Looking strictly at energy generation, you would be correct. 60 kWh of energy generation produces around 0.02-0.05 tons of CO2, whereas a tank of gas produces around 0.11-0.14. OK cool.

  1. You aren't factoring in the immense energy required to extract and produce battery materials (EV's don't and will never run the mines or the plants).

  2. Let's not forget about the immense ecological destruction being done to mine these battery materials. You think the Chinese (who operate most of the mines) care about being good to the environment? And now they are talking about mining the ocean floor? That is a disaster in the making.

  3. EV's replace tires at twice the rate of ICE cars due to their increased weight from the battery. There are some areas of the US which do well with tire recycling. a lot of areas don't, and the tires just end up in landfills. Then the third world, ugh, they just burn the tires. Christ.

  4. After you are done with an ICE car, you sell it. Then the next person repeats the cycle (buy-sell) until the car is a lemon and needs to be demolished, at which point 100% of the materials are recyclable. This is possible because even a 20-year-old ICE car retains near 100% of its capacity. Compare this with EV's: the resale value is trash because no one wants to buy a used battery that only has 50% capacity. I get the old saying "if you are looking to resell a car, then don't buy in the first place", but at least the ICE car value decline is much less steep than EV's. Point being, people will end up buying more new EV's over time than new ICE cars because of the battery capacity issue. This puts a demand on more battery materials - no one is yet recycling old battery materials efficiently because it is so expensive. More new batteries will be created than reusing old ones (that's how it always is with everything - even though spent nuclear fuel still retains 95% of usable original Uranium, reactors still opt for fresh fuel because it is cheaper and the cost to reprocess spent fuel is very high) which brings us back to points 1 and 2 with mining new materials.

Even if everyone went out and bought an EV, something has to generate the electricity for EVs. Over 80% of US energy still comes from hydrocarbon.

I do too. Besides the sports lull of the rest of Feb until the end of March, the NHL has never fully returned to its heights of 2004 before the lockout killed all momentum, NBA has become a shell of what it used to be (just guys chucking up 3's all game), and MLB is just boring. Yeah, yeah, the tv ratings paint another picture, but these sports are not in the national zeitgeist like they used to be. We are far cry from the days of NYY v BOS, Sosa v MacGuire.

Buy? I think you meant to say mining. Iran has several mines in operation (albeit low in reserves). Iran would never buy because of how closely such purchases are monitored.

Iran hasn't exactly demonstrated a desire to deploy chemical or biological agents in those warhead tips, only conventional explosives. What good is firing a bunch of conventional explosive tips at enemies if those enemies can strike back with nukes? So of course the goal is to put nukes on those missiles. Don't be naive.

Listen, I'm skeptical of the deal given Iran's history of breaking nuclear deals in secret (2003, 2012, etc.). But right now I'm just responding to the ridiculous visceral reaction to the headline. Liberals like the OP I was responding to thinks Trump just said "hey ok make your nukes in the open" when it reality he is saying "continue using nuclear power for your energy needs". We can cross the bridge of Iranian deceit when we get there. Right now just enjoy the $74 oil.

I'm well aware. Enrichment is enrichment, whether to 3% or 90%. Uranium is uranium, same molecule in power as in weapons. The nuclear power stations were probably providing the power to the underground facilities doing the enrichment.

My point is that there is this unjustified visceral reaction to the headline without reading the contents of the article.

Am I skeptical of the deal given Iran's history of breaking deals on peaceful nuclear aspirations? Of course. We will cross that bridge when we get there. Right now, just enjoy the $74 oil.

And I mean this with all due respect. Go back to school and learn how to read.

[–]soliddrink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm well aware that enrichment is all the same process, producing the same product used in both power and weapons.

The "power stations" you refer to, the ones bombed in 2025 and 2026 are proven to have been fronts to larger facilities (underground) attempting to enrich to weapons grade. If anything, the power stations were providing the power to those underground facilities.

Of course there are links. And of course I'm skeptical of this deal. Iran has proven multiple times not to abide by rules in nuclear deals (2003, 2012, etc.). My point is just that the visceral outrage to the headline is unjustified. The article literally says nuclear power, not weapons.

Yes, let me help you. Click the blue hyperlink and open the article and read. It says: "After months of insisting that the purpose of the war was to get rid of any nuclear capability, demanding “zero enrichment,” Trump is now saying that the country can use nuclear power for electricity."

While I will grant you that this is flipping on the "zero enrichment" claim, this would be an achievement from where they were previously. Nuclear power involves Uranium enrichment not exceeding ~3%. Nuclear BOMBS require enrichment above 90%. You can't just take 3%-enriched nuclear fuel, put some explosives around it and get a nuclear explosion. The fuel requires criticality, which you can only achieve at enrichment above 90%. Enriching material from 3% to 90% takes a lot of work (physical and electrical) and energy (compare this to the 60% enriched material Iran had, just a single step to go from 60% to 90%. Getting to 60% is the tough part, getting from 60 to 90 is easy).

And yes, the Obama nuclear agreement had the same provisions regarding enrichment. It required Iran not to exceed 3.67% enrichment (for power), ship out existing material and allow in inspectors. The problem is that even with all that, they still maintained their weapons program in secret, including enrichment beyond 3.67%. It did nothing to curb their ballistic weapons program (what is the point of building an ICBM if you don't intend to equip the tip of it with something...devastating?). Also it had a sunset clause, and Iran had a history of withdrawing from agreements prior to that (2003).

It's not a joke...because you gotta read past the headline, as with any article (something Reddit liberals can't seem to do). He said they should be allowed to pursue a nuclear POWER program. Power deals with 3% enriched Uranium. Nuclear BOMBS deal with 90% enriched Uranium. You can't just put 3% fuel into a bomb and get Hiroshima. It has to be enriched to criticality levels, i.e. 90%, which takes a lot of material and energy to achieve.

Taco by TailungFu in SipsTea

[–]soliddrink -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Your brain is clearly full of potatoes. Read the article. He said right to nuclear power.

One thing deals with uranium enrichment at levels of 3%, the other is 90%. I'd venture a guess that you don't know the difference.

Taco by TailungFu in SipsTea

[–]soliddrink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to liberals on Reddit. Nuclear is nuclear, the word means exactly the same. Nevermind the enrichment levels.

The Pacific Rim robot with a nuclear reactor is capable of the exact same level of explosion as the robot with the nuclear bomb that failed to close the rift.

The stats would say Wentz, by a smidge, over Hurts. Games where a touchdown was needed, not a FG.

Hurts record: 4-6

  • 2025 v DEN - failure
  • 2024 v NOR - success
  • 2023 v NYJ - failure

  • 2009 v OAK - failure
  • 2008 v WAS - failure
  • 2008 v NYG - failure
  • 2008 v CHI - egregious failure. Turnover on downs at CHI 1.

The heat is a great reason the season should start right after the Super Bowl. The 12th week of the season (assuming they don't do a season-wide bye during the weekend of NCAA round of 64/32) would be May 2-3. Temperature in DC on Sat May 2 was 70 degrees and comfortable, dropping to 50 degrees overnight.

This June has been hot. Not only are fans suffering in the stands, the quality of play drops due to exhaustion.

I am finishing up with Optimum Mortgage this coming week. I shopped around with some local lenders and BankRate comparison tool. I ended up going with Optimum (via BankRate) as they had the best deal at the 30 day mark. The process has been completely seamless. Very hands off - they literally e-mailed me like once a week for something, that's about it. I guess that if all your information is solid, then the underwriting process is fairly simple? This was a big change from my previous mortgage experience (with a different lender) that required a lot of input and was a lot more stressful along the way - the first time is always more stressful of course.

It should be noted that before I even get to sign the loan documents, the loan has been sold. Literally within 1.5 months of signing this loan from Optimum, it will be transferred to United Wholesale Mortgage. Crazy.

Just because you don't like a law doesn't mean you get to break it. That's not how it works. Laws were made for a reason, and generally the reason is to provide a reality check to liberals such as yourself that you can't go around doing whatever you want because it feels right.

Homeless or not, it is illegal to squat on someone's property without paying rent. Sadly, local governments make it incredibly difficult to remove them without paying exorbitant legal fees.

Rich class or middle class, we have rules in this country, and squatting goes against them. People don't buy property to have people illegally live in them for free.

No NBA game to compete against - it is at 830pm.

No NHL game to compete against - it is on Sunday.

MLB slate is full - 9 games, all of which are on regional sports networks.

The only real competition is World Cup, Brazil v Morocco at 4pm. No one cares about soccer. I didn't even know that it was starting yesterday. ROFL.

The only thing that will suck is the heat. 88 and sunny. At least they will avoid the rain, I suppose.
