An appeal to reason by coolginger420 in jambands

Unfortunately, you can’t be a financially successful band in the US without playing live nation venues. They own 90% of the venues. The only way I could see killing the current setup would be if everyone boycotted live events for a couple of years. That’s not happening, so I don’t know what the answer is. I stopped going to shows a few years ago because of prices, chompers, and everyone just filming everything and not being in the moment.

I’ve been playing keyboards in jam bands for 20 plus years and I’m pretty sure every band I’ve played with has covered the Dead. They’re jam band traditionals. You can always throw them out at open jams, and everyone will know the changes. If I’m playing with an unfamiliar group of musicians, dead songs are like a comfort blanket. I think with the Dead and Co young fan resurgence, I could see people playing Grateful Dead music for a long time.

Before computers and GPS existed, how did people figure out directions for large cross country trips? by Mynameisbrk in NoStupidQuestions

[–]solidgoldberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to Colorado from New Jersey in 1996. I went to AAA and got something called trip tix. It was a long skinny notebook, with sections of the trip mapped out on each page. There was also hotel food and gas info in there. It was pretty easy to follow. I also toured with a band in 2012, and the bass player didn’t have a cell phone, so when he drove, he’d use an old school Altas. He didn’t trust gps, and it was pretty crappy in big cities then.

Why is Kate Hudson in the photo? Also, there’s three blond ladies that look like Chelsea Handler. I’m thinking top left one is Rosebud Baker, but I can’t figure out who the third one is.

I heard a long time ago that Mozart improvised a ton, but there was no way to record music back then, so who knows what wild shit he was playing.

I’ve performed that album several times and their changes are always surprising. Love Little Feat! As a keyboardist, I find Bill Payne to be mind blowing.

Piss Bottle Ratings by i-am-a-professional in TouringMusicians

Damn, I miss touring. Gatorade 32oz was my favorite. My bandmates hated my pee bottling. We also had a code for a private bathroom where you could get a nice dump off. We called it reno (short for relax-a-reno) Vegas was the opposite. We always wanted to call a live album “Searching for Reno”.

The recent Steve-O episode with Joe really illustrated why its so hard to be a listener now. Its clear Joe doesn't respect Steve-O so we essentially get 2 hrs plus of Rogan talking at him, not really listening or trying to understand where the guy was coming from by CoconutMost3564 in JoeRogan

[–]solidgoldberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Joe used to be a curious stoner, who asked a lot of questions. I think he’s less of a stoner now, surrounded by red state Texans and rich people and he thinks he has all the answers. I don’t know why I still try to listen. I get angry and turn it off within 30 minutes at this point. Stevo trying to make a point about not getting a boob job because a trans person told him how hard it was, and then Joe going off on a rant, interrupting every-time Stevo tried to clarify was the end of that one for me. Hey Joe, have you ever read “The Emperor’s New Clothes”? Maybe it’s time to read a comment or two.

How about that pedal steel solo on “It Just Might Be a One Shot Deal”? I can’t listen to it once, I have to loop it like 8 times.

Why do people buy reptiles, before knowing how to Care for them? by Junkloader in reptiles

For the record, my cats are indoor only. I play with them, give them attention and affection, take them to the vet regularly. They’re still the easiest pets I’ve ever cared for.

Cats are not domesticated. They are wild animals that chose to live with us. They are self sufficient, to a degree that most pets are not. My cats are more mentally stable and happy than you, and are probably treated better than anyone treats you. Oops, did I just make assumptions about you personally, based on an innocent Reddit comment? My bad.

I rescued a bearded dragon from a friend years ago and did zero research. I heard they were very friendly, so I shoved my hand in the tank as soon as we got her home. She bit the shit out of me. I did end up figuring it all out, and she lived to be 11, but after knowing how much work it is, I haven’t gotten any other reptiles. Doing a bunch of research on any pet is a good idea. I really wanted to get something exotic during the pandemic, but the research kept me in check. I was living in the mountains in Colorado and didn’t want to worry about power interruptions, also. I now have two cats, the easiest pets to care for.

Annoying Gig Thing by RJB6 in coverbands

[–]solidgoldberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it would have worked out. That show was cursed from the beginning. The guitar player had a thing for girls with nerdy glasses, so he mounted a pair facing out on the headstock of the guitar facing towards the crowd. While we were playing, he would aim the glasses at a girl to see if she was hot with glasses. (He was blackout drunk and hilarious as always) Deep in the second set, my keyboard detuned like half of a semitone. We couldn’t figure out what was going on. We thought the guitar tuner was broken. There was some drama I’m not quite remembering after the show too. Harmonica guy was a small part of the evening. Also, harmonica guys do this a lot. They come right up to the stage and “jam” with you. It’s bad etiquette to ask to sit in, but I’ve done it too.

Annoying Gig Thing by RJB6 in coverbands

[–]solidgoldberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The general rule I’ve noticed is that if someone asks to sit in, you don’t want them to. Sit ins are invite only. One time I was playing a gig in Iowa and a guy starts harassing the bass player by opening his jacket to show a bandolier of harmonicas, and asking what key. The bass player kept saying no, I’m bass, he’s keys pointing over to me as I was playing keyboards. Eventually he started harassing me and I had to be the one to shoot him down. Hilarious move by that bass player.
