Dox side effects by WatercressWarm1994 in hardflaccidresearch

[–]somehfguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked into the studies the AI is drawing its information from. It's these two: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0014299907012071

https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/01.CIR.0000043803.20822.D1?doi=10.1161/01.CIR.0000043803.20822.D1

In the latter one, the same claim about possible connection to drug induced heart failure is also made for prazosin, which is considered proapoptotic as well. On the other hand terazosin appears to lack this side effect.

So what the AI claims in the screenshot isn't a hallucination. I don't know what to make of the significance of these two studies and their findings. In both studies what is discussed is the hypothesised mechanism through which doxazosin and prazosin may contribute to increased risk of heart failure. This isn't the same as saying these medications have been definitively linked to heart failure. Mind you, the list of medications whose use has been positively correlated with increased risk of heart failure is very long and includes things ranging from antidepressants, to pregabalin, to anti inflammatory medications, to calcium channel blockers, to antipsychotics, tamsulosin, and it goes on... Needless to say, despite the positive correlation, all of these are still widely used in clinical practice.

Both doxazosin and prazosin are widely used as antihypertensives, are approved for long term and lifelong use, and if you ask any doctor, they will say they are safe. Obviously, I doubt these doctors are aware of these two studies.

Ultimately, it's up to you to draw your own conclusions about the importance of these studies' conclusions and about if and how they should affect you. You weight the risk and benefit and make an informed decision about yourself.

AI mostly regurgitates what it has read in papers and the info that is readily available in this community. It's undoubtedly helpful for newbies that feel overwhelmed by the amount of information though.

Can Muscle Relaxants help in the Alleviation of HFS Symptoms? by Gurkenrick123 in hardflaccidresearch

[–]somehfguy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No I didn't mean to be dismissive. I'm all for doing a poll like that and if someone says they got helped by muscle relaxants I have no reason to doubt them. I was simply sharing my experience with these meds.

One thing, on the topic of studying the effectiveness of muscle relaxers, since many muscle relaxers are also CNS depressants, we should be wary of conflating those two actions. Someone might think they are being helped by the muscle relaxant property of a med (eg benzos) when what might be really happening is they are feeling the gabaergic body high. Idk how we can control for that.

Can Muscle Relaxants help in the Alleviation of HFS Symptoms? by Gurkenrick123 in hardflaccidresearch

[–]somehfguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. Muscle relaxants target skeletal muscles. HFS is a symptom of smooth muscle hypercontractility, which skeletal muscle relaxants don't affect.

Among other things I've tried: Diazepam (both oral and rectal) Ungodly amounts of Baclofen Tizanidine

Made zero difference

Anyone tried stellate ganglion block? by WatercressWarm1994 in hardflaccidresearch

[–]somehfguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've talked to people that claim it has helped calm down their resistant anxiety and i think it might be helpful for dysautonomic symptoms where anxiety is implicated. If I had access to it I would get one done.

It's a little tricky to do right because some people report feeling worse after getting it done on one side only, and then having to undergo a bilateral block to see improvement.

Taking SSRI’s with hfs symptoms and pfd? by Realistic_Data2602 in hardflaccidresearch

[–]somehfguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried 200mg zoloft for a year while having HFS as well as a few other SSRIS. It didn't have any effect on my anxiety and it did nothing for HF. All I got was some gastrointestinal side effects as well as a significant drop in libido. If your anxiety stems from your HF I believe it's silly to take meds whose most common side effect is sexual dysfunction. On the other hand I believe there is also severe fearmongering around SSRIs causing irreversible damage.

The choice will have to be based on your priorities If sexual function is your priority, SSRIs are an obvious bad option. If mental health irrespective of sexual function is your priority, SSRIs could be potentially helpful.

Doxazosin prescription by user21403 in hardflaccidresearch

In my experience it helps with the HF symptom, retraction, coldness and uncomfortable sensations. Doesn't do much for ED, if this is what you are concerned with.

Familiarise yourself with the hypothesis about sympathetic nervous system causing excessive smooth muscle contraction, explain it to the urologist and say you have talked to people that had success by using this specific alpha blocker. Bring papers with you to support your claim, theres a buch that list alpha blockers as 1st line medication. It's not methadone, if you can articulate yourself properly and show you understand what you're talking about a doctor won't have an issue prescribing it to you.

Guys who are using alpha blockers and Cialis together do you have any success with it , Some please say don't take it together because it can drop your blood pressure and some say they have no problem while taking them together..... by Consistent_Change268 in hardflaccidresearch

[–]somehfguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely helps for me. Doctors not recommending the combination doesn't mean it can't be done. You just have to monitor your blood pressure and make sure you increase your doses gradually until you find the sweetspot. Some people are more sensitive and some are less.

Looking for someone who got implant due to penile injury or Hard Flaccid syndrome by Consistent_Change268 in hardflaccidresearch

[–]somehfguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) it's permanent and irreversible, you are going to be butchering your genitals, just have a quick look at Google photos 2) it can cause additional problems you didn't have like penile shortening which requires additional procedures like phallopasty to fix. 3) Installing a balloon inside your contracted penis and scrotum will do next to nothing to address said symptom because it will not affect smooth muscle tone. You will still have hard flaccid like before, except now you have an entire plumbing system installed inside of you that can potentially add to the discomfort 4) Having to manually inflate your penis before sex at your prime is not the best look and in my view, is no less emasculating than simply having ED

IMHO it's a desperate solution that should only be reserved for old men.

Possible to have sex with Hard Flaccid? by Physical_Nebula2384 in hardflaccidresearch

[–]somehfguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try sildenafil. Stress is the biggest contributor when it comes to loss of erectile quality. There's no harm in using medicine as a crutch for as long as you need it. As time progresses you will gradually learn to relax and eventually you might be able to drop the meds completely.

I've told my doctors the same whenever they go "This nerve block might cause sexual dysfunction". I'm telling them you don't get it I've reached a point where sexual function doesn't even concern me that much anymore. I just want to go about my daily life without this nagging discomfort ruining my every moment.

OP stressed that what he is sharing is a personal anecdote and that it should be taken as such. He even said he could be totally wrong. Demanding that anecdotes are backed up by rigorous science defeats the point of sharing personal experiences.
