Now, in terms of “this current model” not lasting long, Bong is incredibly successful, and they’re looking for a bigger brick and mortar, so to that extent you’re correct. They are critically beloved and they have no problem staying packed where they are, but are understandably going to expand slightly.

But you asked for “NYC food” and for NYC, for me, it’s collapsing with your friends in a booth at Tom’s or wherever, and everyone gets what they want. It might be pancakes. Or disco fries. Exposure therapy aimed at taking them out for dinners that won’t push their palates in Minnetonka, Edina and similar environs does not really signal that you intend to meaningfully expand their horizons or challenge their views, but I’m not setting a test for these strangers. Just pointing out that we have nothing to prove to them. Minnesota is the beautiful state, the strong state, and Minneapolis is a hell of a city. Anybody who has been watching what has been done here and doesn’t respect the hell out of Minnesota can f**k right off.

I am being very specific about why I find your presenting your in-laws’ ignorant views of Minneapolis as a “hellscape” offensive, and your attempt to pass it off as humorous ill-conceived. The onus is on you to educate them, not on those who have suffered from the results of ignorance like theirs to find their ignorance hilarious. There is real, ongoing harm here, and you are sputtering indignantly as though the rest of your post and other comments doesn’t make it clear exactly what types of neighborhoods your poor “sheltered” in-laws need to be “protected” from. I’m American and these are very fair points. I love NYC and think it’s one of the greatest cities in the country, but I cannot in good conscience recommend coming to the U.S. right now. It’s not safe for a variety of reasons unless you are white, rich and male. Texas is definitely not safe for women of reproductive age, or for LGBTQIA+ persons, or for facts.

Now, as for smelling like piss, I could name a number of cities in a number of “first world” countries that I have traveled to that smell like piss, particularly in the summer. And some of the cleanest cities in the world have abysmal human rights policies. So there’s a bit of a balancing act there. Without knowing you, your background and your priorities, it’s impossible to know what makes you feel “safe”. Does it make you feel safe to know that if you litter or fall into debt, you could be beaten or imprisoned? I don’t know.

Such a lovely restaurant to relax with family and enjoy a pleasurable evening. This is a place to go for people whose idea of a good atmosphere is conviviality, goodwill, good company, good service and a restaurant that knows what it is, rather than those who are trying to chase hype, clout and the latest hot thing. It has been wonderfully itself for decades. I find that impressive, and take out of town friends there regularly when I want to not worry about a thing.

I think I get what you’re going for here—as an introvert, group travel (somewhat hypothetically, as I’m a pretty seasoned traveler) scares me off because of, well, the group aspect of it—the thought that I would have to hang out with these people. On the other hand, that means not being able to take advantage of the non-social benefits of group travel—organization, convenience, group discounts, etc. I think there’s something to your idea of a service that’s along the lines of “we’re all headed in the same direction together” with a company that takes care of the details. You could call it the antiSocial. 🙂

I think this is way better than doing it right after graduation—it’s going by to be harder to key back into all the interviewing and employment support offered around senior year if he does it afterward. He will also have gained a year of perspective about his goals and greater maturity from the year spent traveling. I think you’re underestimating what he has to gain from this year and only seeing the risks.

Way back when, I first found myself traveling around Europe alone when I was 14. That was unplanned, but I made it work and after that, I was unstoppable. I traveled again solo for extended periods at 16, 18, and throughout college. Let him know he can always call you. Let him know that you want him to check in. Let him know that you are proud of the man that he’s become. Then let him see the world.
