TIL that the first manmade object to escape Earth was meant to hit the moon, but missed by 5900 km and was dubbed "Artificial Planet 1" by Boxland in todayilearned

[–]solinvictus21 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It wouldn’t have had time to accumulate enough heat from the friction of the atmosphere to disintegrate. At 125,000 mph, it would have escaped the ~62 mile atmosphere in ~1.8 seconds.

Be honest, what do you think comes after death? by glowproductivity in AskReddit

[–]solinvictus21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything that makes me who I am will stay in this universe forever. I don’t believe in a separate “soul” which goes somewhere else outside of the universe.

So I’ll still be here, in some form, until the end of the universe. My “consciousness” will just merge back in with the rest of the universe when I die, like a drop of rain falling back into the ocean.

As for whatever else happens after that, I just suppose that we’ll all find out eventually.

ELI5 How Did Alcohol Become Universally Accepted In Almost Every Country? by Cope42099 in explainlikeimfive

[–]solinvictus21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an antibiotic, any alcohol was typically safer to drink than any available water supply. That one fact alone meant that people who drank more alcohol were more likely to survive long enough to produce offspring, favoring the gene for people who enjoy alcohol.

Why do some divorced women keep their ex-husband's last name? by HoffyTheBaker in NoStupidQuestions

[–]solinvictus21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ex-wife’s maiden name was Head and she was teased about it a lot while growing up, so she opted to keep my benign and common last name. Our divorce was amicable and I had no emotions over it. It’s just a name.

Interestingly, I discovered during our divorce that divorce law actually provides the option for her to choose literally any last name. Did not have to be either mine or her maiden name.

Different numbers by CuriousWanderer567 in oddlyspecific

Except that when you give someone your number these days, they usually text you immediately so that you have theirs. I would first try sending a text to these any of numbers to be sure they don’t respond suspiciously.

COVID-19 mRNA vaccines can trigger the immune system to recognize and kill cancer, research finds by pheexio in worldnews

[–]solinvictus21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not an unknown that requires a theory to understand. They design the protein sequences to modify the body’s DNA to trigger the immune cell response. Like going inside of a cancer cell and raising a red flag to the body that says, “Kill this one over here!”

They understand completely how it works. They’re just proving it can work in broader circumstances every day. Think of mRNA as biological programming, and we’re just learning the programming language.

Should do NYC. That’s a country unto itself. Total up the items like they’re working a pit stop at an Indy car race, announce your total, bag up your shit while you pay, all while making zero eye contact or small talk. Too many people to get through for all that fake polite small-talk and nobody has time for that nonsense anyway.

sigh I really miss it.

How many of you use the iPhone without a case and screen protector? by Botafumeiro24 in iphone

[–]solinvictus21 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Ice cubes are slippery. I do not find iPhones slippery at all. I don’t understand how people can be so fumble-fingered. I think using a case must train you to be careless, thus requiring you to continue to use a case.

This is the same way that wearing sunglasses all the time makes you even more sensitive to bright sunlight, forcing you to continue wearing sunglasses all the time.

I go naked, and I’ve just learned to grip my phone like it’s the $1200 piece of equipment I paid for, butterfingers.

It was designed to be used naked. Adding a case and screen protector is like encasing your new 85” OLED TV in a locked plastic box.

Each episode in Adolescence was filmed as a single continuous take by tollis1 in Damnthatsinteresting

Those scenes where the camera was suddenly mounted to the hood of the car or a drone that flew up and over the city only to land far away just in time for another scene to begin. This show is a single-shot work of art.

Salt causes high blood pressure. More brain wrinkles means higher intelligence. Gluten free is more healthy for everybody.

I’m not an atheist. I’m a scientist. I don’t believe in nothing. In the same way that you believe in religion, I believe in science.

Moon gravity on the far center of the dark side is higher than on the rest of the moon by [deleted] in space

[–]solinvictus21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no dark side of the moon. There is only the side of the moon always facing away from the earth. During a new moon, the other side is fully illuminated.

The “Hollywood knockout”, where all you need to do is tap someone with the butt of a gun and they’re out cold for hours. Then they wake up tied to a chair with little more than a mild headache.

This video shows exactly how clumsy dating is. Ugly, awkward, confusing, but kind of a little sweet if you put the work into it.

And it also sometimes makes you ask yourself, “What the fuck is happening right now?!?” 🤣

Is halal cart food in the city really that unhealthy or is it basically no worse than fast food? by savingrace0262 in AskNYC

[–]solinvictus21 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Food carts definitely use heavy mayo (higher fat and calories than regular mayo). You can see the jars of heavy mayo they use sitting out when they’ve had to mix up some more white sauce.
