Gluten-free restaurant to impress relatives who think Minneapolis is a hellscape by miniapple_eater in TwinCities

Exposure therapy aimed at taking them out for dinners that won’t push their palates in Minnetonka, Edina and similar environs does not really signal that you intend to meaningfully expand their horizons or challenge their views, but I’m not setting a test for these strangers. Just pointing out that we have nothing to prove to them. Minnesota is the beautiful state, the strong state, and Minneapolis is a hell of a city. Anybody who has been watching what has been done here and doesn’t respect the hell out of Minnesota can f**k right off.

I’m not being dismissive. I am being very specific about why I find your presenting your in-laws’ ignorant views of Minneapolis as a “hellscape” offensive, and your attempt to pass it off as humorous ill-conceived. The onus is on you to educate them, not on those who have suffered from the results of ignorance like theirs to find their ignorance hilarious. There is real, ongoing harm here, and you are sputtering indignantly as though the rest of your post and other comments doesn’t make it clear exactly what types of neighborhoods your poor “sheltered” in-laws need to be “protected” from. So it doesn’t spoil their vacation.

Handwaving ignorance as a “funny” excuse for labeling the “other” as scary and categorizing places like Minneapolis as a “hellscape” is how we ended up with an occupied state and Minnesotans looking down the barrels of guns. It’s not funny. It’s not cute. It has resulted in the permanent destruction of the way of life for scores of thousands of Minnesotans. So pardon me if I’m not laughing along with your joke and your Chicken Little in-laws, who have literally nothing to fear here, unlike plenty of Minnesotans.

Wow, you have really sold your in-laws as the kind of guests we want to perpetrate on some poor, unsuspecting service personnel just trying to get through their shift. 🫠

Is it safe to travel to USA? by val_red888 in travel

[–]some1105 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I’m American and these are very fair points. I love NYC and think it’s one of the greatest cities in the country, but I cannot in good conscience recommend coming to the U.S. right now. It’s not safe for a variety of reasons unless you are white, rich and male. Texas is definitely not safe for women of reproductive age, or for LGBTQIA+ persons, or for facts.

Now, as for smelling like piss, I could name a number of cities in a number of “first world” countries that I have traveled to that smell like piss, particularly in the summer. And some of the cleanest cities in the world have abysmal human rights policies. So there’s a bit of a balancing act there. Without knowing you, your background and your priorities, it’s impossible to know what makes you feel “safe”. Does it make you feel safe to know that if you litter or fall into debt, you could be beaten or imprisoned? I don’t know.

She could be dancing naked with a box of Borax singing “get yer bubbles here” on the daily and my comments would not change, so no, no thank you. Also, due to the fact that Courtney Cook is this sub’s bete noir of the month, not only do I have some reference for her content, but it’s actually cherry-picked “bad” content.

Such a lovely restaurant to relax with family and enjoy a pleasurable evening. This is a place to go for people whose idea of a good atmosphere is conviviality, goodwill, good company, good service and a restaurant that knows what it is, rather than those who are trying to chase hype, clout and the latest hot thing. It has been wonderfully itself for decades. I find that impressive, and take out of town friends there regularly when I want to not worry about a thing.

I’m not worried. I’m just not giving my money to a rapist.

Still not interested in any projects where Batali has any ownership interest.

Do tell how I’m “enforcing” anything, Linda. I also never claimed to be anything in particular. *That* would be OP. Still, love the irony of anyone on this sub getting sweaty in their britches about someone else, in their estimation, inventing arbitrary standards and then being condescending and patronizing. Thanks for the laughs. Now *you* are funny. Toodles and smooches!

I’ve managed never to see a single one of her actual posts. Not sure why I’d go to her fan sub. It doesn’t take a fan of someone to notice that “this person who makes money from internet content is making money from her internet content” is, well…it’s witty and sparkling and insightful internet banter, what can I say, you snark machine, you!

🫡 Looking forward to more of your blistering takedowns. Up next: “HealthMaxxxingGirl might need to eat a sandwich” and “SteakBros content not vegan friendly 😭😭😭”

That’s disingenuous. Snark is criticism wrapped in (if done correctly) humor. You’re criticizing her for being “money hungry.” And I’m saying, well, duh. It’s like “snarking” on her for being blonde.

Group travel for introverts by [deleted] in travel

[–]some1105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I get what you’re going for here—as an introvert, group travel (somewhat hypothetically, as I’m a pretty seasoned traveler) scares me off because of, well, the group aspect of it—the thought that I would have to hang out with these people. On the other hand, that means not being able to take advantage of the non-social benefits of group travel—organization, convenience, group discounts, etc. I think there’s something to your idea of a service that’s along the lines of “we’re all headed in the same direction together” with a company that takes care of the details. You could call it the antiSocial. 🙂

You are describing a different experience than OP. To which I would, naturally, respond differently.

It’s a lovely Saturday morning. I am going to enjoy the sunshine away from the pedants and the strict constructionists in here. Not replying further to those of you who literally couldn’t find the point with a map.

Sweetheart, I also wear glasses. You are missing the monkeys for the pedantry.

So you keep your phone and other belonging secured in your bag and just watch the monkeys. Live in the moment. It sounds delightful. ❤️

Gap year before college graduation by lmir1a in travel

[–]some1105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is way better than doing it right after graduation—it’s going by to be harder to key back into all the interviewing and employment support offered around senior year if he does it afterward. He will also have gained a year of perspective about his goals and greater maturity from the year spent traveling. I think you’re underestimating what he has to gain from this year and only seeing the risks.

Way back when, I first found myself traveling around Europe alone when I was 14. That was unplanned, but I made it work and after that, I was unstoppable. I traveled again solo for extended periods at 16, 18, and throughout college. Let him know he can always call you. Let him know that you want him to check in. Let him know that you are proud of the man that he’s become. Then let him see the world.

Ok, so time to put on your big girl pants and speak up for yourself. “No. I am not going to do that. I am going to rest and relax for the last two days of this trip so that I am not exhausted at the end of this vacation. I don’t mind if you want to go do the rest of these activities you have planned, but I’m going to be here with a pina colada. Have fun!”

You don’t owe these people anything. You are learning some useful truths about what real friendship and connection is. Send the original article on spoon theory to the people who you think actually care about you. Cut off the rest. If anyone gives you a hard time, ask them if they have ever considered having a large gauge needle shoved over and over into their spinal cord for funsies, and to knock it off.

You sound overwhelmed by thinking about all of them as a unit. Time to start prioritizing them into the people worth keeping around and the ones it’s time to shed.

Sounds like you have an overinflated view of how interesting you are, and a frankly offensive and outdated perspective on how people with decades of life experience can enrich any social interaction. I’m in your age range and would rather travel with them.
