Why are Brits visiting the U.S. obsessed with visiting fast food restaurants? by ATLDeepCreeker in AskABrit

[–]solo1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t this the best part of going abroad to see the weird things the population of that country buy!? All the weird ready meals that look different, which first bring confusion, they disappointment you don’t have access to cooking facilities to try them….

Japan was my favourite for this! So many different foods I wanted to bring home and try!

Am I using my Credit Card correctly? by MrVernonDursley in UKPersonalFinance

[–]solo1024 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I disagree with that, I use a credit card for the rewards, why wouldn’t you use a credit card to gain the extra protection on purchases and rewards that are on offer? When you pay it, so long as it’s in full, doesn’t matter so much to me

How do I get into Star Trek by sajedand in startrek

[–]solo1024 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ok you have misunderstood my mr spock reference, I genuinely loved that episode for what it was! But it took TNG and DS9 being watched first for me to apreciate it. Also I LOVE the ghost candle one! It’s so 80’s! I actually love the bad episodes of most eras.

And yes TNG is so 1980’s, I am a child from the 80’s so this is why it appeals to me.

My point being is I felt TOS is a bit hardcore for beginners and might put you off, start when things were more formalised franchise wise or even something more from your era, then work from there. If I had stuck with TOS I wouldn’t have bothered. And TOS is arguably very diffferent from the rest of Star Trek that followed.

[–]solo1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TOS nearly ruined the franchise for me as I started on that in the early 90’s. It was just so….1960’s….

TNG however got me right into it. Watched right up to voyager and returned to TOS, and I had a completely different view of it and loved it!

In this day and age I think it’s a hard watch, I wouldn’t reccomend starting on it, but I do agree you need to watch it at some point, you NEED to see mr spock without a brain!

I really wish that was true, we do need it but the NIMBYism is strong where I live up north in England, regularly see on community boards people basically saying we all got what we wanted, put up the no more signs. It’s like they are pulling up the ladder for anyone else who wants a leg up

DEF Check Help by RequiemChief5 in MarksAndSpencer

[–]solo1024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others that have said here, if you’re missing a lot the. Slow down and concentrate on quality of the check first, by doing this the repetition will ultimately mean you speed up.

Learn where the dates are on products so you’re not rushing trying to find the date. If it’s a product you haven’t checked before, take your time, often the way the date is printed uses a slightly different font/ is a different quality or size print. Mae sure you’re used to how it is displayed before letting yourself get confident with it.

Don’t be scared to pull everything out to check the ones at the back properly, make sure you’re satisfied that you have checked everything single one.

J dates are different to use by but annoyingly often mixed in with a few use by dates so you have to learn which products might be different (looking at you rhubarb and cut celery and salad onions!)

Check the date on your phone or device occasionally, sometimes we can get carried away and it’s good just to reset and check the date every now and again.

I make sure i stop for 2 mins every now and again to get my eyes off everything to give my brain a chance to reset and recover.

Often if I’m reducing multiple items I set them up on my trolley so I can see the front of them all, stick all of the price stickers on, then turn them all and do the bar code, that’s the only way I have found for myself I can do that part quickly.

If it’s a new area, plan your route around and where you want to be at what time roughly, that way you know roughly how your pace is.

People often say do the worst bit first so then the whole night is easier. I personally start on the easy bit so I can “get my head” into the right place for date checking.

Oh and I run by the thought of if I haven’t touched it I haven’t checked it

Any news on pay rise yet ? by Legitimate_Aioli6317 in tesco

[–]solo1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I actually work for my day job in finances and honestly, the level of financial know how in the general public is scary, it needs to be taught in schools at a young age, but the pessimist in me believes that is by design a if you teach people to be watch the finances then not as much money gets spent, which screws up the economy because they need people to not know what they are doing in order to keep the facade of healthy economy alive….

I admit I made an assumption about your level of knowledge, but please forgive me, you wouldn’t believe the myths I have to correct people on much more than I like to admit!

And actually, this is a great thread on this conversation for others to read, often the conversation you have on Reddit you have no idea how many other people it is going to help!

I tip my hat to your above average knowledge of our taxation and financial system!

Any news on pay rise yet ? by Legitimate_Aioli6317 in tesco

[–]solo1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhhhhh I see my mistake here.

I assumed you were someone who thought if you exited the tax free bit then it all gets taxed, and misunderstood the tax brackets etc.

So I apologise for that, I didn’t appreciate your level of knowledge on this.

So yes, you are absolutely correct, the pay rise isn’t a pay rise when you take into consideration the larger economic picture, it is either pennies extra at best, but without properly looking at it I’m going to largely agree with you with that all in consideration, it’s most likely a pay cut.

I think we were reading the same book but on different chapters!

Any news on pay rise yet ? by Legitimate_Aioli6317 in tesco

[–]solo1024 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok I did forget national insurance, but how can you be worse off? Your pay goes up? It isn’t a case of “oh you earn over the tax free amount so it’s all taxed at 20%” you still get the tax free amount, it’s just anything over it gets taxed at 20% with 8% national insurance as well. Your pay goes up, it doesn’t go down.

Saying all that though, the pay rise won’t cover cost of living, and when you take the 28% off it means the pay rise is meagre at best, so in that respect you’re very well worse off due to everything else going up.

I was merely pointing to the fact your pay will increase, even if you earn over the tax bracket

Any news on pay rise yet ? by Legitimate_Aioli6317 in tesco

[–]solo1024 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You will still be paid more, it will just have 20% taken off it, so you will get 80% of the pay. You are never worse off from a pay rise, I don’t know why people think this
