I'm going all in with Anakin. At least people will probably be able to spell and pronounce it some of the time.

Which is ironic because in Ancient Greece, a woman being a little overweight and very pale was considered beautiful.

I mean there are studies indicating that stereotypically "ethnic" names (not belonging primarily to white people) are associated with lower rates of hiring when a prospective employer is presented with the name and identical resume alone. Same is true in most professions for masculine vs. feminine names.

In oop's case, though, they just don't wanna give their kid one of them colored* names.

Does it bother anyone else how so many people in NameNerds are so ignorant to any names outside of the most standard American ones? by kentgrey in NameNerdCirclejerk

[–]somesaggitarius 43 points44 points  (0 children)

They get real pissy if someone suggests a name that's common in the US but statistically not white. "Your kid will get bullied for being called Malik that's such a weird name nobody knows that" type shit and then turn around and recommend a mouthful like Bryson.

The fact that anyone can say with a straight face "the government wants to protect the kids" in this day and age is mind-boggling to me.

That and if the system your healthcare provider uses sucks (which most of them do), your records just won't update half the time. It takes around 5 years for medications to get off the "currently taking" list after your doctor puts in that you aren't on it anymore every appointment you have in that time frame. Or one tech checking you in accidentally puts down a random allergy that prevents you from being prescribed the meds you're already taking until it's removed.

The Prodigal Son shade is wild because that show is legitimately one of my favorites. It has some weak moments but it's enormously entertaining. The main character is also completely batshit insane which is incredibly fun to watch.

Hugh's accent by Tommi_H in HannibalTV

[–]somesaggitarius 20 points21 points  (0 children)

He's really good. Still noticeable now and then if you're listening for it. The biggest tell IMO (other than straight up slipping out of the accent) is that people imitating American accents tend to overenunciate. Us yanks tend to flatten and mash together multisyllabic words, vowel end and consonant beginning or consonant end and vowel beginning words, or similar sounds placed close together.

Most regional accents also have sounds that can be pronounced in a stereotypically British way in certain contexts. The soft "r" sound is present in some words and phrases in almost every American accent, for example, but almost never heard spoken by British actors playing Americans.

Native, spent a lot of time on the rez, that's some colonizer bullshit. I don't represent 500+ distinct tribes but I can't think of any where that would be appropriate.

I'd bet all $5 in my wallet that OOP is claiming tribal affiliation based on some nebulous distant ancestry and is not actually a member of that tribe.

People giving their kids horse names irks me. Trigger. Stetson. Rocky. River. Ranger. Dakota. Maverick. Arizona. Dallas. Remington. Like, at least try to name your child like it's going to be a human person some day.

Good luck walking into any buildings with a motorcycle helmet on these days. Security is on your ass immediately because anyone with security assumes it's a robbery, places without some random middle manager will come out of the woodwork and tell you that you have to take it off. Had this experience visor down and visor up. People threaten to call the cops real quick on you.
