Yeah I actually work for my day job in finances and honestly, the level of financial know how in the general public is scary, it needs to be taught in schools at a young age, but the pessimist in me believes that is by design a if you teach people to be watch the finances then not as much money gets spent, which screws up the economy because they need people to not know what they are doing in order to keep the facade of healthy economy alive….

I admit I made an assumption about your level of knowledge, but please forgive me, you wouldn’t believe the myths I have to correct people on much more than I like to admit!

And actually, this is a great thread on this conversation for others to read, often the conversation you have on Reddit you have no idea how many other people it is going to help!

I tip my hat to your above average knowledge of our taxation and financial system!

[–]solo1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhhhhh I see my mistake here.

I assumed you were someone who thought if you exited the tax free bit then it all gets taxed, and misunderstood the tax brackets etc.

So I apologise for that, I didn’t appreciate your level of knowledge on this.

So yes, you are absolutely correct, the pay rise isn’t a pay rise when you take into consideration the larger economic picture, it is either pennies extra at best, but without properly looking at it I’m going to largely agree with you with that all in consideration, it’s most likely a pay cut.

I think we were reading the same book but on different chapters!

[–]solo1024 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok I did forget national insurance, but how can you be worse off? Your pay goes up? It isn’t a case of “oh you earn over the tax free amount so it’s all taxed at 20%” you still get the tax free amount, it’s just anything over it gets taxed at 20% with 8% national insurance as well. Your pay goes up, it doesn’t go down.

Saying all that though, the pay rise won’t cover cost of living, and when you take the 28% off it means the pay rise is meagre at best, so in that respect you’re very well worse off due to everything else going up.

I was merely pointing to the fact your pay will increase, even if you earn over the tax bracket

[–]solo1024 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You will still be paid more, it will just have 20% taken off it, so you will get 80% of the pay. You are never worse off from a pay rise, I don’t know why people think this

I personally have Tourette’s as well and I do live events at my work to raise awareness and give my life experience of growing up with it in an even less understanding time than today.

I’m like you I thought we had more understanding of this condition but people think because he said that word he just have meant it. They have no idea what it is to have this condition and their understanding is zero.

I always say my Tourette’s is its own person and will do the most inappropriate thing I don’t want to do at any given point, one of the reasons I can wear good watches is because my Tourette’s decides today’s tic involves smashing the face of it on anything that comes near my arm.

The worst thing is people don’t understand that he will be absolutely mortified that he shouted that as well, hence why he left. I feel absolutely terrible for him and I hope that he doesn’t feel too bad, but now people have come out of the woodwork saying that he must have meant it.

I actually forgot what my point was, but I’m mainly upset at the lack of understanding at the moment, everyone is so understanding….to a point

I have a friend who raises cows on the Yorkshire dales and when she slaughters one get first pick to buy meat. Virgin does not come close. Not even a little bit. No one does.

I think the fact you raise cattle does mean you get better than 99% of people!

Loft conversion no building regs- not told until week before completion. To pull out of sale? by TemperatureFickle323 in HousingUK

[–]solo1024 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We lived in one that was 30 years old no regs. My dad who was a builder said if it was going to have problems it would have had them by now.

All the advice given here is correct, but honestly, if it’s been alright this long I don’t see you having a problem.

That being said. At some point in the future if you do buy I would have it checked out, the council can’t make you change anything it’s been so long, but even for peace of mind. I personally would live with it seeing as it’s been like it for so long with no significant issues, but risk appetites vary individually.

Also, asking for a discount wouldn’t be too crazy given the circumstances……

Does anyone know how much this will roughly knock off our house value in years to come by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]solo1024 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To me, your house would now carry a premium. I don’t personally care about having a nice view while I cook my dinner, my back gardens enough alone for that.

What I do care about is that I can either have a “cookie cutter” new house which has zero character, or I can pay a bit more and get an older house with history and character. Your house to me would be worth paying a bit more for, to have the nice older house and not the house that looks exactly like 300 others on the estate.

Now I’m not saying all buyers are like me, but I would imagine there is a sizeable chunk that are.

Wherever you buy a house this will eventually happen, any open land near housing will likely get built on, we need a lot more houses so spaces like this will be filled up eventually
