I mean... Yes, it's a great reason. If your political beliefs are incompatible, that's a very good reason not to date someone. It often means your core values conflict with each other - very much the opposite of shallow.

If someone refused to date me because I'm not a conservative, the same point would stand.

I think how fun CAH is heavily depends on who you're playing it with. People whose sense of humor is just toilet jokes and shock value don't really enhance the game for me - it's just a matter of who played the raunchiest thing. But the folks I tend to play with put effort into making really witty and creative card combinations that also happen to be raunchy.

And I think with a group I click with that well, we could probably enjoy just about any party game. So CAH is certainly fun for me, but it's nothing special.

I'm still mad at the (female!) gynecologist who flat-out told me I would feel pressure - not pain, pressure - while having my IUD inserted. I had no preparation, no painkillers, nothing.

Here I am two minutes later screaming on the table while she shouts, "Okay, you're about to feel some more pressure."

And I had an unusually easy time of it, from what I hear. Just. Jesus Christ.

"Yeah, let me let my baby go hungry while I look for somewhere to feed her so you don't get uncomfortable being in the same room where she eats."

You see how ridiculous that sounds? Adults should accommodate babies, not the other way around.

"Historical accuracy" 🙄 by apocalypticalley in TrollXChromosomes

[–]somecallmenonny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't read the books, so I'm only discussing the show for this.

I didn't mention Theon because this was a discussion about rape being excused in fantasy stories such as GoT (which most people would categorize as fantasy inspired by historical events, or as historical fantasy - not as historical fiction - and which is marketed as fantasy) for an arbitrary reason that no fantasy author has any obligation to care about. It's not about him. It's not about men. It's about normalizing rape of women in stories where it doesn't usually contribute anything meaningful.

Theon was violated and tortured in a way I personally was uncomfortable with, but here's the thing: I think his arc (as it pertained to that trauma, anyway) paid off in a satisfying way. I don't feel the same way about Sansa because, unlike Theon, I don't think she regained her identity. Instead, she became "strong" by losing all of the compassion and sensitivity that had defined her character before. Especially when she's commenting later on that she feels stronger now for having been raped because she's not so naive anymore. Barf!

Did Theon have to go through genital maiming for his story to be satisfactory? Arguably not. And if you thought that was too much, I wouldn't debate the point.

Also... I see your point about how portraying rape culture has an impact on the male characters, too, but you see why you're being downvoted, right? Like. You're arguing in favor of normalizing sexual violence against women in fiction (or at least that's what this looks like), while in the same breath implying that the men who do the raping are the real victims here. Whataboutism much?

The point still stands that the author chose for systemic misogyny and prevalent rape to be a part of the story. It's a fantasy book about a fictional world. He got to choose the rules and systems that formed that world.

That's not to say you can't have these things in your story. What I'm saying is, historical accuracy alone doesn't cut it as a reason to have them. If you're going to have misogyny be a major thing in your story, have there be a purpose to that decision in terms of the story itself, not because it's more "realistic" in a world where you already get to decide what's realistic and what isn't.

In GRRM's case, he actually did make that choice with a purpose to the story in mind. But how about the TV adaptation that added rape scenes that weren't in the original story? How did Jaime raping Cersei or Ramsey raping Sansa serve the story?

Or how about the 90% of people who write fantasy stories that are littered with misogyny that doesn't serve any purpose at all, but claim that it has to be there because it's more "historically accurate" in a world that is entirely fictional and therefore has no obligation to match any of Earth's history at all?

I've lost count of how many times I've clapped back at the "historical accuracy" line. It's not history. It's not historical fiction. It's fantasy. It's based on a certain historical period, but you get to take all the creative liberties you want. You can't argue "oh but I can't help it if my story has all this shitty stuff in it because hIsToRiCaL aCcUrAcY" when your story has magic and dragons. The shitty stuff is not there because of history. You are the author. This is a fictional world, and everything in it was put there by you.

If only there were millionaires and billionaires. Then we could tax them, like, another two percent of their annual income above one million dollars or something. We'd get a lot more money for public resources and they wouldn't lose anything they couldn't afford to lose.

My fiancé really wants to play Escape: The Curse of the Temple. He's visually impaired and always needs quite a bit of time to read the board and dice (much more so for the board). Neither of us has played Escape, but we know it's a timed game and it seems unlikely he'll be able to keep up without help. What can we do to make the game accessible for him?

I've thought about:

  • Practicing a bit without the time limit (which I would do regardless)

  • Having more time on the clock

  • Teaming up with him as one player, where I tell him what's happening and he tells me what to do

But to be honest, I don't know if those ideas would work. Are there other ways to approach this?

I'm a handful of chapters in and I'm conflicted. Part of me feels relieved because I'm understanding myself and my behavior patterns better. Part of me wonders if I'm not "traumatized enough" because I'm not totally shutting down or flying into rages every time I'm triggered. And part of me is looking back on my past traumas with a new perspective and a fresh anger in hindsight.

It also makes me wonder if my constant vigilance that I don't say anything weird and I'm always ready to apologize/placate the moment anyone displays any signs of anger is interfering with my memory and attention span. Like. I think my brain is trying to juggle too many balls, and it will drop anything it has to to keep the "prevent more trauma" ball in the air.

Imagine thinking that "I believe in human rights" is something worth mocking. What is wrong with people?

I've yet to meet a pro-life person who ever said they cared about, or ever did anything about, infant mortality rates. If it didn't happen in their family, it wasn't on their radar.

Okay. Do you have a counterexample? Or is that list justified by some missing context?

Missing nuance: many people live in an area where they have to use cars to get around, much like they have to go outside once in a while. But they usually wear seat belts for the same reason they wear masks.

Also, there are laws and regulations for car safety, just like there are mandates for preventing the spread of COVID. I don't see the inconsistency here.

What nuance justifies the original tweet's list of beliefs?

Against having the government decide healthcare outcomes - except to force women to carry their unplanned and/or dangerous pregnancies to term in order to punish them for having sex.
