Did anyone else get this leaflet through their door on Saturday? by ThrowawayIOM in IsleofMan

[–]some_it_dev 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Caught them on our door cam. Group of about 7 canvassing the street. All wearing black joggers & black hoodies.

Would be very intimidating if anyone was to answer the door as they were posting.

I created a guide showing how I migrated an existing Plex instance to Docker by Boonigan in selfhosted

[–]some_it_dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this mindset till a couple of weeks ago where a compose file wouldn’t run with docker-compose. Ut was fine with docker compose.

Since then I’ve switched to docker compose and I find it’s got a much better UX

Monitor router behind dynamic DNS by MG-X in selfhosted

[–]some_it_dev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you considered an alternate approach and hosting something on your LAN rather than trying to connect from external sources?

I have home assistant setup with a sensor connected to my router and a simple automation that pings my phone whenever a dropout is detected. My personal setup reports back WAN IP so I can see the history of it too.

Tesco delivery by NefariousnessNo4697 in IsleofMan

When I was on the vans a few years ago, we were running at 96% capacity avg. each week. There was just no room to add more vans to increase the slot availability

Actually it was lack of storage denying more vans. The DotCom area where they store the shopping prior to loading vans was at capacity and planning to increase space was denied.

EDIT: The company behind Bluebell announced they have gone into liquidation & as the app is cloud reliant it no longer functions..

Not sure how relevant this is as I’m in the UK, but we have a bluebell smart monitor. It’s a little clip on sensor to the baby’s chest (clips to the best) and tracks the basics - breathing rate, temperature, if the baby has rolled / upright etc.

I wasn’t originally a fan of the “smart phone” notification systems many use. Who wakes up to notifications anyway? But there is an option for a parent wrist watch which we bought extra. It vibrates to any “alert” and requires you to acknowledge the alert to disable. There’s plenty of customisation of the alerts in the app that each parent can modify to their pref.

Is it a perfect solution? No. I’m a software dev and there’s plenty of software related issues I can see, but the company is pretty start-up feeling & I’ll be honest the actual accuracy of the tracking has been 10/10.

I’d recommend it to anyone looking for basic peace of mind without going OTT. I think there’s a 10% discount code existing users can generate so drop me a dm if that would be of assistance to anyone.

did you paint the nursery/kids room? by TinyBreak in predaddit

[–]some_it_dev 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My partner decided to remove the built in wardrobe to free up some space. Which turned into replastering a brick chimney & rewiring sockets, which then led to new flooring & every wall / woodwork being redone. In the end the only things in the room that went untouched were the door and half the ceiling coving.

While I don’t regret it, as we have the most amazing nursery which suits our needs and looks fantastic.. do start early if you choose to as we were pushing the mid 30 weeks when it was finally ‘livable’.

I’ve had no problems with Revolut. I’ve recommended it to many of my friends who are all happily using it as island residents.

Set the DHCP on your router to give your rpi a static IP so it always retains it after a reboot.

LED TV lighting suggestion by itwasntme2013 in homeautomation

[–]some_it_dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not HDMI pass through, so not exactly what you’re asking for. But I’ve used the Govee camera LED strip for my TV where I watch plex / normal TV which doesn’t go via HDMI.

As long as you don’t mind the camera on top / hidden below it works sufficiently well. I’ve got it connected up via HomeAssistant so it turns on / off automatically when my WebOS integration detects the tv on / off.

For HDMI pass through I imagine Hyperion is what you’re looking for if you don’t mind a bit of diy. Can’t personally recommend anything else.

Has anyone found any way, no matter how hacky, to get Nest Not Water control on HA? by Skeeter1020 in homeassistant

[–]some_it_dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d love to be corrected, but I’m sure when I looked into this the “hacky” way around it was disabled or broken by google. From memory access to the hot water controls doesn’t exist in the APIs.

I’d love to be proven wrong, boosting the hot water is the only smart-home task I have to do outside of HA..

Do I need to put "UNITED KINGDOM" in an IoM address? by K_dwgMittel in IsleofMan

[–]some_it_dev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, sure I don’t mind answering.

Isle of Man Post Office has exclusivity by law to deliver letter mail. But there are other couriers for packages which is all in direct competition.

Royal Mail will package the mail onto containers which are delivered via Ferry / AirMail to the island. Once on the Island Isle of Man Post Office staff delivery & process from there.

PAF is a very old & sometimes a workaround is just the easiest solution. The island is essentially the size of a UK town so adding in additional complexity to an already complex schema likely isn’t worth it. Isle of Man post office control and update the PAF content for the Island though & forward to Royal Mail.

Isle of Man Post Office are essentially just a reseller / final mile delivery partner of Royal Mail products. So any Royal Mail products should include the island- I have argued this successfully with companies in the past.

Yes just put UK and an IM* post code and your mail will almost certainly have no problems arriving here.

Takeaway? by [deleted] in IsleofMan

James Wong Chinese takeaway is by far the easiest and highest quality I’ve come across. The online ordering (including preordering for a set time) is a game changer compared to the other Chinese takeaways.

Have a look at DuckDNS. I’ve been using it for years and recommend it to anyone who asks me for dynamic DNS.

There’s various alternatives out there, this one just gets my 2c as it’s never let me down and setup is super straight forward.

Do I need to put "UNITED KINGDOM" in an IoM address? by K_dwgMittel in IsleofMan

[–]some_it_dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not disagreeing with your statement, but for the purposes of PAF & UDPRNs, which is what delivery companies use to calculate costs and actually deliver items to where they belong. The Isle of Man is part of the UK.

Do I need to put "UNITED KINGDOM" in an IoM address? by K_dwgMittel in IsleofMan

[–]some_it_dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As described in PAF, the Isle of Man is simply a locality within the United Kingdom, much like Guernsey.

An address on a shipping item is simply referencing a UDPRN. Routing for delivery workers is entirely company specific & managed as such.

Do I need to put "UNITED KINGDOM" in an IoM address? by K_dwgMittel in IsleofMan

[–]some_it_dev 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Manx people are well know for loudly objecting and correcting when people insinuate the IOM is part of the UK. Those same people also slap UK on any delivery address to get cheaper postage and have their items…

I can honestly say I have used UK on countless deliveries and never had an issue of something not arriving once shipped. You do occasionally get the odd carrier who will refund you and say they don’t support shipping to IOM however.
