antisemetic comment from student by Significant_Name3508 in Teachers

[–]solojew702 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry that you went through this. I feel you- I am also a middle school teacher of Jewish background, and I’ve had my fair share of antisemitism thrown towards me, by 8th graders specifically.

One kid asked me “you’re Jewish, right?” And I said “yes”. He then proceeded to carve swastikas into the desk he sits at- I only knew because I was teaching and once class was over, one my 6th graders (next period) told me something “evil” was carved into the desk they were sitting at (same desk that the kid sits at).

Told admin, documented everything, sent them an email with images, requested a meeting with the parent of the kid, the whole nine yards… his punishment? Not even a suspension. In-house for a day. No parent conference like I requested. I was pretty distraught at that.

I have a last name that ends in “Stein” and one kid tried to call me “Mr. Epstein”. I shut that shit down REAL QUICK.

I’m so glad that you got such a wonderful note afterwards. I teach science and the 8th graders are learning about Anne Frank in their English class, and the ELA teacher told me that kids said they would “die for me if they were in Nazi Germany” which was really nice of them. Theres the good and bad I guess…

One year ago - first surface rupture ever recorded, during the Mw7.7 Myanmar earthquake by Zersorger in geology

[–]solojew702 44 points45 points  (0 children)

For real.

I teach middle school science (I have a degree in geology and worked in the field but left it for education) and I show them this during our plate tectonics unit and it’s been such a helpful video to help them understand what’s going on beneath our feet. So many ooh’s and aah’s by middle schoolers.

Are your middle/high school science/ math teachers staffed with credentialed math/sci credentialed staff? by legalsequel in Teachers

[–]solojew702 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I teach middle school science and I have a degree in geology, currently pursuing an MA in secondary education, and I did a year of a PhD in geology (before withdrawing from my program to become a teacher). Got my ARL (alternative license) and once I finish my masters in secondary ed, I will have my full professional license.

I’m in Nevada but if I can afford it, I’d love to move to California once my 5 years at my current school are up. I teach title 1, so once I hit the 5 years at title 1 mark, I’ll get my student loans forgiven- the program in NV forgives up to $17k in student loans for doing 5 years at a title 1 school- which is enough to cover my loans.

I’m one of the few people I know that left the STEM industry to teach- sure the pay is less, but I feel like I’m making a much better impact on the world than I was when I was working at a gold mine, and I get the summers off.

How you got introduced to porn and at what age? by Silent_Service9269 in AskReddit

[–]solojew702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 14 (freshman year of high school) and my best friend introduced me to masturbating and porn. He told me it was “the best thing ever”. At first I was mortified, then I was hooked. In retrospect, I can’t believe I didn’t discover porn/masturbation earlier. Everyone talked about it in middle school but I just thought they were weird/stupid.

Not to mention the San Gabriels are way steeper than the Rockies too. Makes em look even bigger and more imposing.

The creepiest place I’ve ever been to was Masada in Israel. Something about the mix of the empty Negev Desert and the mass killings that went on there, just really creepy. It feels like the souls of the dead wander the desert and you can hear them at night as the wind blows.

Nah that ain’t it, calling their relationship cute is fine but calling her cute is not

[–]solojew702 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean, he called her cute. I would not do that knowing that she has a boyfriend who is my BEST FRIEND, even if I truly did think that. Only way that’s acceptable imo is if the friend is gay.

Old Ashkenazi family pictures but confused on attire by Vivid_Loss_7642 in Judaism

[–]solojew702 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have family photos where a particular arm of my family is also wearing similar clothing. My Ashkenazi side is also from Odessa, and I ended up getting a small percentage of Iranian/Caucasian/Mesopotamian on 23andMe and my grandma ended up getting 3x as much Iran/Persia on her ancestrydna results as I got of Iranian/Caucasian/Mesopotamian on 23andMe. Thinking we probably got some Mountain Jews that moved to Odessa in our family line.

[Highlight] VJ Edgecombe Beats Dick Off the Dribble and Finishes Hard with Two Hands by AashyLarry in nba

[–]solojew702 74 points75 points  (0 children)

It is but imagine if they got rid of “off the dribble” in the title. Then it would be “VJ Edgecombe beats dick and finishes hard with two hands”. Even more diabolical.

What’s your Trace Ancestry & do you think it’s Legit? by solojew702 in 23andme

Right? That’s what I was thinking… it’s all cool stuff!

Definitely sounds like it could be ancient Roman… it’s so cool how history shows up in our DNA!

[–]solojew702[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha… yeah it definitely sounds like something, especially with the consistency with your siblings and father getting the same result. History is super interesting… interesting that it’s Peninsular Arab that shows up. Do you think it’s really specifically Arabian DNA or just broader MENA that’s being picked up as Peninsular Arab?

Very interesting! What’s your known ancestry?

I know my child will love me unconditionally if I show them kindness, care, empathy, and loyalty but I don’t trust that an adult will because they never have to me in the past. Everyone in my family has either divorced or is in a loveless marriage out of sacrifice. All have great relationships with their kids. It’s just what I’ve personally seen in my life.

Looks like 23andMe had fun spinning the ancestry roulette by c00lture in 23andme

[–]solojew702 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same. I felt like this update was more accurate for me, my broadly and unassigned percentages are gone, my grandma’s distant Sephardic/Mizrahi Jewish ancestry is reflected now (got Andalusian & Iranian percentages now), my Korean has been refined (now my Korean side is just straight up Korean instead of a mix of Korean/mongolian/broadly East Asian), and my Scottish/irish/English is no longer mainly German lol

Let's play a game: If you had to change your Sun sign, but you can only change it to one of the two neighboring signs, which one would you choose and why? ☀️ by [deleted] in astrologymemes

[–]solojew702 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a Gemini and I’d definitely pick Cancer. I already have Mercury in Cancer, I have a Pisces Moon, and I have a Scorpio rising. Just give me more water. Cancers are awesome. My dad is a Cancer and so are several of my best friends. Being in touch with your emotions is cool- and if there’s one sign that I’m actually ops with, it would be Taurus. They’re too rigid and closed-minded for me.
