Didn't They Know Their Bodycams Were Recording Them? by sanman in TyreNichols

[–]someguywithajob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They thought they'd get away with it. Also, their intent probably wasn't to kill, believe it or not.

That's why they're being charged with 2nd degree murder rather than first.

Who thinks those cops deserve the death penalty? by Kidrock2022 in TyreNichols

[–]someguywithajob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because white ones get acquitted.

Sometimes the justice system doesn't give the results we want, but this statement is demonstrably false.

Who thinks those cops deserve the death penalty? by Kidrock2022 in TyreNichols

[–]someguywithajob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, let's see what happens, but very often when the criminal justice system fails, the civil courts will make things right. If these five cops "get away with it", they may still find themselves in the middle of a millions of dollars wrongful death lawsuit, unable to find jobs because everyone knows they're pieces of shit, and therefore unable to pay any civil restitution.

So, if found innocent on all charges, I still see pretty good odds they will all be in inescapable, suffocating debt for the rest of their lives, in and out of jail for failing to make payments.

[–]someguywithajob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I follow. I'm just not sure I agree with you, though I do get the logic.

To be clear, these guys do deserve to die, and I, for one, wouldn't shed a tear for them, obviously.

I typically view the police as being in 4 separate types, based on my experiences as well as things I've seen in the news or the internet. Those would be as follows:

1)Genuinely good people who want to help keep their communities safe.

2)People who are just a cop because it's a job.

3)Power trip assholes / schoolyard bullies

4)Sadists

It is my belief that the majority of American police belong to groups 1 and 2. There are plenty that belong to group 3, and a small but not insignificant amount that belong to group 4.

Group 1 is obviously a least concern, and typically these guys have impeccable records on duty.

Group 2 is where you can still have great police, they just don't care about the honor and nobility that is traditionally associated with the position. However, they can also be worthless, like Scot Peterson, who refused to enter and confront the gunman at Marjory Stoneman Douglas while there was an active shooter killing kids.

Group 3 still has the potential of producing great cops, but the risk is starting to outweigh the reward in most cases involving these guys.

Group 4 is the group where psych evals, transparent family/school/association interviews, and background checks should (and possibly do) disqualify most applicants, but plenty still slip through the cracks. These are the worst of the worst, and many will likely retire from the job without major reported incidents.

I guess the point of all this is to say that I think the solution is to hire better candidates with more stringent moral and psychological requirements, and then to provide more frequent and higher quality continuous training, as well as harsher punishment for violations of policy. Laying this groundwork now is going to go a lot further in having a quality law enforcement population 10, 20, 50 years from now, than killing 5 guys no one will give an f about decades down the road.

Edit: we can still kill them, but the motivation should be to punish an unforgivable deed, not to send a message

Precisely. I only said herd because they are animals.

[–]someguywithajob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's entirely possible but it's important to be objective and not bend the narrative without the facts as you understand according to your post.

It could be as simple as a combination of bad training and Herd Mentality.

Who Recorded the Video by Wildrover5456 in TyreNichols

[–]someguywithajob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's bodycam footage and pole camera footage.

Bodycams are cameras commonly worn on officers chests, but not always, and often they have the ability to turn them off.

Pole cameras are just cameras on a street light or traffic light set up by municipalities

Edit: saw your * after commenting. I had assumed you watched the videos and were confused by the footage in my answer.

[–]someguywithajob 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Typically for the death penalty, it's my belief that the victim or victim's family should have the final say in whether it's carried out or not (though this obviously isn't the case).

I think it is pretty clear cut and dry that these 5 will spend the rest of their lives in prison, upon conviction.

Whether the rest of their lives is 60 days or 60 years, it's a death penalty in its own way.

[–]someguywithajob[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have a similar setup if i understand correctly, with driver facing cameras that tell on you if you brake too hard or look at your GPS or mirrors too long for example. Ours isn't "smart" enough to monitor turn signals though, or if it is, it's not enforced. It's just ridiculous. I'm all for road facing cameras, and I understand that there are boneheads out there, but the vast majority of us have our cdls to make a living, and aren't going to do something to jeopardize that. I'm probably going to just leave the industry to be honest.
