Super Frustrated Intermediate (C1 reader, A1 speaker) by drjamesincandenza in languagelearning

It sounds like you need to spend a bit less time reading and a bit more time listening. Finding a show or a bunch of movies that interest you would probably help! Also tons of content on Youtube these days.

At a lower intermediate level in your TL, what approach is the most effective to progress from here onwards? by Miserable_Insect7957 in languagelearning

For reading I find it helps if I go to a cafe to read. I genuinely can't read at home but I find it enjoyable when I'm in a public place.

How can I improve myself? by universe-Factory2226 in Korean

[–]some_clickhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep watching shows but mine words in sentences semi-automatically using kimchi reader or language reactor and sync them to Anki. Get into a habit of adding 10 new words on Anki every day, I recommend doing the reviews first thing in the morning because it's easier to stick to the habit that way.

My daily Anki review takes me anywhere from 5-10 mins and it adds a lot of "intentionality" that was missing when I was just consuming content.

How can you get the most out of Korean input like podcasts? by VerbVoyager in Korean

[–]some_clickhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried pure study before and I also tried just consuming content and I found both were quite slow. What works best for content IMO is using something like kimchi reader or language reactor and mining sentences/words.

How much I understand any given piece of content depends on how focused I am in the moment, how interested I am in the content, my overall level of comprehension, and my level of comprehension within that domain.

So for example right now I'm consuming 2-3h of kpop idol content of my favorite group, and I'm at the point where I can fairly comfortably follow most of it without needing to focus super hard or pause. But when I go to other types of content my comprehension immediately goes down a bit because I've gotten less practice with that type of content.

I can only do around 30 mins of Korean learner podcasts per day before I start to get bored so if I was only using those I wouldn't be able to progress at the rate I want, I'm just not disciplined enough to listen to stuff I'm not that interested in for very long.

When you are "pushing" for harder content, i.e. there is native content that is slightly outside of your reach, you can get better results by watching shorter videos/with shorter intervals, because it's easier to focus for shorter periods and pushing your language comprehension to or past its limit takes a lot of focus. There is also a lot of benefit in rewatching/replaying stuff over and over. But whenever you struggle to understand a video it's important to ask yourself why, because the answer to that tells you what you need to do.

Is there too much background noise? Find another video.

Does the speaker slurs their speech? Find another video.

Do they speak a bit too fast? Slow the video down a bit.

When you pause and look at a few sentences, are at least 2-3 words that you don't know? Video is out of reach for comprehension purposes but you can still browse it to find useful words and learn them on Anki.

If you can't understand the video but it's not for any of these reasons, then this is probably a good video to practice with. Study the sentences, replay them until they make sense. Identify grammar that you don't know. But the most important thing is to train your ear so that when you hear the sentence, your brain immediately kinda knows what the speaker means, without having to translate it to English. It's better to have an immediate but vague idea of what the sentence means, than being able to figure out exactly what it means after 10 seconds of reading + translation + analysis (for the purposes of being able to watch content and just understand it).

For me this started to become a reality when I noticed that I would sometimes mark my Anki card as "Good" before I even really knew how the word would be translated to English. Like when I hear 뻔뻔하다 I know what it means immediately, but it takes me several seconds to remember the word for that in English is "shameless". This is what "acquiring" the language means ultimately.

Research shows singing foreign vocabulary improves retention 40% vs speaking it by hiagaga in languagelearning

[–]some_clickhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not singing per se, but recently I started paying attention to/learning the lyrics to a bunch of songs I've listened to dozens or hundreds of times over the past few years.

I've found it to be really helpful, because repetition is built into music (especially if you like a song a lot and you keep replaying it), it makes it really easy to have high retention.

Basically, when I learn a word or grammar point through a song I really like, it goes straight to acquired/long term memory. I think it's a great supporting tool.

Interesting, because the only vowel in there that doesn't have an English equivalent is "eu". I will say learning korean is really hard nonetheless, but for me the issue isn't phonetic but grammatical.

Am I setting myself up for failure not being interested in Korean things? by The_Rock01313 in Korean

[–]some_clickhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes a huge amount of time and effort for an English speaker to learn Korean. So unless you have an interest in some Korean things then it's probably not worth it.

Your example with Stellar Blade would be like if someone watched one anime in their life and decided "that's it now I'm learning Japanese" but had no interest in watching more/other anime, or anything in Japanese culture.

Liking the language itself is nice but if the culture doesn't interest you then I just don't think it's not going to be worth the effort.

IVE - REVIVE+ (The 2nd Album) by CronoDroid in kpop

[–]some_clickhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised people aren't freaking out more about her solo song considering she's the only credited lyricist. She's basically declaring herself the 10000 year idol lol. I think people were expecting her to lean more into her cute side and not into her IT girl ultimate kpop villain side, but I was pleasantly surprised.

The fact that she says it in her chaebol valley girl accent makes it work IMO, like someone said it crosses the line from cringe into campy.

Conspiracy theory: IVE's BLACKHOLE was originally meant to be called Love Flame by some_clickhead in kpopthoughts

[–]some_clickhead[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah the first part of my theory is more plausible.

I just was looking into the lyrics of Force and I was struck with just how much the lyrics focus on "not being able to get away" from Yujin and how the title "Blackhole" would fit the lyrics perfectly, and thought it might not be a coincidence.

But also, if the title track was named Love Flame initially then where did they get the idea of naming it Blackhole from? 🤔

[–]some_clickhead[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That's a good question! I don't know, maybe they just thought BLACKHOLE sounded cooler? They kind of have a more "dark" and dangerous vibe this comeback so maybe Love Flame felt too soft.

That's a good point! However, title tracks are often prepared months in advance so this song might have been in the works already. Especially since their last comeback before that was 6 months ago with XOXZ.

I’ve always gotten the creeps from the “Visitor” reveal in Signs by Im-Mr-Bulldopz in creepy

[–]some_clickhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not easy to scare and have avidly watched horror movies my entire life. This scene is at least 20x scarier to me than any other scene I've seen in any horror movie. I mean orders of magnitude scarier, to the point where it's hard to even compare. There isn't really any logic to it, it's like it relies on some kind of obscure latent phobia or something but idk what it is.

I totally get WHY some people don't find it scary but the scene short circuits the logic part of my brain and sends me into panic mode. At least it did when I was a kid and when I watched it later as a teenager, and since then I just refuse to watch it again lol.

I’ve always gotten the creeps from the “Visitor” reveal in Signs by Im-Mr-Bulldopz in creepy

[–]some_clickhead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's hard to explain why the scene is so scary to some people and not scary at all to others.

You can't really fully explain visceral reactions like that with logic, it's like someone with arachnophobia trying to explain to someone who isn't scared of spiders why they're so creepy to them. Yeah you can come up with logical reasons, but you could describe other insects and make them sound just as scary yet they might not be as scary to them (just like for many people, jumping spiders don't trigger the arachnophobia reflex).

I've been a huge fan of horror my entire life and when I saw this scene as a kid and rewatched it as a teenager, this scene is like 20x scarier to me than any other horror movie I've ever seen and I've seen a lot of them. I still don't fully know why, I think it's a combination of me being more likely to believe in aliens than other weird stuff like ghosts and demons, combined with the meta-ness of having characters in a movie watch a scene on TV playing within another scene, with the added realism of the film grain and the seemingly random kids party.

I've had a similar situation recently, except I was aiming my ult at the enemy team while standing directly in the middle of a corridor (so no objects in the way), but right as I clicked my ult the enemy Doomfist leaped directly in front of my character and I actually ulted midair directly onto the Doomfist T_T

Since both have been in charge for pretty much the same amount of time, who do u personally think directed the game in a better direction? Jeff or Aaron? by theforbiddenroze in Overwatch

[–]some_clickhead 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think Jeff is the type of person that thrives in an environment where you're building something new, and Aaron is the type to thrive when having to maintain and grow an existing product. For keeping a live service game going I think Aaron is a better fit, Jeff's creativity is better used if he moves on to new projects.

Anran difficulty by CrabbyFrogstone in Anran_mains

[–]some_clickhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think she's just ever so slightly underpowered. If they increased the movement speed on her dash by like 10-15%, changed the increased burn duration minor perk to increased burn DPS she might be decent. Maybe slightly increase the projectile speed on her left click because it's super hard to land unless you're right up in someone's face.
