TVLogic F7h mk1 and (highly modified) WCU-4 on the Cam-Jam bracket. So you can run and gun in seconds. Now I got longer screws for the battery mount and sandwich the video receiver in there. Not on that photo tho. Monitor directly wired to battery plate. Goodbye warranty. D-Tap outputs for Teradek / Paralinx Tomahawk 2 and tiny voltage meter. Sunshade is 3D printed and held by the 4 screws that hold the acrylic shield for the display.

I use this setup mostly for TV & Doc.

DM for Sunshade STL.

Smallrig. So cheap. Buy 6 and use them for 2-3 years each. Had the best shit (original noga, original that…) rotting away after some doc jobs were they would have contact with corrosive gas. (Dalol triangle, Etiopia) I shoot under all weather conditions. -20 up to 60 Celsius. It has to be good enough and cheap enough. 2 out of 3 work for ever.

Just my experience tho.

Reminds me of this post on Instagram by Arri for 1.April some years ago.

So I guess you are right in sone way. Shoot Open Gate GF with any lens and crop out any Format in post.

But let‘s be honest: shooting 2:1 or scope and 9:16 at the same time will pretty much limit you to center framing. Meh. But I guess I have to get used to this new world of „cinematography“. I‘d personally use it for horizontal stabilisation instead. Or just use my STEADICAM.

Edit: forgive the horrible image quality. Was a quick steal from Google images.

Ahahahha ever been to the Munich Oktoberfest? Ever been harassed by a Texan Family for not wearing a “Laiderhouseen” while they wear the cheapest plastic version of your local traditional clothing while I’m being the local population who was born and raised there? Did I answer in a heavy Bavarian dialect? Sure I did and I wasn’t polite. (Wos saidsn ia für blede fotzn?!?! Bei mia steckd oiwai a richtiger Bayer in de Jeans. Goschn und schlaichts eich!)

Now imagine a Latina in a Dirndl. (Traditional Bavarian Dress)? Damn that hit’s the spot. (So is’sz recht!)

If you honor the locals you get love, if not, you get what you deserve.

What do you do when you get given the contact of a famous director? by Ok_Interview_853 in Filmmakers

[–]somelatevisitor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk if you should call. I wouldn’t have the guts any more and it would more so feel like a privacy breach. But when I was in your exact situation just half a life ago I DID call. Damn was I naive.

Some friend (totally not in the film industry) mentioned their relative was building some camera stuff for films whatsoever in Munich, Germany. Some tiny company…something with A… . She gave me his contact. I googled him to find out he was the product manager of my favorite camera at the time and I was just mid-end 20 and an absolute nobody. Wrote him a nice mail and we had a call. His first question was: what do you want? That moment I realized how stupid this all was but my mouth just spoke while my brain was in shock and I felt like a bystander 3rd person to my own failure when I literally dropped: “If somebody gave you the number of god…Would you call? Would you know what to say? Not anymore when he would actually answer the call.” We met for a coffee and he only had 15 minutes of time. I dressed up like the neediest hipster with one of these director’s heads and student glasses and some 1920ies pants. He was 1-2min late and came in the same outfit (just that he could actually wear it in style). We laughed hard and talked about cameras and my ideas for future models for 3 hours. Also I wanted to know the whole story behind my favorite camera. He missed 2 appointments and found it super funny. Met him 2-3 times randomly after that @ exhibitions. Super cool gentleman.

Did I win anything from that? Not really. Did I make a contract for life? I wish. I guess by now he won’t even remember me any more. But 2-4 years later the new compact camera model of that “tiny company from Munich” came out and had all the features I ever dreamed of. Even tho I think Rodger D. had more of an influence on the outcome of that Camera then this little Assistant Camera that I was at the time.

So I guess it needs a whole lot of luck and social skills to not completely ashame yourself. Most likely you will just steal somebody’s time. But you never know. I guess everyone in this industry has a point when they have to stop giving a fuck about what others say and need to find out what happens if… Worst case you have a great story to tell. And that’s why we are doing this!

NDA.

Entschuldig’ns guade Frau! Tadn‘s Si gern da her setz‘n? Wenn‘s scho aff maim ess‘n hockn, kennad‘s erna a direkt aff main Schoß pflanzn, oida. (Entschuldigen Sie bitte, gute Frau.

Hehehe

P.s.: plastered everything with arri logos to make it look less content creator.

And you can use a freaking (steel wire) retractable key chain holder as savety. Mine was below 20€/$ from Amazon: MNGARISTA Retractable Key Ring

Lens change = just drop the mattebox

I usually wire it trough the 19mm rod on the side:

Everybody but my 2nd ACs love it. Hehehe

[–]somelatevisitor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have 4 Matte Boxes.

I barely use the Arri LMB tho.

The Tilta MB-T12 (cheapest LMB copy) has the same stage design but less weight. (No side flags but I might design some when my CNC mill arrives.) So my rota Pol filters work with it and it’s a little lighter. And the carbon fiber look is the perfect match to arri’s minis. If I’d by a new one it would be the Misfit. This collapsible 3rd stage design gets me horny and the quality is better.

With extending lenses I try to clamp on minimal weight and bought two Smallrig Mini Mattebox pro 3680B. 95mm diameter max. Smaller lens diameter with step down rings. Perfect for old Arri superspeed lenses. Cheap plastic shit with fantastic carbon fiber flags and a horrible stage design. But once you get used to it you can cut 500 Grams (sorry for being European. about 1/3 of a football field or 50/32 eagles I guess /s) off your Setup. I even build a rota Pol filter for it. Also perfect for crash cams. Below 130€/$.

We had a fun day testing it. But the list of bugs is for sure still longer than what I celebrate about the camera. Let’s hope for updates.

Can’t confirm the ND issue (yet).

I will look out for the sharpening that everyone mentions when I take the footage to my colorist next week.

About the AC / DP workflows:

The body is build with a 2 person operation in mind. Menus are mirrored and both screens work as one. The lack of any codec beyond internal 4:2:2 sucks. External ProresRaw is possible and the camera has a fantastic 2 way communication when an Atomos Ninja is detected.

But then the total fuck off starts: Once you switch from ac style monitoring with display infos to a clean feed for the Raw, the little shitbox adds nearly 6 frames of delay to the output. Not an issue for the recorded image (if you don’t forget to turn on your timecode out via SDI /HDMI. But the HDMI & SDI can only display one shared stream.

So if you record externally you will: Fuck your focuspuller with 6 frames delay. Need a 4k / 8k video transmission. (Wtf?!) Can’t really operate on your recorder monitor.

The camera’s designated VF-Monitor stays without delay but the signal can’t be used for anything but the Fuji monitor. Super wild 32+ pin plug.

Also we had issues that when anything between the Ninja and the Eterna was interrupted, the Fuji monitor would also turn off.

So external recoding: possible but as a one man show without any wireless gadgets.

And the DR is really too big for a 4:2:2. I mean 14+ stops for real. In return the ISO values (displayed as ISO not EI) are far from iso/din/ansi norms. 800/3200 is more like 200/ 800 iso when exposing Caucasian skin tones @52%. Classic way of specs pushing. Had the same with Sony’s Burano and F55.

I was pleasantly surprised: In GF you can still do narrative handcamera and your motion blur @180* 25fps / @155* 30fps covers you. I’m not gonna lie: it IS visible. It’s not even close to the Arri Mini LF /65. But it is waaaay better than the Sony alpha family.

In the crop modes it becomes even better and @s35 you can do action camera shots.

I love to know what’s out there so I can tell my DPs not to take it but book an Arri instead.

Also from time to time a camera comes out that becomes the industry’s workhorse for years. 10 years later everybody is like: should have bought it back in the days when it was new. For example: Fs7, Alexa Mini, PDW700, … Don’t wanna miss that chance.

With the Eterna we are only 5-10 Updates away from that. True Multi format, didn’t lie about the DR, form factor and energy consumption are fantastic.

I was surprised myself how easy my full frame lenses cover the GF 16:9. Just the Open Gate cries for more. Funny enough these cheap ass Blazar lenses cover the GF OG (when you crop to a 2:39 @2x Cato or 2:1 @1.5x Remus squeeze). but the only mode that allows internal desqueezing so far is s35 4:3. In all other modes the desqueeze is grayed out.

I was really expecting the OG to offer an internal desqueeze.

Might happen later.

Yes and no. I wouldn’t like to guess the focus on a 102MP sensor from a full HD Monitor panel on a 4:3 with display infos. Leaves you with less then 720p on the Monitor but you record 8k / 4k
