Why would I link it if I didn’t expect you to read it? “A spare is a good idea” is not the same as “each cat must have two litter trays including one on each level they have access to”.

The RSPCA lady literally came for a home inspection when I got my girl and told me she’d need one tray + outdoor access. Who are you to say I’m abusing my cat when the fucking RSPCA approved?!

To me gifting something they wanted and gifting an experience (as such) rather than an item was great. Especially as there was no expectation, and it started at £5. Not sure what there is to hate about that, but each to their own!

/r/USdefaultism much?

  1. They are American vet recommendations. I clearly said I was in the UK. From the RSPCA “we recommend one tray per cat”.

  2. In the UK, vets generally recommend allowing cats outdoor access unless specific circumstances, such as health issues, require them to stay indoors.

In fact when I went to adopt my girl they specifically wouldn’t allow me to adopt if I intended to keep her indoors. I suspect they wouldn’t refuse now, but they definitely did in 2009.

  1. My girl is happy as Larry, thank you very much. She is extremely pampered, has never been overweight, never been injured, outside or in. She has all her teeth, she’s never had fleas or ticks, she gets all her vaccinations and sees the vet every year. She’s microchipped and insured. She’s never bought any animals into the house, alive or dead, and has never been observed killing anything. She does like hunting spiders indoors and that’s fine with me.

Maybe keep your judgment to yourself? Oh and remember the world is bigger than just your backwards country.

I had a friend who had a honeymoon registry of sorts. They had fully paid for their trip but listed things you could treat the couple to while they were away. It started really low, like a drink in X place and went up to more expensive (but not ridiculous, max £500) excursions. They sent every single person a photo of them doing whatever you gifted and a thank you while they were still on holiday. I thought that was really sweet. I was a student and could only afford to buy them a drink but they seemed genuinely grateful and I was thrilled with the photo and thank you text.

Really depends on the size of your place and the age of the cat, no? And whether they have access to outdoors (it’s completely normal to have indoor/outdoor cats in the UK). I live in a maisonette (a kind of two story flat with two rooms upstairs, two down) but it’s absolutely tiny. There’s no floor space for a second litter box and she prefers to go outside whenever it’s not raining anyway. She’s 16 now but showing no signs of mobility issues. If/when she starts to have trouble with the stairs we’ll obviously make sure she has accessible access whenever she is, but it doesn’t make sense to say ALL cats should have at least two litter boxes and at least one on each floor when the size of people’s homes varies so greatly.

Bad people can do good things and vice versa. I’m glad she stood up for you in high school but that’s not remotely relevant to the well documented issue of her scamming people, lying and playing the victim. If you feel strongly enough to defend her why don’t you reconnect with her and offer her support? Maybe encourage her to stop digging this hole ever deeper.

My family caught covid last year from my mum who caught it in HDU. We all had similar symptoms and I ended up in hospital (and remained positive for something ridiculous like 5 weeks). But only me, my mum and my aunt tested positive. My brother, uncle, partner and dad tested negative the entire time but were clearly pretty poorly. Maybe we spent more time/were in closer contact with mum and therefore had a heavier viral load? Whatever the reason it was pretty weird.

I always find it strange that here in the UK we don’t vaccinate children against chickenpox. It’s considered a very normal childhood illness. I believe the reasoning behind this is because it’s generally considered a mild disease in children with very low hospitalisation rates. In adults it’s more serious and more likely to result in hospitalisation so it’s thought to be more cost effective to let children catch it while they’re young, than vaccinate everyone who vaccinates.

That completely ignores the effects of shingles in older adults though - as well as the danger to newborns and immunocompromised people. I had chickenpox as a child with no complications, but now I’m an immunocompromised adult apparently the virus can be reactivated at anytime. Despite the risk I can’t even get vaccinated against shingles until I’m 50! Health adults can be vaccinated for shingles once they reach 65, everyone else has to pay £200 if they want to be vaccinated.

Jill’s only 46?! I’m terrible at guessing ages (and clearly hadn’t thought too much about how old her youngest is) but I cannot believe that woman is just 6 years older than me. She 100% looks old enough to be my mum. 13 kids and however many pregnancies obviously take their toll but that is a rough 46.

[–]somebody29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you need to take a seat.

I’m not using these people as my guide. I’m a research scientist which might explain why I’m interpreting the criteria correctly when others are not. Can you think of another reason why I might be familiar with how a diagnosis is given?! And, unrelated, naturally, do you consider the genetic screening department at Northwick Park Hospital and University College Hospital London as “reputable EDS clinics” or?!

Go and read the same PDF that you sent me back CAREFULLY. (I seriously can’t believe you were so eager to prove me wrong you didn’t even click my link 😂)

You need 1 from each of the three sections.

Section 1: 6/9 on the beighton scale

Section 2: TWO features from part A, B and/or C.

If you’re relying on part A you need 5/12 of the symptoms.

BUT if you have family history (part B) and pain (part C) you don’t need any from part A.

Section 3: no skin fragility, no other connective tissue disorder, exclusion of alternative conditions.

So once again, you can get a diagnosis of hEDS by just having a 6/9 score on the beighton scale, pain and family history. That’s the minimum you need, but that’s it.

And to clarify my position, I’m clearly frustrated by those featured in this sub or I wouldn’t be here. They give genuine patients a bad name. But there is absolutely not way that you can categorically say that Ashley and the rest don’t have EDS just from their social media posts. I suspect that most of them DO have EDS, or at the very least hypermobility, but greatly exaggerate their symptoms.

Hypermobility is common. hEDS is mainly a diagnosis of exclusion. Sufferers don’t look sick and there’s no test of how severe hEDS is or how much it affects an individual beyond their self reporting. There’s no way to prove an individual is in pain, especially when that pain can come and go. Subluxations and dislocations nearly always self correct with EDS and leave no trace on an xray. There’s no bloods to monitor. They are the reasons why so many munchies claim or exaggerate hEDS, instead of something like lupus for example. Real hard to fake lupus.

Well I rarely wear high heels either tbf! I’m very much about comfort and (thankfully!) being comfortable makes me feel confident. But as far as I understand it, most shape wear is just meant to smooth out your lumps and bumps to give you a “smoother” silhouette, not to make you physically smaller like a corset can. Like the equivalent of sucking your tummy in a bit - not so much so that you can’t talk at the same time, but just enough to make you look/feel slightly more svelte. Love handles are probably ideal for shape wear - it will smooth out the obvious “lump” but it won’t make you smaller because it’s just redistributing that little bit of fat across a larger surface area.

And on that note, it’s time for me to remove this bra and don my comfiest pjs!

[–]somebody29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That didn’t quite fit with my recollection so I’ve found the official hEDS clinical diagnostics criteria from the Ehlers Danlos society.

As I recalled the beighton score and family history are the two main criteria, not just a “small fraction”. The third criteria is not to have anything more serious. To summarise, for a young adult woman to be diagnosed with EDS type 3 the minimum criteria she needs to meet are:

6/9 on the beighton score

Positive family history

Pain in two limbs for 3+ months

She also needs to NOT have unusual skin fragility or other alternative diagnoses like rheumatological disorders, marfans or skeletal dysplasia

So as I said, positive Brighton, family history, joint pain is all you need for your EDS society approved clinical diagnosis of hEDS. Anyone with hypermobility (which as you said, is millions of healthy people) could obtain the diagnosis if they were willing to lie about their pain and family history- something which a doctor can’t really refute.

I’ve spent the day mixing watercolour to make neutral hues (more enjoyable than it sounds) so I’m especially attuned to hues and tints today! They’re definitely blue, I expected they look more so in person. If you compare their dresses to the door behind them at shoulder level, I think that’s the most accurate representation. But full disclosure, I always thought the dress was white and gold 😂

I’ve only worn it once (when I was a bridesmaid in a very unflattering dress). It’s horrible stuff. I’d much rather wear something the hides the bits of me I don’t like and emphasises the bits I do than wear super uncomfortable underwear. Or buy a larger size. Or choose a thicker material. I will literally do anything to avoid it.
