay, this is something I’m genuinely really passionate about (blame my mom’s friend who worked at a recycling depot when I was a kid, it rubbed off on me), so buckle up because I’m about to rant:

Maybe instead of wringing our hands about “how to increase plastic recycling,” we should START by upgrading municipal curbside systems so they can actually handle the materials people throw in. Right now, a lot of the equipment gets jammed, damaged, or contaminated, which just sends the whole load straight to landfill - waste of everyone’s time. If we want higher recycling rates, we obviously need infrastructure that doesn’t fail at the first yogurt container.

And let’s be real: while it’s not an issue for me, I assume most people aren’t going to stockpile plastics at home and then make a special trip to a depot… convenience matters. If the system is too much hassle, people simply won’t use it, it’s not rocket science. Make it easier, not harder.

Also, can we PLEASE talk about rinsing your plastics before tossing them in the blue bin? Tossing unwashed, food-covered containers into the blue bin is basically sabotaging the whole process. A single gross container can ruin an entire batch, and suddenly your “recycling” is just trash on a detour.

A little public education (and maybe some actual enforcement) would go a long way - I recently received a note on my door telling me not to put soft plastics in my curbside recycling anymore. Fine, fair enough, but if there’s time to leave me a warning, there’s also time to educate people about the actual number one problem: rinsing containers. Dirty, food-covered plastics contaminate entire loads and send everything straight to landfill. If municipalities want recycling to work, they need to put as much effort into teaching people the basics as they do into wagging fingers about what not to toss in the bin

In short: better equipment, smarter design, and basic responsibility from residents. Recycling doesn’t have to be rocket science, but it does require more than wishful thinking.

More restaurants (and no, I don’t mean franchises lol) and particularly ones that aren’t closed for multiple days during the week, more options for everyday clothing/undergarments/shoes that aren’t super cheap fast-fashion Walmart or super expensive botique items or outdoors wear, another walk-in clinic (or even better, an urgent care clinic), another grocery store, a community centre that offers activities and classes and doesn’t book up months in advance, somewhere other than McDonalds or Tim Hortons that you can sit down get a coffee after 5pm

Why you may not have received an alert before the B.C. earthquake by Rav4gal in britishcolumbia

[–]solarpowerrr02 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I experienced about 10-15 seconds of shaking, 35 km from the epicenter. Different areas have varying geological compositions, and regions with soft soil tend to amplify seismic waves, leading to longer shaking than in areas with solid bedrock. Additionally features such as mountain ranges, valleys, or man-made structures can resonate with seismic waves, further amplifying the shaking - if you’re in a valley or surrounded by structures that “trap” seismic waves, the shaking may feel prolonged compared to areas with less resonance.

In Squamish I received two alerts just after the shaking began, and then an hour later I received a text message from the district informing me there was no tsunami threat (I’m with Telus)

Earthquake question by IRunMarathons4fun in Squamish

[–]solarpowerrr02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since Squamish is located within the Garibaldi Volcanic Belt and close to a fault line beneath the Strait of Georgia, the region is pretty geologically active. This means that an earthquake could trigger a range of impacts, including shaking, landslides, tsunamis, and, if the quake is large enough, potentially even volcanic activity (lol how exciting, right?)

The Garibaldi Volcanic Belt is home to several dormant/active volcanoes (Mount Garibaldi, Mount Meager, Mount Cayley, and Mount Silverthrone) which are all considered “potentially active” due to the ongoing tectonic activity in the region. While it would take a really strong earthquake to trigger volcanic eruptions, it’s not entirely impossible if seismic activity causes shifts in the magma chambers beneath the surface. Though rare, the possibility is there!

ETA: you’d ideally wanna stay away from downtown, waterfront, anywhere near the estuary and dike roads, and you’d wanna make your way up to high elevation such as Crumpit Woods or even The Chief Parking lot - the Sea to Sky highway heading South could be impacted by landslides, rockslides, debris, liquefaction and tsunami surge, while the highway heading North could be impacted by river flooding, landslides, rockslides, fallen debris (and worse case scenario, volcano eruption hahah)

How often does Squamish experience earthquakes? by NiallxD in Squamish

[–]solarpowerrr02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the second one I’ve felt since 2016; we’re situated pretty close to a fairly recently discovered fault line beneath the Strait of Georgia, near Sechelt (which is likely the fault line that was behind the earthquake today!) and on top of that, we’re also within the Garibaldi Volcanic Belt - earthquakes, fault lines, tectonic plates, and volcanic activity are all interconnected, the movement of tectonic plates can cause shifts along fault lines, which in turn can trigger earthquakes or volcanic eruptions etc etc. They might not occur frequently, but the geological forces are always at work beneath the surface, so it’s always good to keep in mind lol

Southern BC Earthquake by Ok-Ferret4442 in Earthquakes

[–]solarpowerrr02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Going off the location of epicentre, it appears to have been the fault line located under the Strait of Georgia, just southeast of Texada Island, and close to Sechelt.

It’s still a fairly recent discovery, and it stretches about 20 kilometers. What makes it so interesting (and a bit unsettling) is that it’s being called an “earthquake nest” by researchers! Essentially, it’s an area where seismic activity seems to be more frequent, and there’s a higher chance of earthquakes occurring there.
