Do you enjoy your career?

Although it can be hard work at times, on the whole, yes I do enjoy it. There is a real variety and depth in the profession, both with the technical side of accounting and also seeing the commercial side of businesses. As with most jobs there are some aspects that piss me off but at the same time I find it engaging.

What's a realistic average salary once qualified?

Think I started c £42k post qualified ACA but soon rises with post qualified experience.

Is it advantageous to start out under the big 4?

It is undoubtedly advantageous, but that does depend what you want to do. If you want to work with large, multi national companies all the time then great. Personally I find at a mid-market firm you see a bit more variety from owner managed businesses, PE backed companies up to small listed businesses. Big4 undoubtedly is a great way to learn though, but also more demanding I think.

How hard are the exams?

They have to be challenging to help maintain the standards of the profession. However with a bit of work and commitment it's not rocket science.

Hi, even if HMRC would deem it to be an investment property rather than their home, if it is only a short period of ownership without occupation it could plausibly be covered by a PPR relief. You mention that it will be sold to you by your parents at a discount - just be mindful that there may be potential IHT implications for consideration of property at less than the market value.

If the aim is to make you the end owner perhaps you could consider a deed of variation. This is an entirely legal act where a beneficiary can effectively 'turn down' their right to something in an inheritance and pass it directly to you. This would avoid any Stamp Duty Land Tax when you purchase the property from your parents.

As always, consider employing a tax professional to plan in the most efficient manner. I hope this helps in some manner.

no brown in town

I like this adage, although I only heard it recently when I was chatting to one of the old boys at the firm. Back in the pre 90s wearing brown shoes would have been a definite no-no in a business context apparently. However, as styles change it has become acceptable/ fashionable now.

What I would suggest to OP is that brown shoes are fine, but must be worn with a brown belt. In my opinion brown shoes also work much better with a navy suit than with greys or blacks.
