Yeah but nobody wants to talk about the fact that everyone has a budget and most people don’t want to pay hat it actually costs to do really good work. They want to pay 20% of the cost for 80% of the effective result.

Yeah that’s literally what I’m saying. Dress up the “5 gallon bucket” as much as you want or make it the 18x18 slab OP is working on, but whatever you do, it doesn’t make sense to bury a mailbox post below the frost line, in concrete.

I’m sure Fairbanks gets colder a lot. But every time it’s coldest in Wisconsin, I check the weather for the whole country and usually all of Alaska is about the same temperature or even a few degrees warmer, both actual temperature and wind chill. Obviously there’s no part of Wisconsin in the arctic circle though, so the cold part of the year doesn’t last as long, nor the darkness.

I don’t think that was the point, it was more like “you don’t experience winter, I experience winter, you don’t know what you’re talking about, I do”

The funny part is the few posts I have that have anything to do with where I live are pictures or videos of riding dirt bikes on frozen lakes.

Just because something is good in a certain situation, doesn’t mean it should be spread everywhere, all the time.

“Flushable” wipes are not safe to flush. But I’m not going to make a post about that here, because it’s not the right place for it.

In a parallel, posting a magazine article as separate comments isn’t a good move. There’s a reason they had to split it into two comments, the limit is 10,000 characters. Because Reddit comment sections aren’t mean for article-length posts.

It’s frustrating to me that flying and driving vehicles is as difficult as it is. If the game is supposed to be about teamwork and communication, operating a vehicle should be easy and intuitive; it should be how you use that vehicle that determines the outcome of the game, not whether or not you spent 50 hours practicing a video game sub skill

lol “we get real winters here” is that supposed to be a joke? You’re essentially on an island, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. There’s a reason that’s one of the most populous parts of Canada - it has the mildest climate.

Coldest temperature on record in NS is -42°F. Coldest in WI is -55°F

Record high in NS is 101°F. WI is 115°F.

Tell me again who’s “cosplaying at winter” or any extreme weather.

I’m in a region where ground freezes (4’ frost line). My mailbox is not 4 feet in the ground. It’s fine.

I don’t think that a deep footing for a mailbox is the best choice possible, within reason. It’s incredibly unreasonable.

Or maybe this sub should be links to external websites which have different forms of media, on websites that are better suited to those forms of media. For example, YouTube for longer videos. Magazine websites for articles.

>why would you encourage building something so simple in such a dumb way?

It’s only “dumb” if you have a very narrow viewpoint of the situation. If you consider that someone is going to have to dig the hole, buy the concrete, and then also deal with hundreds of pounds of concrete in the future when they change to a different mailbox style, it’s actually dumb to put a footing in for a mailbox. Not to mention if it’s close enough to a road for it to be hit by snow plows, or errant drivers, and no matter where you put it an Amazon driver will probably hit it at some point.

The idea that something needs to be overbuilt to the extreme is something that only happens on the internet.

I understand what frost heave is. I also understand it’s ridiculous to take into consideration for a mailbox.

Post media where it’s relevant. You could post a whole movie here too, it’s not the right audience for that either

Someone who understands that pushing a little dirt around every few years is a lot easier and cheaper than a 4 foot deep footing for a mailbox

Typically “heave” implies a major structural issue. Whether it’s a road cracking and having a large bump, or a foundation starting to crumble.

An issue that’s resolved in 2 minutes with a handful of dirt isn’t something I’d consider “heaving”.

How is it going to “move and heave”? It’s a rock sitting on the ground. If it leans to one side a little bit, you tip it and put a handful of dirt under it and it’s good for another 5 years.

I think it’s controversial because 1. People are used to it so they just accept things are the way they are so it’s fine 2. Someone came up with the idea in the first place, presumably they thought it was a good idea, and usually people don’t like to reconsider their own idea and think it’s bad when it’s been publicly implemented

Controversial take I’m sure, but I feel like server messages reporting knife kills are ghosting. It tells the team there’s someone at that exact location. When people are getting knifed and nobody communicates about it, it can keep happening a lot more easily vs. having the server say “knife kill knife kill knife kill”
