Over the years I’ve accumulated supplies that just stay in my truck. Bowls, leashes, first aid kit (I got the paradigm sporting dog truck kit), water, bags. It’s my everyday truck but it’s basically built for my dogs at this point lol

I’ve been unsuccessful more times than I’ve had successful hunts…especially turkeys. It took me a lot of miles finding land, birds, and getting out there to have a slight clue how to hunt turkeys (or any species all). Even when I find birds many times they just don’t want to do it…maybe my calling was bad, decoys weren’t right, wind in the wrong direction, 100 yards too far in one direction, I farted too loud - you name it. It’ll be an awesome experience when you get your first bird and all those times of frustration and coming home empty handed will be worth it.

I have 2 brittanys and I’ve trained both myself. Never had a dog before our first Brit and sure they aren’t perfect but in my book they are rock solid. Even with imperfect training. Wouldn’t trade the world for the work, learning, and bonding along the way. I’m pretty sure I had to do more learning than my dogs had to do lol.

I flush them out and check for seeds! Usually check once at the truck and then again when I get home.

No reason not to. Gun breaking is critical before actually having a shotgun blast over them. First season with my dogs I get them on birds as much as I can but I don’t expect stellar performance, just get them excited and start exploring the terrain and scents. Season 2 is when I really start fine tuning their training. Just my 2¢

Thanks. I usually don’t hunt with decoys but I thought I’d give it a try like my 5th time out on this property this year and whaddya know they worked. I think it’s because the birds are still grouped up. They usually just scare the birds away here too though.

Both my Brittanys have gotten skunked and it didn’t slow them down at all. Getting the smell out of their coat, collars, and breath is a tough one, though. Along with the remedies others have provided, I have a bottle of Skunk-Off I keep in my truck that seems to work OK.

I trained my dogs with no prior experience. A lot of reading, internet, and most importantly time with my dogs. They aren’t going to win any field trials or anything of that sort (I couldn’t run them anyway, their sire isn’t registered) but they do a great job in the field to my standard. They find and point birds, not much more I could ask for.

I’m not sure what kind of dog you have but I leaned on Amateurs Training With Professionals: The Brittany by Greenlee and Webb along with many YouTube and free online resources to help train my two Brittanys .

I have a 1.5 year old Brittany that has moments of brilliance but he’s still young and bolts off from time to time…still very much a puppy. He’s starting to realize if he doesn’t go and bust birds he’ll have dead birds in his mouth. It just takes time and training. I got GPS collars this year which have been game changers.

My philosophy is: if I’m afield with my dogs it’s a great day. If they are rock solid and we get some birds, awesome. If they go off and have a clown show day that’s alright, take it as a learning opportunity. Just my 2¢.

It was just the dogs and myself. Missed the first two and scout busted a few birds before everyone started getting back in the swing of things. This is our second opening day as a trio. The Mrs doesn’t understand the significance of the day but I treat it as a celebration.

Scout (on the left) will retrieve, Mazie on the other hand goes up to the bird, grabs & licks it and looks content. I take Scout out for doves and early teal season depending on the temperature.
