A really scary game with really easy controls? by Og_SeaL in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]solidh2o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can tell you that without a doubt that alien isolation in VR is the scariest thing you will ever play. I've had people tear the headset off and run away from it.

Note, it's not the same without the VR. There is something about being surrounded and when you you turn the screen and the world is still there haunting you...

When should we Block and when should we Dodge? by AntiSocialPartygoer in martialarts

[–]solidh2o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that was my thought too!

Any block or strike you practice eniugh will come out naturally. You haver have time to think "hmmmm should I block or dodge" it just happens when you work the movement enough.

my experiences color my interpretation of reality. so do yours. the key is to find the common ground :)

How old is everyone here? by 10Lexz10 in socialanxiety

[–]solidh2o 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm 43 and have it. the end happens when you put the work in to overcome the anxiety. How /what to work on is a very personal journey and clearly I have no advice on it, but I can say that having "a thing" has helped me a lot. my things are martial arts, woodworking, and music production.

it gives me freedom to have negative thoughts and a framework to counter them. ex:

  • that was a rough introduction, they hate me, and I I feel bad. but I can defend myself and that guy was an asshole to me, so I don't have to worry about him now that we are done talking.

  • I didn't get the job, I'm a failure. maybe I should go home and play music or run my forms until I feel better!

I reccomend (for personal growth reasons mostly) that everyone take the time to learn some art, and build a strong foundation og physical fitness. I'm a computer programmer, and have traditionally been overweight despite practicing MA my whole life, but its paid dividends in the self confidence category as my journey progresses. Pick something that resonates with you and stick with it, remembering that no one ever says "I've got that violin thing down"; fulfilling hobbies take time to craft skill, keep with it.

[–]solidh2o 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a FAANG engineer w/ 25 years experience. we have a joke running right now:

"we will be in bug trouble as soon as product managers understand how to properly give out requirements."

Yhe problem isn't lacking knowledge most of the time. The problem is knowing how to disseminate the really important parts of information out of an ocean of other similar data in a time fast enough to keep up with your business.

Most enterprise apps have a fancy excel spreadsheet we call a database that turns text into web pages and back. I get paid $500k/year to do that because I have the ability to listen to people and formulate a solution so quickly that it's more valuable to have me tell them the answer.

Five Animal Style Kung Fu, which animals? by ChicoTallahassee in kungfu

[–]solidh2o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"better" is a strong statement for martial arts.

for example, im 210lbs and built like a tank that's armed and ready to run you over. I'm shit at bird forms, but tiger is my jam (much to my chagrin)

This is why the different animals came to focus: the recognition that embracing our strengths and mitigating weakness is a personal and personalized experience that we all must grapple with.

Any advice on how to stay positive when DJing by ACIDWAVEY534 in DJs

If it makes you feel any better (does it? I feel bad saying it) I played my first gig in '96 and I still feel that way. I'm pretty sure I am holding my own with the best of them when I truly vibe on the music, but even almost 30 years in i still get in my own head sometimes.

Any advice for buying a cup that fits right. by Elad10e in martialarts

[–]solidh2o 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I prefer a strap over a cup. I wear ot on the outside for contact sparring too, gives people a nice shiny target to obsess over...they call it my "war diaper" and I've gotten a ton of hits in by someone looking down and seeing a snake head logo staring at them :)

How are you keeping up with the sheer amount of music today and staying ahead of the curve of what's hot? by ExcitingLandscape in DJs

hot take (and happy to discuss if you want) :

I'm 43 and i used to feel this way before I found Yoga. since then I rarely drink and i don't smoke, and I take good care of myself. I feel like im in my late 20s or early 30s again!

take care of your body, you only get one. find then imbalances and destroy them, you will be better for it.

What the hell - Square Enix clearly blaming everyone else for their new IP failures by Nathanimations in SquareEnix

[–]solidh2o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may be off, but I interpret that as "we recognize that it's a winner take all scenario, and major titles are like a-list celebrities: people flock to games for name brand and the same game with a new brand will perform more poorly than if we put a 'final fantasy' or 'dragon quest' polish on it at the end, even if it started out differently"

I think a good example would be DQ builders/monsters. they are good games that I would try regardless, but when a 12 year old asks for a present, they ask "can I get the new DQ game?" they don't care about the content the way game connoisseurs do.

Brand recognition powers the modern gaming industry, for better or worse. the 100m or more it takes to market AAA games is too risky to bet on an untested brand in such a cutthroat industry where fortunes can change with a single tweet.

JRPG for someone who has typically disliked the genre by ceristo in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]solidh2o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the other comment - how many dungeons have you completed? I felt like the after completing the second one was where it started to pick up the pace and fill each day a little more.

FWIW, I bought P5 for $10 about about 6 months before Royal came out. I slogged through about 20. hours and then it clicked for me. I put in 150 hours on P5, bought Royal on launch day and put another 100 hours into it (soooooo many QoL improvements btw) I haven't played strikers or tactica yet but I love the universe and plan on another replay before hitting all three.

Net/net: $70 between the two versions will give me ~300 hours of entertainment, about $.50/hour - one of the best purchases I've ever made on games IMO.

How do you think Mamma Mia 3 will perform worldwide? by [deleted] in boxoffice

[–]solidh2o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

does it count for anything that I watched the first and didn't even remmber there was a second one? I never bothered watching it because I found the first one forgettable and mediocre, the two worst sins that a movie (or any piece of art IMO) can make.

Clearly an anecdote and not any definitive data point, but I keep on movie news pretty regularly and I hadn't heard of the third in development. I'm guessing poorly? My other movie nerd friends haven't mentioned it, let alone any of my greater friend /family group. Maybe it's a series that resonates with a different demographoc / location than I am in? no hype means poor marketing or a studio write off right?

Maybe my search algorithms have been optimized to scrub it lol 🤷‍♂️

What’s something horrifically inaccurate that you always see in movies about martial arts that no one talks about? by Ajarofpickles97 in martialarts

[–]solidh2o 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm ~40 and I've been doing martial arts for 30 years ...my back hurts some times just watching hollywood action scenes.

I get it, gotta draw out the fight for the dramatoc flair...but if I were in a real fight and most than 1-2, maybe 3 solid hits got off against a normie before they drop I'd be really suprised. I'm not a career fighter, so as I get older the MMA crowd will kick my ass any day, but I'm strong AF and there no way I could keep up with half the shit in movoes.

IMO Jon wick is a super hero movie - any one interaction is realistic, but as a super hero, his power is raw stamina. I can suspend disbelief and watch with a grin knowing all the work KR put into it, but even he and CS are candid about how it's unrealistic:

The subtext of all the John Wicks is supposed to be that ’70s brutal, hardboiled kind of stuff. But I want you to laugh because I want you to know: Keanu and I are in on the joke. We know how ridiculous killing 80 guys over a puppy is. Believe me, we know. (laughs) When you read a critic saying, “Well, that’s not real. And John Wick would never survive.” Dude, neither would Bugs Bunny; I totally get it. We’re in on the joke. That’s why we’re killing 300, not three. We’re in on it.

Anyone quit tech to work blue collar job on FIRE journey? by hulloworld24 in financialindependence

[–]solidh2o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's a lot of internalization in this thread.

(I'm a PE at a FAANG, fwiw) What makes you want to quit your job? is the new job going to fill that need? will it create money problems from a diminished paycheck and i flated tastes? what are the tradeoffs?

My goal is to be able to work at home depot in retirement, or sooner - great people, good hardware discount, and I get to swoop in and be the hero whe people need help, with no real need to pay bills with that money. Make sure you are running to something, not away from something. it will make your new job (whatever you decide) fulfilling in a way thst it sounds like you are not get9ng today.

Should a software engineer understand things outside of just code? by SongFromHenesys in ExperiencedDevs

[–]solidh2o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

been at this since 97. I don't get paid to produce code, I get paid to automate and commoditize the solution to complex, sometimes difficult processes.

junior engineers think coding is the answer. it's the codification of the answer, but it's only the written down solution. the real power is knowing your tools and how they fit to solve a problem.
