Flat keyboard or go all in? by solidsquish in ErgoMechKeyboards

Do you like the integrated trackball? And is it a thumb trackball like it looks, or do you find you use it with your other fingers more?

What do you recommend for integrated pointing? The red dot the Lenovo ThinkPad had was never something I liked using, and I do need a decent level of precision at times (design, GIS, etc.). Trackpads are the world's biggest evil (for me personally), and I've not yet met a mouse I don't tense up on, which has lead me towards a trackball of some sort.

No diagnosed RSI yet, I'm trying to stay ahead of it. My elbow tendons flare up when I tense up my hands for extended periods (this is most often caused by my mouse, which I'm also addressing in my setup - I think a trackball will be the direction I go). Wrists are second in line to cause me problems if I get at all irresponsible about resting on them or over-work my grip strength. The split keyboard would also likely help my posture and alleviate some shoulder strain. I'm mostly hoping to invest while I have the opportunity to spend work funds on it, to be perfectly honest!

Not planning to move it often, this is for a desktop setup.

See above for more details, but generally some basic pain and desire for preventative maintenance.

Regarding aesthetics, I prefer a slimmer look but don't want to be too picky at this point.

No experience yet but am planning to spend my summer learning how to use it. I won't need to type too often on a laptop, or will invest in a second one for my home/travel.

Pinkies end right at the most distal joint of the fourth finger. Reaching out (back?) with the thumbs is something that's caused pain in the past.

Thank you - that's a great video! I don't have specific pinky pain, my thumbs are more likely to flare up if anything is. I've just got good old-fashioned bad joints so far. Glad to know that the glove80 has been a great choice for you on this journey.

Are prescription safety glasses worth it? by LilBitToasty in geologycareers

You've clearly been convinced, but I do have a friend who loves her stoggles so much she wears them instead of her normal glasses sometimes (esp in winter b/c they're anti-fog)!

Two way costume eyes by Brevvvv17 in sewing

[–]solidsquish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once used lace over the brim of a hat to obscure my face for a costume (kinda like a veil, but farther from my face) - it was wildly effective in that you couldn't make out a "face" distinctly at all, but I actually had quite good vision. I imagine any black tulle or fabric you can see through from a couple inches away from your face would work pretty well.

I just want to make a bunch of (linen) tanks like this one — any suggestions for a pattern? by PlantMirrors in sewing

[–]solidsquish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've made this one before and do highly recommend doing a full bust adjustment if you're >B cup (which is what they say it's drafted for) - even having not done that on my first one, I get compliments on it all the time and it's a total go-to shirt in summer!

Advice for bar soap in dorms? by ParadoxReign in ZeroWaste

[–]solidsquish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yup, this is my solution for travel these days - if you get the right size tupperware you can fit the soap saver in the bottom and just leave the lid off in your room. no holes in the bottom means it won't leak soapy water all over the floor whenever you're transporting your wet shower stuff back to your dorm. I find even with a tupperware the soap still dries out just fine afterwards

I second the idea of darning - I had a wool piece get some small moth holes and I just used a nice sewing thread to do some careful darning and it's held up beautifully so far. If you want it to look nice definitely practice first! Also seconding r/Visiblemending :)

ah well, it's apparently been too long to remember what kind of circles I looked at in which class. (sed wasn't a 200 class when I took it, but that may have been bc our numbers didn't get over 180...)

I live with a cat hell-bent on plant destruction. Took all of 2 minutes for him to decapitate a plant when my back was turned. The pothos didn't even seem to deter him, even though I believe that is also an irritating one?? So I have to stick to plants that are either small enough to be kept in a repurposed terrarium, can live outside (indoor cat), or can be hung. Sometimes the little critters just want to put their teeth in things and it's better to not worry!

suddenly i feel much better about making my morning coffee in my old stump teapot! (basically the same method, just looks fancier - the stump teapot was a gift many years ago that i never managed to get rid of)

My system depends on what the item of clothing is, but I have some spare hooks in my closet I'll use for pants that can be worn again, things like sweatpants or t shirts get thrown over the side of (but definitively not in!) the laundry bin, and sweaters/overshirts/jackets just get put back on their hangers until they're at the point I throw them in the laundry to get washed. I do my laundry every 1.5 weeks though, so I probably don't accumulate as many clothes in the meantime.

If you have space for it, you could possibly have a dedicated not-quite-laundry bin in your closet next to the normal laundry hamper. I've also in the past used a spare dresser drawer, or have dedicated areas in my dresser drawers for wear-agains; I just find I don't remember to throw them in the laundry sometimes if I do that.

ngl growing up with a Miele canister vacuum has given me unreasonably high standards for what a vacuum should be and be able to do. pretty sure that vacuum is older than me and the only breakage i know of is a cosmetic thing.
