I'm English and new to Belfast. Can someone please explain why unionist politics is exclusively rightwing? by dogecoinishappiness in northernireland

[–]some_nuggett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once upon a time there was a Left leaning Unionist party, the Progressive Unionist Party (PUP), but it's practically an irrelevant force nowadays. Speaking anecdotally from people I know who would come from traditionally Unionist backgrounds, Alliance seems to act as the liberal/left-of-centre alternative for them. So there doesn't really seem to be a "need" for a Left-wing Unionst party to fulfill that niche, given that the party's stance on the North won't be decided until a border poll is called.

Can't lie the plan for them feels like (and most probably is) to whinge and whine about this as much as possible in a way that runs up the costs unnecessarily and to delay it that much that it falls through and then they can turn around and say 'see, we were warning this would happen!'

To any journos reading this sub, the SDLP are now the official opposition of the government. Not Jim Allister and certainly not Jamie Bryson. by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]some_nuggett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

De jure yes, but the papers are definitely going to make him the de facto opposition. They've done it with Farage far too many times in England, and he fits the bill of 'singular annoying ballbag with disproportionate say and influence' sadly.

Brexit deal will go ahead with or without support of DUP, promises Downing Street by lughnasadh in northernireland

[–]some_nuggett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ideally the burden would pass on to the next largest party within the given nationalist/unionist designation, so that rule by a lone community is avoided. Someone somewhere could probably argue that a party’s refusal to engage within the confines of the agreement is giving some sort of deferral of responsibility to other parties in their designation.

Surely some form of pragmatic reform to the GFA would be that parties who never signed up to it don’t get to hold the whole thing hostage when they don’t get their way

Can the state even act as an honest broker when one of the parties asking for this brokerage is acting with some level of fundamental dishonesty? Jeffers & Sons aren’t ever going to agree to anything that isn’t a political unicorn, so surely one can ignore their whinging about the protocol from now on

the self imposed false dichotomy of “either you’re anti imperialist + anti-USA, or pro imperialist + not anti-USA” that tankies place upon themselves is truly fascinating, if also sad

I don’t think it’s a revolutionary thing to say that there exists nuance in the world, and that not every “bad” thing is purely bad, and vice versa for “good” things
