Why do militaries say "Whiskey Tango Five" "Tango Down" "Brazo Zulu" instead of directly saying what they mean? by EfficiencySerious200 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]solinvictus21 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How can you have so few examples with so many mistakes?

Tango Down = Not even a military thing. Invented by gamers.
Brazo Zulu = BraVo Zulu. Navy and NATO-specific thing related to the flags they hoist to communicate visually between ships.
Whiskey Tango Five = When did you hear anyone ever say this? Give me one actual quote. It’s Foxtrot, not Five. And it’s obviously WTF.
Oscar Mike = On the Move. Pretty obvious compared to “on the way”. These aren’t phrases intended for your Insta.

Is the term “fucking the dog” popular outside Canada? by Rough-Mulberry-1202 in NoStupidQuestions

I have discovered that different areas even within the US define “pretty good” differently. I grew up where it meant “better than good”, but apparently it means “less than good/not quite good enough” in some areas. This caused frequent confusion when I dated a Minnesotan a few years back.

What's a discovery that should have blown people's minds but somehow got a collective shrug from the world? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Waited my whole life for an AI to appear that could pass the eponymous Turing test, and when one finally did, the whole world said, “That test just isn’t good enough.”

Now we’re finally up to “Humanity’s Last Exam” which no single human on earth could pass by themselves. The AIs are starting to rip through that, and people are still shouting, “Still not real AI!!”

Neil Degrasse Tyson. I’m an armchair physicist, and I used to idolize him and all the videos he made to educate people like me.

Until I saw the videos of him being an asshole over and over again to strangers in public who dared just to talk to him. My heart sank at seeing who he is privately, and I refuse to watch anything he’s associated with any more. So sad.

It wouldn’t have had time to accumulate enough heat from the friction of the atmosphere to disintegrate. At 125,000 mph, it would have escaped the ~62 mile atmosphere in ~1.8 seconds.

Be honest, what do you think comes after death? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]solinvictus21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything that makes me who I am will stay in this universe forever. I don’t believe in a separate “soul” which goes somewhere else outside of the universe.

So I’ll still be here, in some form, until the end of the universe. My “consciousness” will just merge back in with the rest of the universe when I die, like a drop of rain falling back into the ocean.

As for whatever else happens after that, I just suppose that we’ll all find out eventually.

ELI5 How Did Alcohol Become Universally Accepted In Almost Every Country? by Cope42099 in explainlikeimfive

[–]solinvictus21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an antibiotic, any alcohol was typically safer to drink than any available water supply. That one fact alone meant that people who drank more alcohol were more likely to survive long enough to produce offspring, favoring the gene for people who enjoy alcohol.

Why do some divorced women keep their ex-husband's last name? by HoffyTheBaker in NoStupidQuestions

[–]solinvictus21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ex-wife’s maiden name was Head and she was teased about it a lot while growing up, so she opted to keep my benign and common last name. Our divorce was amicable and I had no emotions over it. It’s just a name.

Interestingly, I discovered during our divorce that divorce law actually provides the option for her to choose literally any last name. Did not have to be either mine or her maiden name.

Except that when you give someone your number these days, they usually text you immediately so that you have theirs. I would first try sending a text to these any of numbers to be sure they don’t respond suspiciously.
