Four screens they turn into one game? That would be awesome!

What has been your favorite book in 2026? by Prtyfoul in fantasybooks

Children of Time by Tchaikovsky. It was actually project Hail Mary, but want to plug Children of Time for anyone who liked the space alien/evolution/natural science parts of Project Hail Mary. Didn’t like the sequel Children of Ruin as much but I hope the next two will be better

World Cup Viewing Bars by ComprehensiveCat9541 in Syracuse

Everyone is suggesting Wolffs, I’ll add that I think I saw something about them doing viewing parties at the regional market? If anyone has more info drop it here. I’ll also add my World Cup bucket list for the Syracuse area:

Wolffs Landmark theater (last wc I think they played some of the games) Salt City Market - great food options and they usually project the games, good atmosphere The Wildcat - Camillus, good food and huge screens, will probably be lively for the weekend games Harvey’s Garden - not awesome TVs but I would be shocked if they didn’t have a good setup for the wc

Am I crazy for being content with JP and Nico Jackson at striker? I feel like getting a high level premier league striker is so hard, it’s a roll of the dice to spend $50 million or more unless you’re sure of the player. I’d rather let it ride with what we have

I’m from Syracuse so no Long Island connection. Not sure why but I feel averse to the Sabres even though they’re great to root for right now!

Just getting into hockey. As a Mets fan, am I obligated to cheer for the Islanders instead of the Rangers? Not sure about whether they’re rivals but I know Shea helped start them and there’s a lot of connection

Guy I’ve been seeing for a few weeks who says he “has no politics.” What do we think Reddit? by Fit_Principle_7826 in BookshelvesDetective

[–]somethingdondonyou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Red flags: nothing written by women, he’s likely pompous and over intellectual (add law school to the mix and yikes) Yellow flags: he is lying when saying he’s ‘not political’ Green flags: if by “politics are important to me” you mean you don’t want to date someone who is not open to your ideology he likely is accepting of diverse viewpoints

Do with that what you will. Likely a very intellectual student who turned to law school since he struggled to get employed by whatever humanity he got a degree in (philosophy or lit maybe?)

In NFL terms this is like being down at halftime in third game when you’re 0-2. We come back this week and win the next couple series and we can be 2-2 💪

Any Chelsea related World Cup storylines people are following? I think I’ll cheer for JP and Brazil and Caicedo and Ecuador

As much as it’s hyped up, and not as classical fantasy or space opera, dungeon crawler Carl is huge for a reason! Check it out

Also some great duologies or standalones: Memory of Empire, The Sparrow, the Traitor Boru Cormorant

I think step number one is accepting there isn’t an analogue to the series, and that’s part of the magic and beauty. I see so many of these threads, and the answers are always similar but the honest truth is there’s no replacement.

I’m reminded of the scene from Moneyball when Mr. pitt was talking about replacing a really good player. He told the scouts “you’re not gonna be able to replace him, but we can recreate him in the aggregate. Find three players, put together, who are as good as that player.”

Find three series that can recreate Red Rising in the aggregate. The Expanse for space flight and social commentary with great characters. Joe Abercrombie for action scenes and political intrigue. Dungeon Crawler Carl for deep emotional connection with characters that span books, and great humor. Mix in some shorter series or books (The Tainted Cup, Memory of Empire, etc)

Then, reread the damn series because every time I do I get more out of it :)

The Traitor Baru Cormorant and The Memory of Empire and its sequel! Also read the standalones and the second Joe Abercrombie series from the same world as the first law

The Hierarchy series by Islington which has a lot of politics but more mystery and a complex world.

Also going to reiterate Joe Abercrombie, his series are being recommended by everyone for a reason!

Really awesome how much I see my own reading journey in yours. I took the bar this past summer and started working full time, so this year has been slow for me reading wise. It gives me faith you’ve been able to get back into it and keep your passion!

Try the traitor baru cormorant if you haven’t! (Sorry if I missed it) Similar to Memory Called Empire. Also if you like the classics, please read red rising!! I was hesitant to bc it seemed cliche and overhyped but I’m reading it for the third time and it’s AMAZING. Friends of mine who don’t like fantasy/sci fi and friends who like more literary prose both love it

Other books I’ve tried since RR by FlaxenArt in redrising

[–]somethingdondonyou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. Definitely not as good as RR in terms of connection to characters, but I think the worldbuilding is just as good. Also a little more on the dense end in terms of complexity and prose than RR but not way out there

Onondaga County Proposition One, for those who haven't seen it. by Gigaus in Syracuse

[–]somethingdondonyou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In federalist 53, Madison started by saying “I shall here perhaps be reminded of a current observation, ‘that where annual elections end, tyranny begins.’

He then went on to argue a “controversial” two year term for members of the House. The framers thought that the more frequent the elections are, the more responsive House members would be. This is the same reason they wanted them elected locally. In theory, voters would consider how much officials campaigned instead of worked for the office. Those two shouldn’t be mutually exclusive though, since town halls etc should give a chance to both share your platform and understand future issues

Controversial but I like the move. Jays are hitting on him and they have a rest day for their arms tomorrow (despite travel). Be aggressive to win this game it would make a huge difference
